2011 Volkswagen Jetta’s Problems with Engine Stalls and Airbag Failure Sound Scary, but They’re Uncommon

The 2011 Jetta is what you’d expect from VW: solid engineering, high safety ratings, and a comfortable ride. However, it has its share of problems, like the ignition key getting stuck, engine stalls, and faulty airbags. But they tend to be infrequent issues.

Key Points

  • The 2011 Volkswagen Jetta‘s most common problem sees the ignition key getting stuck in the “on” position when you’re trying to bring it to a stop.
  • The engine may stall out in some 2011 Jettas, owing to an issue with the electrical fuses where the system would shut down.
  • The car has been under NHTSA investigation for a broken clockspring in the airbag for more than five years now.
  • At the end of the day, a 2011 VW Jetta is a fine-used car with few common flaws, especially considering its low entry price of about $6,000.

Ignition Key in Some 2011 Jettas May Get Stuck in ‘On’ Position

Fresh off a 2010 redesign, the “New Compact Sedan” 2011 Jetta had its share of kinks to work out in the electrical department, with approximately 200 of the nearly 600 NHTSA complaints pointing to problems in this category. As is usually the case with electrical problems, it’s a whole bunch of different issues, but with a few recurring patterns. Among the most common concerns: the ignition key has a tendency to get stuck, refusing to turn back to the off position.

One driver reports that “a few times my key got stuck in the ignition with the car on and would not turn off for a long time.” Another owner mentions, “the ignition key will not turn backwards to turn the car off.” A similar report states, “two months ago, the key got stuck in the ignition and would not turn off.”

Typically the key will take up to a half-hour before you can turn it off, and there’s not much you can do but park somewhere safe and wait it out.

The 2011 Jetta was subject to an ignition key recall, but not for this. In August, 2019, over half a million Volkswagens were called back to the dealer for a fix because the key could be pulled out while the car was in drive. Nice that they took care of that, but drivers experiencing the opposite problem have yet to be given a solution.

2011 Jetta’s Engine May Stall Due to Electrical Issues

Another electrical issue, but this one overlapping with many of the engine complaints: in a number of 2011 Volkswagen Jettas, there is the risk of a blown fuse resulting in total electrical shutdown, including the engine management system.

The good news is they recalled this one pretty quick. The issue led to a recall in March 2011, before the car was even a year old, with just over 71,000 units being called in for repairs.

There have been a few reports of engines stalling since then, however. One driver stated in early 2021, “My car would randomly stall while driving, happens both when braking and not braking.

Whether the recall proved to be inadequate, the complaints point to another issue entirely, or the owners of these cars simply didn’t bother having the initial recalls done, there’s no telling. But the vast majority of complaints pointing to engine stall are at least five years old, so if this issue hasn’t been eradicated entirely, we can at least say that new incidents are rare.

Airbag Investigation on 2011 Jetta Remains Open…Over Six Years Later

The 2011 Jetta has been the subject of an ongoing NHTSA investigation since early 2015. The initial 2015 recall was closed, then a follow-up investigation was launched in late 2017, and that investigation was closed with the launch of an engineering analysis in early 2018.

The investigation has to do with a number of complaints regarding the front driver airbag. In affected units, there is a clockspring that can fail to engage if too much debris works its way in there, meaning that the airbags won’t deploy as expected.

One driver reports that when turning their steering wheel to park they “heard a noise in the steering wheel that sounded like a wire stretching.” Shortly thereafter, the airbag light came on, and the dealer informed that while there was a recall for this issue, their car wasn’t covered in it.

This brings us to the purpose of the investigation, which is essentially to determine if another recall is warranted, and if so, which units will be affected by it.

2011 VW Jetta is Still a Safer-than-average Pick with Few Common Problems

An open investigation sounds scary, but the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta is still a safe pick for a used car buyer. It has a four-star safety rating with the NHTSA, a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS, and Kelley Blue Book values starting at well under $6,000.

Engine stalls and broken airbags can be a major issue in affected units, but the rate of incident is pretty low, and a thorough test drive will tip you off to any problems. Overall, you could do a lot worse at that price.

NEVER AGAIN!! DEVIL CAR
HOLY COW, where to start...bought a 2011 SEL jetta 5 speed. Had 110,000 miles, not cheap at 6k!! First thing, O2 sensor went within the 1st month...next month EPC light came on...changed all spark plugs and coils...then it rained, and doors wouldnt shut and interior lights wouldnt turn off...quick fix was WD40 in the door locks...next ran over 2 inches of snow...radiator support bracket snapped off. Disassemblex entire front end to find radiator pieces fell off!!! Ive had this nightmare for 5 months and after my life of WONDERFUL volvos, i am missing work doing repairs, poor as hell doing these repairs myself, and the stress is absolutely killing me. I never hated am inanimate object more than i do this horrible horrible car.

