2011 Hyundai Sonata

In 2016, a used 2011 Hyundai Sonata was a smart purchase. In 2022, it may be more of a money pit. Engine stall, airbag failure, and wobbly steering, combined with the normal wear and tear you see in an eleven-year-old mid-size, make for a car that’s hard to depend on.

  • The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the 2011 Hyundai Sonata with the Top Safety Pick, while the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the car five stars overall in their crash tests.
  • High pressure fuel pipe leaks may lead to engine stall or even fires.
  • Wobbly steering remains a major issue despite recalls.
  • Airbags and seatbelt pretensioners have been seen to fail owing to issues in the airbag control unit.
  • The NHTSA reports 14 recalls, 8 investigations, and 3,137 complaints on file for the 2011 Sonata.

High Pressure Fuel Pipe Leaks and Worn Connecting Rods May Lead to Engine Stall

There have been two engine recalls for the 2011 Hyundai Sonata, one in 2015 for nearly half a million units with worn connecting rods, and one in 2018 for high pressure fuel pipe leaks. In either instance, you’re probably going to see engine stall if you don’t get the repairs taken care of.

In the case of the connecting rod, a part that transfers combustion power toward the axle, you’re seeing metallic factory debris jamming up the works and causing premature wear. In the case of the fuel pipe leaks, you’re seeing problems in the fuel distribution which will leave your cylinders gasping for fuel and gas spilling under the hood.

Despite these two recalls, there have been dozens of engine complaints in the last year alone, and more than one hundred since 2018. One recent complaint reports knocking sounds on startup, and excessive oil consumption. Another claims that the engine blew out at just 109,000 miles. Stalling complaints are the most common.

Among these complaints are reports of Hyundai dealers refusing to administer repairs. In one instance this was because the driver had a salvage rather than a clean title. In others, drivers are informed by mechanics that their damages are the result of normal wear and tear.

Clicking Noises and Loose Steering May Point to Worn Rack and Pinion Gears

There were two steering recalls in 2010, with the car still fresh on the market. The first of these recalls covered more than 100,000 units with improperly assembled steering column assemblies, while the second was a followup adding sixty more VINs to the list.

Next came a 2016 recall for 173,000 units experiencing power steering assist failure, and, eventually, more than a thousand complaints for various steering issues, both related and unrelated to these recalls. Among the most common complaints: clicking noises and loose steering.

This typically points to a worn gear in the rack and pinion system. Specifically, the steering column coupler, a part that transfers a turn of the steering wheel into the steering rack. After 11 years on the market, it’s possible that this comes down to typical wear and tear, but when combined with other steering issues, it’s worrying.

All you can do as a potential Sonata buyer is give the steering a rigorous check when you take the car on a test drive. See how it performs at low and high speeds, see how it handles lane changes and sharp turns. The car is out of warranty and the recalls might not cover it, so be on the lookout for major steering problems.

Airbags Continue to Fail Despite Recall

More than a half million Sonatas were recalled in 2018 for airbag and seatbelt pretensioner failure owing to a short circuit in the airbag control unit. Despite this, more than one hundred airbag complaints have been registered since the recall went into effect.

A typical complaint reports the airbags simply do not deploy in the event of an accident. Some drivers report difficulties in getting the recall taken care of, due to parts shortages or even miscommunication with the staff at the dealership. There are also reports of airbag warning lights staying on.

The best way to handle this problem is to avoid it. Getting the airbag recall taken care of sounds like it could be more trouble than it’s worth, so if you’re going to buy a 2011 Sonata, check the VIN and make sure that it’s already had the repairs taken care of.

In total, there have been 392 complaints registered for the car’s airbags, but just one recall and no further investigation.

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata Was a Great Used Car, Six Years Ago

When a car gets to a certain age, you’re going to see the complaints stack higher and higher until you have a 2011 Sonata with 3,137 reports on file, plus fourteen recalls and eight investigations. That doesn’t mean that it’s a bad car, just that it’s past its sell-by date.

Once a car hits its tenth birthday, the question isn’t so much whether it’s a good used car, but whether or not it’s a classic. In short: keeping this thing running is going to cost you more each month than would payments on a new car.

Brand new engine at 100,000 miles, but was the hassle worth it?
I have had way too many unexpected issues with this car. First, the starter had to be replaced after 1 year, then come to find out there was a factory recall on the starter. Then maybe 2 years later, the engine failed! Again, this was a highlighted factory recall along with 13 other recalls all on a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. Hyundai was great working with me through these recalls, however, it took over 3 months for the engine to come in, then another few weeks for them to install it! My car sat outside in the dead of winter for over 3 months. Then to get the car back finally, and now there is rust on the brakes because it was sitting for so long and Hyundai claimed there was nothing they could do.

You will spend most of your time scheduling recall appointments
Within one month of buying my car the engine failed during a snowstorm and had to be towed to the dealership to be repaired which was luckily under warranty. However, I have received more recall notices than I can count. It seems that every time I get a recall I fixed I am getting another notice in the mail about another recall that needs to be fixed. I will never buy another Hyundai again. Also the speakers consistently go out due to loose wiring.

