Key Points

  • A faulty VTC actuator in the 2014 Honda CR-V is the most reported problem with the NHTSA.
  • Several drivers stated that they noticed the CR-V shudders when accelerating lightly between 20-40 mph.
  • The tire pressure monitoring system warning light is another common problem for the 2014 Honda CR-V.
  • Troubles with climate control are not uncommon in the CR-V. Drivers claim it doesn’t blow hot air when needed.
  • The 2014 Honda CR-V has never been recalled, but there are two open investigations concerning problems with faulty airbags that can potentially cause serious or fatal injury.

2014 CR-V’s Most Concerning Problem is with Faulty Airbags, which are the Focus of Two Open Investigations

Although the 2014 Honda CR-V has no recalls on the books, there are two open investigations with the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) concerning problems with faulty airbags that either don’t deploy in an accident, or they have the potential to cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury.

In 2019, an investigation was launched over possible airbag sensor overstress. The investigation focuses on airbag sensors manufactured by a major supplier to Hyundai and Kia. The issue involves a faulty electronic component that monitors signals from crash sensors to determine whether airbag deployment is required, and if so, deploys the appropriate airbags. Although the problem can be potentially dangerous, the NHTSA says the probability of this occurring appears to be low.

A second open investigation was launched in 2021 over concerns of airbag inflator rupture, which resulted from the notorious Takata airbag recall. From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of airbag inflators that proved to be faulty. After prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity, airbag inflators using can degrade and eventually rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury. Both airbag investigations are currently still open.

2014 CR-V’s Problem with VTC Failure, Signaled by a Rattling Noise, can Lead to Costly Engine Replacement

Engine issues accounted for nearly a third of all complaints about the 2014 Honda CR-V. In fact, we found that this was the most common recurring problem listed on the NHTSA. Many drivers stated that they noticed a grinding noise or a rattle, typically on a cold start.

Naturally, because the engine is the most expensive component of the vehicle, drivers panic almost immediately. That’s okay though, drivers should be worried about this problem because a faulty VTC actuator can lead to damaged timing chains, which can lead to a needing a new engine.

The VTC actuator is responsible for Honda’s variable timing. When the timing is off, the engine’s internal components are prone to damage. Honda acknowledged this problem and posted a technical service bulletin to fix the issue. However, because most 2014 CR-Vs are out of warranty, drivers will have to pay out of pocket.

Transmission Shuddering at Low Speeds is Less Common but can be Costly for 2014 Honda CR-V Owners

The second most common issue we found while researching the CR-V’s problems was a shudder that occurs when drivers accelerate at relatively low speeds. Many drivers claimed that when they accelerated at speeds between 20 and 40 mph the vehicle would shutter, vibrate, or surge. This was a common problem for all CR-Vs in the 2012-2014 model year range. The good news is that if it’s caught early it’s a relatively cheap fix. For this issue all drivers need to do is replace the automatic transmission fluid and have a mechanic update the software.

However, if drivers don’t catch this soon enough it could lead to degradation of the transmission, eventually leading to a pricey replacement.

Faulty TPMS Sensor may be a Bother, but it is a Relatively Inexpensive Fix

Drivers have complained to the NHTSA about the CR-V’s faulty tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) sensor. Reportedly, the vehicle indicates the tire pressure is low, when indeed the pressure is fine. Although this is not necessarily a huge problem, it’s widespread. In Honda’s TSB for this repair, the automaker mentions that the vehicle would simply need a software update to fix the malfunction.

In the TSB, Honda mentions the TPMS issue is a problem with all trims and affects FWD and AWD models. If drivers don’t want to pay to get this fixed, they can temporarily reset the light themselves. However, only a dealership can permanently fix the issue.

Faulty Heater in 2014 Honda CR-V can Leave Drivers Out in the Cold

Another common problem for the 2014 CR-V reported to the NHTSA involves a defective heater core. Most drivers who experienced this problem noticed that the heat was not working properly. This was not isolated to one vent but to all of them, including the defroster. However, it was most commonly found in the driver’s side vent. The problem here is that the heater core gets clogged, so the air it blows out isn’t as warm as it should be, causing particular concern in winter months because not only does this prevent warmth, but it also impair the driver’s vision and can be a distraction while driving.

