Key Points

  • The 2011 Honda Accord has nine recalls issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, covering two main issues: faulty airbag inflators and improperly-tightened suspension components.
  • Five recalls deal with malfunctioning front passenger airbag inflators, while another three cover the incorrectly installed replacement inflator.
  • A different recall addresses improperly fastened front suspension bolts and spindle nuts.
  • Out of the 261 registered complaints, several consumers report airbag issues, while others experience excessive engine rattling, sudden loss of power, poorly designed seats, structural leaks, and power steering failure.

2011 Honda Accord has Multiple Recalls for Malfunctioning and Improperly Installed Airbags, Part of the Massive Takata Recall

Out of the nine recalls issued for the 2011 Honda Accord, eight deal with faulty and improperly installed front passenger airbag inflators. Per the NHTSA, the issue is due to long-term exposure to high heat and humidity. An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants and resulting in serious injury or death.

Honda suspects around 20,000 Accords have new airbag inflators that may have been installed incorrectly. As a result, the automaker recommends avoiding the use of the front passenger seat until proper repairs are done.

The very first recall the 2011 Honda Accord received was not over airbags but instead focused on front suspension damper bolts and spindle nuts that may not have been properly tightened, which can lead to a loss of steering control and increase the risk of a crash.

The infamous Takata airbag issue has unfortunately led to several serious injuries and even deaths, reports Car and Driver.

Several 2011 Accord Owners Complain of Excessive Engine Rattling and Unexpected Loss of Power, Resulting in a Lawsuit

Out of the 261 complaints registered with the NHTSA, a total of 41 are against the 2011 Accord’s engine and powertrain. The majority of the complaints involve the engine’s variable timing control actuator, citing 2011 Accords with the 2.4L inline-four engine making a rattling noise, especially during cold starts. The fix costs between $700 and $900 and could lead to engine failure if not done.

Another set of complaints involve the Accord’s variable cylinder management. The issue, however, is exclusive to the 3.5-liter V6 models and has affected nearly 1.9 million units. Per one 2011 Honda Civic owner, it causes an unexpected loss of power, and then the engine hesitates to accelerate.

A class-action lawsuit was filed against the Japanese automaker alleging engine misfire, premature spark plug failure, and excessive oil burning. Honda agreed to settle by offering a warranty extension.

As for the powertrain, some owners report rough shifting in Accords fitted with the torque converter automatic. One driver noticed the transmission slipping and leaking fluid, others report the car exhibiting choppy gear changes when downshifting.

2011 Honda Accord Reportedly has Poorly Designed Seats that can Lead to Back and Neck Pain

Several owners reported having back pain due to the Accord’s poorly designed driver’s seat, saying they found the lumbar support to be overly protruding, causing discomfort.

The front passenger seat has also been cited as a source of discomfort that has caused back and neck pain in some drivers. There are also reports of the headrests causing problems due to their lack of adjustment.

One owner reports, “My neck gets stiff after about 30 minutes, there is no adjustment allowed on the headrest, and the only relief is to recline the backrest.”

Some 2011 Accords Have Complaints Lodged Over Structural Leaks and Power Steering Failure

The NHTSA has received a total of 36 complaints regarding structural leaks and steering failure, with the majority of the structural issues involving a problem with water ingress. During inclement weather, water seeps in, destroying the headliner and soaking the side curtain airbags.

Several complainants have replaced the windshield, only to find that it wasn’t causing the problem. However, one 2011 Accord owner diagnosed the cause to be the weather stripping clogging up near the car’s roof. Other structural complaints include paint chipping, and injuries caused by the trunk lid not staying up and closing unexpectedly.

As for the steering failure, reports of the 2011 Accord’s power steering leaking have been registered. This leads to a sudden loss of control and increases the risk of an accident.

Additionally, a few owners have had issues with excessive steering vibration. The root cause is yet to be determined, and only a handful of complaints have been registered. Although the NHTSA has a couple of cases of the car unintentionally accelerating, there aren’t any crashes or injuries reported.

Despite Airbag Issues and Seats that can be a Pain in the Neck, the 2011 Honda Accord is a Reliable Sedan

The Honda Accord is a very popular and reliable midsize sedan. And its reputation has been pretty solid and unshakable since it began production in 1976. The 2011 model is no exception despite the fact that it has nine recalls and over 260 consumer complaints.

When you look at the big picture, you’ll see the 2011 Honda Accord is still a pretty good car when you consider that eight of the nine recalls are related to the same Takata airbag issue that affected multiple automakers. And for a vehicle to have just over 260 complaints and zero investigations after being on the road for over a decade, it is a good sign of a well-made midsize vehicle.

Plus, many of those complaints relate to the airbags. So, despite these issues, the 2011 Honda Accord is a decent buy on the used car market.

What Year Honda Accord Should I Avoid?

Accords from 2008 are better to avoid as they struggle with rampant reports of premature brake wear, and usually need to be replaced every 30,000 miles or so. What's more, drivers also report squeaky brakes, warped rotors, vibrations when braking, and even total brake system failure while driving.

What Year Honda Accord is Best?

The 2017 and 2018 Accords, the first two years of the 10th generation, offer the most value under $20,000. The 2017 Accord is also the first to feature optional Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. With a budget around $5,000, a 2007 Honda Accord is a fantastic choice, with a low number of recalls and registered complaints.

