Silver 2012 Hyundai Sonata From Front-Driver Side

The 2012 Hyundai Sonata has a total of eight recalls from its manufacturer, Hyundai, but like many car safety recalls, some of them are related, covering additional vehicles to the original group of cars where the problem was discovered.

In the case of Hyundai’s 2012 Sonata, some vehicles have been recalled for problems related to their original repair under a recall notice. The recall notices for the 2012 Hyundai Sonata include problems with airbags, engine issues, fuel system, power train, seat belts, and service brakes.

You can check whether your 2012 Hyundai Sonata is affected by these recalls by entering your car’s VIN in the Hyundai safety recall and service campaign search tool, or by entering your VIN in the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA)’s online safety recall checking tool.

Potential High-Pressure Fuel Pipe Leaks

On December 28, 2018, Hyundai recalled over 150,000 vehicles, including Hyundai Sonatas made between 2011 and 2014 for potential problems with the high-pressure fuel pipe that connects to the fuel pump outlet. All of the recalled vehicles were previously repaired during Hyundai’s recall numbers 14V-568 and 17V-226, related to engine stalling and connecting rod wear.

This recall is a follow-up to the previous recall due to potential problems with damaged, misaligned, or improperly torqued fuel pipe alignment. The improperly installed high-pressure fuel pipe represents a potential fire hazard.

Engine Stall Due To Connecting Rod Wear

Some of the 470,000 Hyundai vehicles affected by connecting rod wear could be part of the 2018 High-Pressure Fuel Pipe Leak recall, but in September 2015, Hyundai issued a recall for 2011-2012 Sonatas which were made between December 11, 2009 and April 12, 2012 at the Hyundai plant in Alabama. The affected Sonatas were made with a 2.0 or 2.4-liter gasoline direct injection engine.

The cause of the recall is metal debris that was not completely removed during manufacturing. Connecting rods damaged by the debris make a metallic knocking noise and can eventually cause engine failure.

Hyundai’s recall and instructions to dealers included free inspection and engine replacement. Hyundai Motor North America also increased its short block engine sub-assembly warranty to 10 years and 120,000 miles for all vehicles affected by the recall. Hyundai’s number for this major recall is 132, and the NHTSA recall number is 15V568000.

Disabled Airbag/Seat Belt Pretensioners

In February and April 2018, Hyundai recalled over 580,000 vehicles, including 2012 Sonatas and 2012 Sonata Hybrids which had potential faults in their airbag control units (ACU). The faulty units could short circuit in an accident, leading to malfunctions in the seat belt pretensioners, and failure of front and side airbags to deploy.

Hyundai’s recall repair is an external wire filter kit, which will correct the potential failure in the airbag control unit (ACU).

Seat Belt Linkage Detachment Problems

In October 2017, Hyundai recalled approximately 443,000 vehicles, including 2011-2014 Sonata and 2011-2014 Sonata Hybrids which had been previously repaired under its seat belt linkage recall 17V-152. Hyundai rechecked and verified the seat belt linkage and pretensioner to ensure safety. Hyundai recalled nearly one million 2011-2014 Sonata and 2011-2015 Sonata Hybrids in April 2017 to repair the seatbelt linkage problem. The second recall was necessary because some repairs were not properly executed, leading to the need for additional checks and repairs.

Brake Pedal Stopper Pad Issues

On January 6, 2016, Hyundai recalled approximately 304,000 2011 to 2012 Sonatas because the brake pedal stopper pad potentially deteriorated, leading to brake lights potentially being displayed incorrectly to vehicles driving behind the Sonata. The problem could potentially lead to accidents due to following drivers being unaware that the Sonata was no longer braking.

In addition, deterioration of the brake pedal stopper pad also caused the transmission to potentially be shifted out of PARK without depressing the brake pedal. Hyundai dealers were instructed to replace the brake pedal stopper pad at no charge.

Transmission Shift Cable Detachment/Risk of Rollaway

On July 18, 2014, Hyundai recalled over 880,000 2011-2014 Sonatas made between December 11, 2009 and May 29, 2014. The transmission shift cable in these cars has the potential to become detached from the shift lever pin, leading to drivers not being able to accurately detect the vehicle’s gear. Potential hazards included the car moving in an unexpected direction, or in not being in PARK when the driver parked the car. The affected cars have the potential of rolling away if they are placed in PARK without the parking brake being applied. Rollaways and wrong gears represent serious safety hazards. Hyundai began inspecting and repairing connections between the transmission shift cable and shift lever in September 2014.

