Decoding VIN Numbers For A Scion

Decoding VIN numbers for a Scion automobile can be a bit of a puzzle. While the VIN number system was introduced in 1981 as a way for people to be able to decode basic information about a vehicle, it has become more difficult over time because cars themselves have more and more options, makes and models.

VehicleHistory.com has an automated system where you can enter the VIN number of a Scion and have us decode it for you and send you its history. We also offer a decoding guide for free if you provide us with your email address, but we warn you that will be a good deal more work than you may expect!

That said, it is possible for you to have a good idea if the VIN number a seller has given you may belong to a Scion, Here is how to do it.

  • Step One: Look at the first three letters.
  • Step Two: They may read “JTK.” If not, move onto...
  • Step Three: Look at the second letter.
  • Step Four: It should read “T” or “N.”

If it does not, there is a chance it is not a VIN for a Scion and you should do a full vehicle history search.

History Of Scion

Coming in at number 29 in the top 30 sellers in the United States, Scion is by far the newest company on the list – and may not even be on the radar of many auto buyers.

In 2002, Toyota decided they wanted to create a new type of car that would appeal to the young “hipster” marketplace. They called this process “Project Genesis.”

The result was the Scion – because they thought the Toyota name would remind Generation Y of their parents' cars. For the Scion, Toyota has abandoned traditional marketing campaigns and instead relied on viral and guerrilla marketing – much of it centered on the concept that your parents will have no idea at all what type of car it is.

Scion has seen some success, but it is still unclear if the concept will take a strong foothold in the US market in the long term.

Used Scions

Used Scions are generally one of the least expensive used cars in the marketplace. But even at a low cost, you don't want to end up with a lemon. Before you decided on a particular Scion, we suggest that you enter the VIN number into VehicleHistory.com and make sure there are no known problems with it.
