The 2016 Ford Explorer key fob battery type is CR2032. If You happen to notice that Your key fob is not working to unlock or start Your car it is a sign that the battery will need to be replaced. Your key fob has a transponder in it that communicates with the receiver in Your vehicle. When the battery is dead then there is no way to transmit the signal from the transponder to the receiver. If Your vehicle still will not unlock or start after You change the battery then that is a sign that there may be a problem with the body control module or alarm. You may need to reset the system to get it working again.

Actual battery inside my two 2016 FOBS is a CR2025. The CR3032 is .1ml thicker (and higher capacity) which probably won't fit since the two CR2025 batteries were hard enough to place inside the FOB and close. I measured the batteries after the "dashboard message" said "your FOB battery is low" and it was only at 2.8V. That means the total of the two batteries was 5.6 volts without a load. I don't know what the transmission load current is, but it seemed a little premature to be replacing the batteries - although they are 4 years old. Not a problem. $8.97 plus tax for a two-pack of CR2025 batteries, (what a ripoff at CVS Drug Store) I am back in business for another 4 years.

CR2032 for the fob with the flip-out key entry key. You need two CR2025 for the Intelligent KeyFob, which has no flip-out key. Both types are described, with battery replacement instructions, in the user manual.

The Explorers use different batteries depending on the style FOB that you are using. I have a 2016 Limited with a longer, rounded FOB that has 5 buttons and silver trim. This FOB uses two (2) 2025 batteies.

Owners manual says CR 2032 but after purchasing those & opening remote, there were CR 2025 batteries inside.CR 2025 is smaller. Owner’s manual also shows different remote in diagram. My remote came with my 2016 Explorer which was purchased new.
