Ford released the Fusion in 2006 to give loyal customers a comfortable and efficient mid-size sedan to enjoy. However, even sporting a nameplate as respected as Ford, it wasn’t immune to recalls.

How many recalls have been issued for the 2009 Ford Fusion?

As of September 2020, there have been only 3. These include:

  • Potential ABS valve malfunction
  • Frontal airbag inflator might explode
  • Defective floor mats might block a pedal

Thankfully, in this article, we’ll cover each of these 2009 Fusion recalls in detail. We’ll then provide step-by-step instructions on how to get them resolved.

Potential ABS Valve Malfunction

NHTSA Recall ID: 19V904000

To activate the anti-lock braking system, the valves in the ABS hydraulic control units must open and close on demand.

When you use brake fluid with additives that prevent corrosion in your 2009 Fusion, the chemicals can gum up the valves and keep them from closing all the way. When that happens, you may need to press the brake pedal a lot more to slow down the car, which could result in an accident.

Resolving this issue starts with a brake flush using an approved DOT 4 fluid. Techs must also install a new reservoir cap for the brake fluid filler neck. Only then can they test the function of the brakes and see if the pedal travel issue is resolved.

If the brakes still do not function right, they will need to replace the hydraulic control unit in full, then test the system once again.

Frontal Airbag Inflator Explosion Risk

NHTSA Recall ID: 18V046000

When creating the 2009 Fusion, Ford installed airbags from Takata, which ended up having inflators prone to catastrophic failure.

When exposed to high temps and lots of humidity, these airbags have the potential to explode the second they are deployed. When that happens, metal shrapnel can fly out and cause serious injuries or death.

To fix the problem, technicians just have to remove and replace the inflator for the frontal passenger airbag. The new inflators contain a different propellant that does not degrade with exposure to heat or humidity.

Defective Floor Mats Could Block Gas Pedal

NHTSA Recall ID: 14E028000

Ford Fusion Floor Mat

Floor Mats that do not lie flat against the ground can prove dangerous if they curl up and block the gas pedal from returning to its neutral position. Unfortunately, this is what happened in many 2009 Fusions, resulting in this recall.

Thankfully, all it takes is replacing the floor mats to resolve this issue. If you need to drive the vehicle down to the shop for this repair, just remove the floor mat and put it in the trunk before you head out.

How Do You Handle an Open Recall on a 2009 Ford Fusion?

To find out if the 2009 Ford Fusion you want to buy is due for recall repairs, you can type its VIN into the Ford Recalls and Field Service Actions tool.

After hitting search, the tool will let you know if the car has already come in for repairs and which ones are still due. Don’t stop there, however, as there is a little bit more research to do before buying the car.

You can also take a look at its accident history, title status, and other personal data through a VIN search from Vehicle History.
