Automatic Transmission Gear Failure

NHTSA Recall ID: 04V176000

This recall, which affects more than 1-million Honda vehicles, is specific to models equipped with an automatic transmission. On these models, heat buildup between the transmission’s countershaft and secondary shaft gears can lead to premature wear and tear and (in some cases) total gear failure.

Ignoring this recall could result in complete gear breakage or failure. If this occurs while driving, the vehicle’s transmission could lock up completely, thus increasing the risk of a crash.

Honda is addressing this recall by replacing the transmission on vehicles with 15,000 miles or less. If your 2003 Pilot has more than 15,000 miles on it, a service technician will inspect and revise the oil cooler return line to prevent heat buildup.

If there is already noticeable damage or discoloration to the gears, the transmission will be replaced at no charge.

How Do You Handle an Open Transmission Recall on a 2003 Honda Pilot?

Is your 2003 Pilot part of this transmission recall? To find out, visit the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) website and enter your VIN to find out. From there, you’ll be alerted if your vehicle has any open recalls.

You can then contact Honda’s customer service department at 1-800-999-1009 to get answers to your questions and be walked through the steps of having your recall addressed. This will likely mean scheduling a service appointment at your local Honda dealer.

2003 Honda Pilot
Bought this Honda Used, with the oil cooler already installed. I did not know about the recall at time of buying it. I think they should of informed me. Trans failed at 176,000 mi. Oil changes were done.