If you own a 2012 Hyundai Sonata, you should have received a notice in the U.S. Mail about your car’s safety recalls. Hyundai refers to state vehicle registrations to notify owners of safety recalls on their cars. You can also look up your car’s recall information using Hyundai’s online recall tool.

Hyundai, like other carmakers, must fix safety recall problems at no charge. You can also keep track of your car’s recall information through the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration’s VIN check tool, and through their SaferCar App.

If you receive a recall notice for your 2012 Hyundai Sonata, don’t disregard it. It could represent a serious safety risk. You can also risk your car’s ability to be repaired under its warranty. Recalls and repairs help you and others to continue driving safely.

Not so happy
My car at first was great,,,when I got a recall, I took it in and had him check it....and when I had a major problem.. Where they’re like replacing the engine ..I wanted them to put it on the machine to have a check-cause I had too many mechanics look at it and tell me I... It was not my transmissions... So when I took it in ...to have it looked at and put on the machine ...my service manager Hattie Bramlitt at Orange Park, wanted to tell me it was my transmission ...it was my transmission, so I spent $5000 getting a used transmission ..(fix)then I drove my car Hyundai Sonata home ...Did not have it 24 hours and it shut off and would not work...because she did not put it on the machine like I asked....,Her mechanics in the back said it was my transmission ...Hattie mechanics in the back ,said it was my transmission and gave me a whole list of things....so my car had to go back to the Orange Park location to have it fixed with a new or rebuilt engine .....Yes that was Free ...So when I got it back and... I drove it For a couple days.... It was making some kind of rattle noise ......my mechanic looked at it guess what they saw.......at his very first glance and looking at it ...apparently my orange Parks mechanic Hattie ....Who was supposed to inspect my car and check it out before I picked it up ......I had one bolt holding my motor in my car... I took it back because I did have pictures and videos of it.....I guess they put the bolt back on it .. .Service light now keeps coming on....so I took it back to Hattie Orangerpark ....now they wanna charge me $2000 to have my motor mount and transmission fixed because I have a problem with my motor mount and transmission......I have done all the recalls that I get, but I guess I did not get a few of them because ...I paid for some of them to get fixed....like my brake light... And few others...I do like my car... But I guess I’m saying I do not like my service manager Hattie Bramlitt in oranger park ....

Unpleasant
My 2012 Sonata Hybrid engine failed on way to Sedona from Phoenix, my insurance company wouldn't cover a tow to a dealership, which being on a tight budget left me destitute for almost two weeks luckily I was able to get a rental and rent a dolly to Move my car to Prescott AZ Findlay Hyundai, whome informed me it was a Warranty issue and after 4 1/2 weeks after false promises and them never returning my calls I hot the cat back. I was assigned a case worker during g this time & there was reimbursements I was told I was entitled to, that they just decided to not give me. This is all to do with me breaking down far from a dealership, having faith in a Hybrid with only 65k on it. This faux pas of mine has screwed NY credit and had me stranded in Arizona for 6 1/2 weeks.

Car is stalling out in the middle of the freeway!
I love this car but I DO NOT love the fact that on multiple occasions it has stopped/stalled in the middle of major freeways! If it hits 4000+ RPM it just dies. I can not reach the correct speed to get onto freeways as well as can not pass cars due to the fact that if the engine re vs and hits that RPM it dies…in the middle of traffic and Imust restart the car from the side of the road. It’s not safe. I now see all these recalls and have made an appointment with the dealership. It was a 1 car owned when I bought it in march (it’s now June) in AL and I’ve moved so I guess I hope that rhe Hyundai dealership will be able to fix whatever is going on.

Hyundai Sonata 2012, recall of the year.
It was pretty good at first, but then some recalls started popping up. The engine was one of them and after they replaced it, now it smells like burnt plastic all the time. The electric has messed up twice and the gas meter once. It runs smoothly. Now there is a recall on the brake pedal, it has been making noises when I brake so I hope it is just that.

Engine recall for 2012 Hyundai sonata.
The biggest concern I have with the 2012 Hyundai sonata is the fact that there is a major recall on the engine for all models made within this year. While the Hyundai company does fully replace the engine and provide a rental car until the fix is made, they only replace it with a refurbished engine, so it is likely that the engine will break again.

A/C not working and recalls
About a year ago, I needed to get my engine replaced and I did not get my car back for months, and it is still not completely fixed. It also had a recall either for its seatbelts or airbags. The air in the car stopped working for a while and whenever the car was stationary it would be unbearably hot in the car.