The basic Honda model car/is it worth the cost?
This car has a habit of sliding in the rain or wet roads after stepping on the gas pedal at a stop light, the windows fog up easily especially the back window and with no windshield wiper in the rear, you can not see out the back window. The seats are very hard to move forward and back with the bar under the seat. The plastic over the headlights turns yellow and opaque fast, which makes it difficult for the lights to shine through so it is hard to see at night. There is a lack of storage space in the car and no arm rests on the seats, which makes it uncomfortable to drive for long periods of time. This car feels unsafe, like it vibrates if going over the speed of 80 miles per hour. This car might last to 200,000 miles, if cared for, without falling apart, but the high cost of this car compared to other cars of the same size, you can get either a better model with more features or same basic features for thousands less. As this car has your basic everything. Plus, it does not pick up speed fast so it feels dangerous entering a highway, trying to pass another car, or speeding up after a stop light with the flow of traffic.

Caught fire
In 2019 I bought a 2011 Honda Accord Ex-L as a first car for my sons. It was running pretty well and being properly maintained until suddenly it started to smoke from under the hood while my son was driving it recently and it proceeded to catch on fire; not a small fire that could be easily extinguished but a raging fire. Again, oil had been recently changed, battery was 2 years old. No check engine light on. No idea what caused the fire. Fortunately, he was fine but the car is gone.

A wannabe Toyota Camry that is not as good.
The problems consist of leather being easily dinged up, the ceiling glue causing the fabric to droop, and the sun visors being loose that cause it to fall down randomly. The leather is soft and plush. The car has a stiff breaks but handles well except for stormy weather and sand. There is standard features with really no electronics. There is built in subs but they are complete trash.

2011 accord with problems.
Too many small problems and the dealer charges high rates just to tell me that it will cost a fortune to fix it. I have had engine problems, radiator hose leaks and transmission slips. When I take it in to the dealer, they charge over 100 just to diagnose and then seem to say I need to replace everything.

2011 Reliability
I purchased a 2011 V6 used. I replaced the timing belts, brakes, and headlamps. I really enjoy this vehicle. I purchased it in Maryland and drove to Florida. No issues. The only problem I've had was the Radio, XM. Sometimes the radio has a mind of its own. Gas mileage is great.

Maintenance is very minimal on this particular vehicle.
The car has not given me much trouble over the span of the last nine years. Except for routine maintenance here and there and the occasional having to fix something it has driven well past what I would have expected it to do. There is also very low miles on this vehicle.

I like the functions of the driver's seat, the sunroof.
This particular car sits too low. I do not like the console, it is hard to reach the cord for my to charge, the drink holders are set too far back. I do not like the interior. I do not like the fact that if I am in the left to move to the right lane it is hard to see.

The two door sucks. Never will I buy again.
Too small not comfy and I feel smashed. The back there is not enough space. The trunk is awful. I love Honda but it is has to be the four door. Two is god awful. Do not go shopping with this car there’s no space. Its reliable as must Honda’s are. But never again.

Aux input issue is extremely annoying.
The aux input does mess up eventually. I thought it was my aux cord at first and I ended up having to purchase multiple aux cords. It apparently is a wiring issue within the car regarding the input. It is the only thing is upsetting about the vehicle.

2011 Honda accord reviews.
Bought my vehicle used... The window trim is falling off on multiple windows. The paint has begun to chip though. It is only a 4 cylinder and it takes a lot of pushing on the gas to get it to go when the air conditioning is running.

Honda Accord: tires lose air pressure; dealership unable to find the problem.
Typically, these cars require only routine maintenance, and last for years and years. The only problem I have had is that the tires constantly lose air pressure. The dealership has checked it out and cannot find the problem.

Do not drive in rural areas at night. Headlights do not work properly!
Honda botched the whole Takata airbag issue so badly that I will never buy another Honda again. Can't wait to dump mine. Hate the headlights, too. They do not work correctly, and Honda will not address the issue at all.

Some minor cosmetic and sensor issues.
Air bag recalls and o2 sensor issues once the car hit 75k miles. Check engine light remain on despite service. I also noticed the roof lining of the car has been coming apart very easily in hot weather.

Vehicle Review Maintenance
Routine oil changes and tire changes as needed are completed. The compressor did go out and the whole unit had to be replaced. Besides some minor electrical issues, nothing else has been faulty.

It is a very reliable car but you will not be rolling in style.
The only thing is that it keeps saying that the tpms is always on. The wheels are not the original so maybe because of that. Other than that the paint job is not good. The pair job is cracked.

Honda review.
I have had issues with the brakes a lot lately. It is a bigger car as well so I sometimes have a hard time seeing over the hood because I am a short woman.

While it is very long, there is limited storage space.
I dislike the length of the vehicle in relation to its actual storage space. It is too long, without much space. I would prefer a hatchback.

Original mileage. Not had much trouble out of it.
Sits too low. It has transmission problems. It is a 4 cylinder. Too small. Not what I wanted and never really liked it.

Honda makes headlights that are not effective or safe. They do not admit that there is a problem. Honda completely botched the Takata airbag fiasco, and people were killed because of it.
It is unsafe to drive at night in rural areas. Stop signs cannot be seen at a safe distance without using brights.

Overpriced and expensive to maintain.
Front and back wheel bearings, brakes and windshield wipers. Also, weak engine. It is a four cylinder.

My Accord is boring. I see myself coming and going. The gas mileage is not what I expected.

Leather seats and seat warmers for a v4.
The car has an airbag recall. The v4 engine is not as fast as v6.