Problems Aside, the 2014 Honda CR-V is a Reliable SUV When Properly Maintained

With all of these problems, the 2014 CR-V must be a poor decision, right? Not necessarily, so long as the vehicle has been properly maintained, common problems can often be nipped in the bud. When you take care of it early, you avoid hefty repair costs like an engine or transmission replacement. Although the CR-V has nearly 500 complaints, it’s a very popular car and it sold more than 325,000 units in 2014 alone. With that in mind, it’s easy to see they are mostly reliable. If you’re in the market for a CR-V, don’t let this list put you off to it. When bought for the right price, the 2014 CR-V is an excellent vehicle. However, it is important to know these common issues so if they arise in your vehicle you can catch them early.

Disappointed in Honda, denying defects.
Purchased a new 2014 for my wife’s grocery getter. We park the car for six months every year while where We retire to AZ for the winters from BC Canada. The battery always goes dead within thirty to forty days, so requires a battery maintainer. Dealer could not find anything wrong after three complaints. The vehicle now has only 35,000 kilometres, when it gets cold the timing chain VTC actuator sounds like it’s going to throw the timing chain through the valve cover for five or six seconds. I have had this issue into the dealer for the past few years and they say they can’t hear it or it’s not doing it after the engine oil heats up and there is tenough pressure to engage the timing belt tightened, the VTC actuator. Now it’s November 2022,it’s started again and it’s quite severe, lasting for a good five seconds, only once during cold weather starts. Now I have to pay for an obvious defect that Honda will not admit to and fix. Many hundreds, possibly thousands of Hondas have reported this defect. Hondas reply….what defect ? The issued a service bulletin, ya great news, I know it’s an issue, they know it’s an issue but they don’t back up a defective issue. The repair can be expensive, and if not fixed it could end up costing a low mileage vehicle a new costly engine replacement. Honda knew from the beginning this was a problem and fixed it during latter productions. As for my wife’s near new, but seven year old, 35000 KLM vehicle, I now pay for Hondas mistakes. The repair will be costly,I’ll get it done then sell the vehicle. I will now never have another Honda product in our driveway. It’s a shame because this Honda will be our last of three new Hondas we have purchased over the last eighteen years. Very disappointed in Honda !

Oil and noise
I bought this at a premium because indications at that point were that it would be the most problem-free. Wrong. I've been very good at following maintenance schedule, performed at Honda dealer. MINOR horrible loud rattling noise, metal-on-metal, when starting. Honda mechanics said they've had lots of these reports and for many have done expensive work replacing stuff but the noise eventually returns anyway so don't worry about it. That seems really unsatisfying. Also, seat trim detatched way sooner than seems reasonable for a new car. MAJOR: My engine totally seized up about 20mo ago while about to enter highway. Only flashed a "check tire inflation" light just prior--no low oil, no check engine, no other indication that something very bad was about to happen. Turned out to be lack of oil (!!), completely frying the engine. It wasn't due for a change and like I said, I was completely following the maintenence schedule, and at the Honda place. Honda denied responsibility--instead, blamed me and said I should be checking oil at every gas fill-up and changing every 7k miles (which is not the on-board maintence reminder schedule). NO OIL or check engine LIGHT warning beforehand so assume these are entirely non-functional. Attitude was "too bad for you." They denied any responsibility while pushing me to buy a new one or happy replace my engine for a premium. Ended up going to another local place which transported my dead vehicle and installed the very same used engine as the dealer would have, at about 40% less than it would've cost to let it stay with Honda to repair. Honda's repair would cost more than the value of the car. Pretty much destroyed my loyalty to Honda.

Burn oil
My 2014 Honda CRV burns oil at a rate of 3/4 quart per 1000 miles and gets worse as the oils gets lower. I went in for an oil change at 5000 miles (earlier than required) I use synthetic oil. Honda says I should go to every 7000 miles. When I went in for my oil change at Honda the Service mechanic I had very little to no oil. I watched the oil very carefully contacted Honda bought it in to Honda for an oil consumption test 2x and they agree it is burning oil however Honda’s policy is the oil life is ok if it less than a quart per 1000 miles.I spoke to the service Manager he refused to do acknowledge or do anything about it even though the math sugggest I will be empty before each oil change.....he said it is my responsibility to check an fill the oil. So I have to add minimum 3-4 quarts of oil before every oil change.....this is lousy service and this will also me my last Honda

Engine required rebuilt
Have almost all same issues as other honda crv 2014 owners. I got no warnings about oil pressure is low which caused engine damage and have to replace the engine. They don't make engine for this model anymore as they know the engine have a lot of issues so honda service dept says that they have to re-built the engine for about $9000. I am stuck and don't know what to do since it is a lot of money for repairs.Honda should take responsibility and rebuilt my engine. This is my first honda and very bad experience. I will never buy or recommend honda ever in my life unless honda fix my problem on their own expense

Detective parts
I'm a 2014 CRV Honda owner. VTC acutotor had gone bad. Transmission shudder as well between 20/40 mph. Honda should be ashamed of them self. They know that the VTC are defective and have not remedied the issue with the part. So they are replacing defective parts with defective parts. And then Honda offer no reimbursement whatsoever to the customers. Has been a nightmare for me with this car only being 8 years old. Plus I had to replace the A/C as well that cost another $1500. Very disappointed with Honda. This was my 3rd Honda abs will be my last. Would never recommend anyone to buy a Honda.