Very smooth driving experience.
A lot of recalls on my model and year but overall great vehicle, no major issues or anything outside of regular wear and tear and maintenance, I drive a lot so that is really important to me, and it has lasted me a long time, at 200 thousand miles and still going strong. Rides smooth, easy to handle.

The recall edition that includes the engine.
My Hyundai has had way too many recalls since I purchased it. The recalls started the first year that I had it and have not stopped since. I like the look of the car and it drives well but, I really do not understand all the recalls on a new car that also had an engine recall this year.

Hyundai sonata 2012 buyer review.
Had to have a recall on my engine. Some issues with air conditioning. It runs well, just takes a while to get cold. The transmission sometimes kicks. It also has over 100,000 miles on it. I love the car itself it is lasted me a long time and I haven't thought about changing it.

Great for a long work commute
I love my car! I have to travel over 125 miles a day for work and I've had no real problems except the cigarette plugs do not work and they don't know why, and other small things! Like motor recall but when my motor blew I didn't have to pay for it and I got a rental.

My car is very comfortable to drive in
I have had very little issues with my vehicle. The only issues I have had are the multiple recall notices I had to take time to go to the dealer for. Luckily my car never had issues due to these recalls, but they were still annoying to deal with.
accountCircle Chris H on June 28, 2021
It is good for driving around with friends and comfortable for long trips.
My car has been very reliable with few issues. When I did have an issue it was the engine so it was a major problem but was a recall that was then fixed for free. Has all features you can ask for and runs very smoothly.

I love the comfort of my vehicles as well as the sunroof.
I have had it since 2012. I received a ten year warranty on it so all of the issues that I experienced with it have been covered under the warranty. I have had a few recalls that the Hyundai dealership took care of.

Reliability and value, great look. Very nice interior instruments.
I bought this car for my wife back in 2011 and we have had no engine problems at all. Hyundai dealership has been great, contacting us when there is a recall. Also you cannot beat the warranty.

The good and bad of my Sonata
The steering wheel (from what I've researched) is a common problem. There's no recall but the sound it makes is extremely annoying. Easy to maintain and I've had the car for over 2 years.

Purchased the SE January 2012. Love my car!
It currently has 80,000 miles. I do take it to the dealer every 3 months for oil changes and routine maintenance. I also stay on top of any recalls and have them immediately addressed.

Sonata Hyundai performance reviews.
Honestly, this car has been great. It is taken me across the nation reliably. My only complaint is the amount of recalls that have happened in the past. There have been 8 in two years.
accountCircle Cathy C on June 22, 2021
Well built car for the price
There have been a lot of recalls, so that's the downfall. The engine did have to be replaced around 25,000 due to a recall, but so far at 95,000 miles, it's been running great.
accountCircle Molly K on June 24, 2021
Great vehicle when in working order
I've had brake light issues, bulb and harness problems, brake problems, interior electrical malfunctions and I am currently waiting for a recall to be initiated for air bags.

Safety of this vehicle is impressive!
This vehicle has had multiple recalls including having to have the entire engine replaced. I do not care for this vehicle but it is dependable for the most part.

There are a few blind spots while driving.
This car had a lot of recalls but was taken care of by the dealer at no charge. Other than that, it is roomy, fairly dependable and gets great gas mileage.

Would definitely buy again.
My Hyundai is very reliable, very few performance issues, factory recalls were handled with ease, I definitely plan on keeping my car as long as possible.

2012 Hyundai Sonata. It is just an okay car, gets you from here to there.
This Sonata has a 4 cylinder engine, enough power on acceleration. There have been a few minor recalls, however I do not recall anything serious.

Looking to buy a 2012 Hyundai sonata.
It is a very good car. It gave me engine troubles but it came out to be a recall and got it fixed for free at one of their dealers.

Drives very smooth. And I love the car...
My car is very reliable, very comfortable but it is always a lot of recalls. That is the one of the bad things about Hyundai.

Like the sunroof and moonroof
Very comfortable, good on gas, I like how it looks, spacious I'm a big guy. Only cons is too many recalls!

2012 sonata engine recall
I had my vehicle towed to russell Westbrook in anaheim and everything was fixed and they were great 👍
accountCircle Rick O on April 17, 2021
90,000 miles so far and minimal maintenance.
The only issue I have had was a result of the dealership servicing a recall and creating a problem.
accountCircle Edward F on March 14, 2021
I have a red Hyundai sonata with tan leather interior with heated seats and automatic windows.
The steering wheel clicks. I believe it was a recall a couple years ago but I never took it in.