Engine recall on the 2011 Sonata. Around 120,000 miles (conveniently when the extended warranty is up), the engine seizes. BIG problem. Be aware of all the recalls on this vehicle.
For some reason the 2011 Sonata has A LOT of issues. There have been recalls on the door handles, gear shifts, airbags, engine, and SO much more. I am a broke college student, and during finals week, my engine seized. I was 5 hours from home and left high and dry. Fortunately, it was covered by the extended warranty. Recently the airbag light has come on, which I understand is a common problem, and the headlights and taillights go out like crazy.

2011 Hyundai Sonata is unreliable and unsafe.
This car had so many recalls ever since it came out. There were minor problems and major problems like engine stalling. These problems kept occurring and made it unsafe for driving. My car would not start more than 3 times in one year. I took it to the dealership to fix and they could not find the problem. They were not willing to find a solution and charged me for unnecessary repairs.

Lots of little issues.
There have been lots of recall issues with this vehicle, however Hyundai seems eager to fix the problems. The issues have been large enough to disruptive moments in our life. Engine failure. Airbag failure. My car stalled out of me, completely shutting off, while driving 40mph on an exit ramp. Scary. But it was a recall and new engine replaced.
accountCircle Kelsey M on December 3, 2022
Wish I knew about the issues before buying.
The car was only 3 years old when the starter went. There then was an official recall on the starter. Then, another 3 years later, the engine went. When I brought it into the dealership, there was a recall on the engine and 11 other recalls as well! Very scary and unreliable car. I am looking to trade it in soon.

Sonata, meh. Nothing to brag about.
I have had quite a few issues with the steering, struts and quality of the reception with the antenna on this car. I owned two Camrys before purchasing the Sonata so base my comparison of the Sonata on those and they're supposed to be of similar type/quality but I'd say Camry is far superior to drive.

My 2011 Hyundai Sonata GLS has had many issues. This car is a lemon.
Ever since I bought the vehicle used, there have been over 10 recalls on this specific vehicle, as well as it has had multiple electrical issues. Also, the brake pads wear very easily and need replaced frequently. I would not recommend this vehicle to anyone, please do not buy.

Not good quality. I would never purchase outside of a Honda again
This is the first vehicle that I have had that has so many recalls. Not just one at a time usually 3-5 every few months. It seems that before the recall is received by me my car already has the problem going on. Not a very reliable car at all. Check engine light never goes off

Worst car I have ever owned.
The rack and pinion has been replaced two times because of a defective attachment and the manufacturer will not admit there is a defect, also went to a high pressure car wash and the paint started flying off. Because of the defect also front tires need replacing often.

This car has many recalls.
The care has a lot of recalls, about five every year. The air conditioner has had many problems in the last two years, and does not work properly. It has been changed out three times. The headlights and bright are not very bright, so it is hard to see at night.

No comments other to state that I probably not purchase another Hyundai.
Numerous recalls, some being incomplete. Gasoline gauge does not register correctly and to correct such seems rather expensive. Calls to us Hyundai he are not. Answered completely or not at all. At times the car has not started. And neither dealer not Hyundai.

Because of mechanical issues and poor resale value, this car was not worth what we paid for it.
It seems to keep having problems with the wheels and it had random engine/computer issues in the first year we had it. It was only two years old when we got it and I wasn't expecting a car that new to have so many issues, so it was pretty disappointing.
accountCircle Rhonda R on December 3, 2022
Hyundai issues more recalls than any vehicle I've owned.
The vehicle had problems starting 6 weeks after I bought it new. The stop lamp switch was replaced 4 times within 6 months of purchase. Even though it drives fine there have been numerous recalls to deal with. I would not purchase a Hyundai again.

Cheaply made vehicle that needs frequent repairs.
Many recalls, check engine light is always on, difficulties renewing license plates. The electrical system was faulty. The sound system is faulty. This car does not seem like quality, but rather cheap.

Tire pressure and suspension.
I feel like the biggest problem I have with my car is the constant low tire pressure I have and also the rattling and it not taking bumps how normal cars should, a small bump is like an earthquake.
accountCircle Rosa H on December 3, 2022
I would avoid this if possible.
This car has cost me a lot in repairs over the years which is why I gave it 3/5. To explain, there have been many recalls, paint chips easily, electrical problems, many problems with my tires.
accountCircle Annie stickler on December 3, 2022
Waste of money
Steer clear of this vehicle. Complete engine recall two years ago. New engine installed with only a 12,000 mile warranty. This is a disposable car!! Cheap parts cheap tires cheap engine

Lots of recalls and safety issues and bugs that needed to be fixed.
I would not recommend this particular vehicle. It has been plagued by a series of small bugs, and larger problems; some covered by recall, and some were not.
accountCircle Carmen C on December 3, 2022
I talked about the look of my car and the problems with it.
We have to get a new transmission because of a recall and there were 6 other recalls we have to get fixed. I would feel more safe with out all the problems.
accountCircle j e on December 3, 2022
It sucks, bad model all around. Maybe other models are better but I won't be trying them.
The 13 recalls and countless things wrong like rusting from the inside and being repainted 4 times?
accountCircle Abigail A on December 3, 2022
The engine block has been recalled. The factory they were manufactured in switched cleaning systems and fiberglass got into the engine blocks, causing them to die around 100,000 miles.
Narrow windows which make for large blind spots. Has had largely inconvenient recall issues.
accountCircle Long N on December 3, 2022
There is an engine problem. Will cost you 5 grand if dealership isn't covering it
It is always broken and it cost a lot of money to maintained