Does the motor run well or not?
My biggest issue with the vehicle is that there always seems to be something that sounds or does strange thing inside the function of the motor, etc. The vehicle shakes, very badly and rattles in the motor when idle. I have had the brakes not function correctly on random occasions which makes me feel not safe, but upon having it checked out, they cannot find anything wrong with the vehicle or the brakes. Sometimes it feels as though it is trying to downshift at times that it shouldn't, like on a freeway. Again, they cannot find anything wrong.

Honda is not what it used to be.
The leather is extremely thin and starting to crack, even in the backseat where no one sits. The trim around the exterior rear window started to peel off within three months of me purchasing the car. It is frustrating to clean and vacuum the vehicle. The storage compartment between the two front seats has ridges and grooves impossible to clean. I am a 5 foot six woman and the armrests sit way too low. As if a basketball player needed to sit in the front seat. They are extremely uncomfortable and almost useless.

Is not so good for a family car.
The cab is small compared to other SUVs of similar size. There is no air conditioning in the back seat and it takes a very long time for it to feel cool back there if it ever does. My husband cannot drive the car often due to rear facing car seats and him not being able to move the seat back enough because he will hit a car seat. There just is not enough room! It is targeted as a family car but unless all kids are out of car seats and willing to be hot in the backseat, this is not a family friendly car.

Engine Rattle
Honda replaced the VTC under warranty. STILL made the noise. It's not a fix if you replace one faulty part with a new faulty part. 8 years old, less than 50,000 miles and still making noise. Not made like back in the 80's and mid 90's. DO NOT BUY HONDA!! Oh, and yeah, I too use nothing but synthetic and it disappears like a magic trick. I Have never owned a car that ever went through oil. I am very meticulous about ALL my vehicles.

Honda CR-V - not worth the money you pay for it. . .
It is not all I expected from a Honda. Paint already peeling on front bumper. Does not get the fuel mileage I expected at all for a 4 cyl. Already appears to be burning oil which is why I traded in my equinox before. I will probably never buy another Honda. Just not impressed with them for the price they cost. .

Engine
Where to begin. At 84,705 miles the timing chain and hardware had to be replaced as it stretched. Oil consumption is terrible, about 1 quart every1,500 miles. Have had 2 VTC valves replaced to allegedly eliminate the 1 -3 second starter grinding noise. My first and last Honda

Last year to flat tow a Honda!
Lots of plastic inside. Navigation system needs work. Seems very unsafe to use when it's supposed to make things simple. We should be able to just speak to it, not say a word one letter at a time and then have to look at the screen to ensure choice of letter.

Good gas mileage, but cheaply made.
The paint on the buttons in the interior is chipping even though the car is not very old. The car is also not fun to drive, and makes a rattling noise when the a/c is turned on. The Bluetooth also has a bit of a delay when switching songs.

Overall good but have issues with break.
The main issue this model face is the brake. I didn’t need to replace it yet but I feel like it is slow and difficult to brake at times. For people who enjoy fast acceleration, this is probably not the car for you either.
accountCircle Lana F on November 28, 2021
Nice drive but minor inconveniences.
The main negative is that the defrost does not work very well, and the tires are often going low in cold weather. I am not sure if the tires are actually low or if there is something wrong with the tire pressure sensor.

2014 honda cr v review - ok car.
While it has great gas mileage, it does not offer a quiet ride. You feel every bump on the road and feels like air is coming inside. Accelerating to pass someone is not easy due to the 4 cylinder engine.

Thoughts on owning a Honda CR-V
Not a comfortable ride. Laying the back seats down leave a large hump. If make it difficult to transport something that needs to lay flat. 2 infant car seats is a very tight spurrier in the back set.

Hard to like anything about this car. 3 batteries in 5 years. You would think that if Honda was a reputable company, they would have addressed this problem long ago.

Not much power in the car when driving. Plastic details inside start to peel from the sun. Plastic trimming on the outside also begins to look worn out and faded.
