More about the 2012 Dodge Journey SXT

The SXT is one of five trims available on the 2012 Dodge Journey. Specifically, the SXT is situated directly in the middle in terms of luxury and features. Perhaps the most notable feature that sets the SXT apart from lower trim levels is its 3.6L V6 engine.

Aside from its more powerful engine, the 2012 Journey SXT also boasts some indulgent features that include standard roof rails, larger 17-inch alloy wheels (compared to the 16-inch steel wheels that are standard on lower trims), and a convenient cargo cover.

Other standard equipment on every 2012 Journey SXT includes dual-zone climate control to keep everybody comfortable, a robust six-speaker sound system, and a sleek touchscreen interface.

Common Problems With the 2012 Dodge Journey SXT

Backup Alert System Chime Issues

In this complaint filed in August of 2012, the owner of a 2012 Dodge Journey SXT stated that the vehicle was in reverse when the built-in backing system alerted that there was another vehicle approaching.

The driver noted that the alert chime that sounds when another vehicle is detected was barely loud enough to be audible. This issue reportedly occurred on three separate occasions.

The owner reported that the alert tone had to be repaired at a private mechanic because it was not covered under warranty, even though the vehicle had just 3,600 miles on it.

Premature Tire Cord Separation and Rotor Issues

The owner of this 2012 Dodge Journey SXT reported in May of 2017 that the vehicle suffered from tire cord separation with just under 14,000 miles on the odometer. The owner reports that the OEM tires were replaced with “American-made” tires at his or her own expense.

However, the owner believes that the original tires installed on the vehicle caused warping of the brake rotors because he or she began noticing a pulsing sensation while braking.

Fuse Box/Electrical Problems

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11253158

In this NHTSA complaint, which was filed in September of 2019, the owner of a 2012 Journey SXT reports problems with the vehicle’s electrical system and fuse box. Specifically, the complaint states that the vehicle sometimes won’t start and that there are “sounds of electrical pops” coming from the fuse box.

The owner has taken the vehicle to a dealer, where he or she was told that the vehicle needs a new fuse box. However, the repair has not yet been made.

Heating and Cooling Problems

Vehicle History Review by Vincent Torres

In a Vehicle History review posted by Vincent Torres in March of 2020, this 2012 Dodge Journey SXT owner reports that he purchased the vehicle used in 2013 and began having problems with its heating and cooling in 2015.

The owner claims he has been to the shop more than 15 times with the same issues, but the vehicle still does not have working heat.

Window Wiring Issues

Vehicle History Reviews

In several Vehicle History reviews on the 2012 Dodge Journey SXT, owners have complained about the power windows malfunctioning. One review by Cyndy A. reports that the window motor went out, whereas a similar review by R.M. states that the driver’s window has had issues with its wiring.

However, this reporter claims that the issue was able to be fixed by soldering the wires.

Yet another review by Rochell M. mentions an issue with the driver’s side door wiring harness on her vehicle. Specifically, she reports that opening and closing the door prevents the windows and other accessories from functioning properly.
