The 2001 Toyota 4Runner does have a cabin air filter and it can be found behind the glove compartment. It is located behind a panel that is behind the dash and You will need to remove the glove compartment to access it. The filter that comes standard in Your vehicle is made out of paper and You can replace it with a similar quality one for around $10. If You want to filter out more airborne pollutants then You may want to upgrade to a carbon, or HEPA filter that can clean the air better. You should check Your filter every 6 months to make sure it is in good condition and free from debris or mold and change as needed.

Cabin filters didn’t appear until 4th generation which is 2002 and newer. A 2001 is a 3rd generation 4Runner and has no cabin filter.
