How safe is the 2020 Nissan Rogue

The 2020 Nissan Rogue received a 4-star safety rating from the NHTSA and a rating of “Good” by the IIHS. Combine that with 4.58-star owner and 4.4/5 expert review ratings from Vehicle History and you can see why this SUV is so popular.

Although they’re important, crash test ratings do not determine the overall safety of the 2020 Rogue. If you want to learn about all the things in play, simply stick around and read this informative guide.

Nissan Rogue Crash Test Rating

As with prior years, the Nissan Rogue completed its crash tests for 2020 with the two major testing companies. Both the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) verified that this vehicle could stand up to serious forces in a collision. Here’s what their reports revealed.

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

Since it was one of the 2019 Top Safety Picks by the IIHS, it comes as no surprise that the 2020 Nissan Rogue performed rather well on their crash tests. Overall, it earned a “Good” score with high marks across the crashworthiness section.

The only exception is the passenger-side small overlap front test, which got an “Acceptable” score. The LED headlamps got an “Acceptable” rating as well, but the halogen reflectors performed poorly.

In regard to front crash prevention, the vehicle-to-vehicle system got a “Superior,” while the vehicle-to-pedestrian side was only “Advanced.” Ease of use for the LATCH system was given an “Advanced” as well.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

The 2020 Rogue was rated at four stars overall for the NHTSA crash tests. The frontal test rating was given three stars for the driver’s side and four for the passenger side.

The side crash tests earned five stars across the board except for the side pole star rating, which got a four. The rollover tests got four stars as well and revealed a low 16.4% rollover risk.

As you browse these ratings, it becomes quite clear that the Rogue can easily protect its occupants in a collision. Crash prevention is key as well, however, and that’s where its safety tech comes into the picture.

Available Safety Tech on the Nissan Rogue

Nissan created their Safety Shield 360 suite to help drivers avoid collisions and stay safe on the road. Although it will be standard across all Rogue trim levels in 2021, it was optional on most for 2020.

If you added this suite to your build, it came with:

High Beam Assist

When driving at night, it can be difficult to know just when it’s safe to use your high beams. Thankfully, High Beam Assist has your back. This feature automatically turns these important lights off as oncoming traffic approaches and back on again when it’s safe to do so.

Automatic Emergency Braking

Using high-tech camera equipment, the Automatic Emergency Braking system watches for both vehicles and pedestrians in your path. Upon noticing an obstruction, it activates the brakes in an attempt to prevent an accident. Although it may not always fully prevent the collision, applying the brakes can make the impact much less severe.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert

When backing up, the Rear Cross Traffic Alert system takes over the monitoring job and watches for obstructions in your path. If it sees something you don’t, it will chime to let you know to watch out.

Rear Automatic Braking

If you do not respond to the chime from the cross-traffic monitoring system, the Rear Automatic Braking steps in to prevent an accident. Without skidding out, it steadily applies the brakes in an attempt to stop the vehicle before reaching the obstruction.

Blind Spot Warning

If cars are traveling in your blind spot, it may be hard to see them even after looking over your shoulder. The Blind Spot Warning system helps resolve that problem by watching for nearby vehicles as well.

As you go to change lanes, the system will alert you to the presence of a vehicle in your blind spot with a quick chime. That way, you can wait for a safer moment to get into the other lane and avoid getting into an accident.

Lane Departure Warning

With Lane Departure Warning on tap, your car will always let you know if you’re starting to drift out of your lane. The system works by watching the markings on the road and making sure you stay in between them. If your tires start to cross those markings, the system will chime to let you know.

With these high-tech systems at your beck and call, you can avoid obstacles that appear in your path without breaking a sweat. Your risk of getting into an accident decreases dramatically as these systems assist on all your drives.