Drives well but dashboard warning lights are unreliable.
The electrical system on my car is not dependable. The headlights need to be replaced frequently and often warning lights go off on the dashboard but there is not really a problem as indicated by the light. Often the warning light that goes off is the headlight warning light. I have vinyl seats. The vinyl on the driver's seat is torn even though I do not think that I am particularly rough on the car and it was torn at about 40 thousand miles -- not that much use.

Overall, I'd rate my experience with this vehicle as a 7/10.
When I first purchased my Volkswagen vehicle, I really did love it. But now, as I have put over 100,000 miles on the vehicle, I have been having serious reliability issues with it. I have had headlight and tail light malfunctions as well as many engine issues that have been very costly to repair. Overall, unfortunately, I would not recommend this vehicle for car buyers.

Beware of buying a VW or just do not do it!
Well, this Jetta was one of the emissions problems and that is exactly what I have had... Problems! I upgraded my tailpipe but that got replaced without my approval. The radio stopped working and VW would not fix it. The heat stopped working and VW would not fix it. They did fix the emissions but now I cannot pass a smog test.

Reliable but with an asterisk.
Many problems with recall - this is the year VW lied about their emissions. After 100k miles, many strange problems and have been issued a recall recently. Has good gas mileage but acceleration is very restrained, appears to have problems transitioning between 55-60 mph. Windshield wipers are ridiculously expensive for it.

Should you buy a Volkswagen? Is it worth the repairs?
Volkswagens are very expensive to fix and unfortunately, I bought my car when it needed some repairs that I was unaware of. I would not buy a German car again given the price of repairs. It drives nice and it is comfortable but I am not sure it is worth the price. I will also never buy used again given my experience.

Electrical problems, always.
Electrical issues, anything to do with wires is an issue, radio went, cruise control went, and all before 60 thousands miles, it is incredible how much has gone wrong in such little time. I recommend jetta’s but you have to be the lucky one and get one that does not have electrical problems.

In summary, an overpriced not so reliable car.
I am a Volkswagen enthusiast but this Jetta was just awful. Everything decides to break at once and is super expensive to replace. And full synthetic oil changes are too expensive. Constantly misfiring even when all the spark plugs and 02 sensors and catalytic converter had been replaced.

Uncomfortable Car - A Car That Looks Decent in Size but isn't when you're in it
Acceleration isn't great. Have always had difficulty in extreme weather. Doesn't drive well in the rain or when it is very hot out. The interior of the car is also pretty uncomfortable. It feels pretty cramped in the front of the car. Passengers sometimes complain about comfort.

The Volkswagen Jetta is not a terrible car but is not a good car.
Air conditioner does not work well. Interior on seats ripped after a few years of use and care. Engine revs up aggressively when started even after filters are cleaned and checked. All black interior and exterior makes the car really hot especially when living in California.

2011 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0 non turbo is a nice little car for a new driver.
Car is really slow. It does not have a center console. Windshield wipers are difficult to get. It is comfortable. Since it is the base model it does not have too many options. It comes with steel wheels and hubcaps. It's a good car for a new driver. It's just not for me.

Seats 5, color is silver, sunroof, decent gas mileage,
Headlights, weird noises coming from engine, overheating, air conditioning does not work in the summer and the heat does not work in the winter. Radio also cut out and will not work which will cost 300 for radio itself along with almost 1000 to get it put in.

The good, the bad and the truth.
Couple of mechanical issues in recent years but has been one of the best carani have had. I had a short in my wiring that became an issue but was easily fixed. Performance has been pretty good as I have had it for about 5 years already.

Don't buy a VW! Lots of shops won't even work on them. The parts are hard to get to and everything that needs to be fixed costs 10x as much on a VW.
This is my second VW and I have the same mechanical issues. It has less than 100k miles and I have it in the shop every week. There are always bad sensors, dashboard lights on. VWs are basically a money pit.

Will look forward to buying a new one soon.
It makes a really annoying sound that sounds like a bird is tweeting. My air conditioning went out once but that was really nothing to do with the quality of the car.

It's terribly hot inside no matter if I keep it in the shade or out in the sun
My car gets way too hot from the sun. It feels like a fire when I get inside. The windows squeak and I've had a lot or different problems with my car in general

This car has always had electrical problems from the day I bought it.
Electrical problems have plagued me from day 1. I cannot wait until I can afford to buy another car and get rid of this one. Worst car I have ever owned.

VW jetta has been a headache
The car runs well but it has had electrical issues. Lights, heater, radio, airbag light have all been a problem. 2 radios have been installed
accountCircle Grace L on July 20, 2021
I have only had it for a few years and it seems to be having a lot of issues for its age.
Dislike that it is so low to the ground. It also takes a while to accelerate.
accountCircle Ashley C on October 4, 2021
It wasn't as expensive as I thought since it is a foreign car.
The ignition had gotten stuck multiple times so I had to have that replaced.
