The 2014 Jeep Compass is a compact crossover SUV that became a popular choice in its class, but not without some issues, especially regarding safety and reliability. Common problems include non-deploying airbags, seat belts not latching, and various engine and transmission issues.

Key Points

  • The 2014 Jeep Compass has been recalled two times, including a major recall to address airbags and seat belt pretensioners that may not deploy in a crash.
  • Owners have made nearly 270 complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), with airbags being the leading cause of complaints.
  • One open investigation by the NHTSA covers the degradation of airbag inflator propellant that can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment.
  • Some drivers have noted engine and transmission problems that result in the vehicle stalling, jerking, or hesitating.
  • Jeep’s 2014 Compass has a mediocre overall crash-test record with the NHTSA but received a “Good” overall crashworthiness rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

2014 Jeep Compass’ Malfunctioning Airbags and Flawed Powertrain Top the List of Consumer Complaints Reported to the NHTSA

The 2014 Jeep Compass has nearly 270 complaints, two recalls, and an open investigation with the NHTSA. The two recalls are related to unreliable airbags and seatbelts pretensioners that may not activate in a crash. The one open investigation is due to a desiccated airbag inflator rupture.

Airbag complaints include airbags not deploying in a crash, the airbag light staying constantly illuminated, and the active headrests popping out for no reason. These complaints prompted a recall over disabled seat belt pretensioners and airbags.

An open investigation covering Takata airbag components reveals that high temperature and humidity can lead to the airbag inflator rupturing during deployment and possibly strike occupants with metal shards.

Almost 60 seatbelt complaints at the NHTSA point to the seat belts not latching or retracting during a crash or heavy braking because the defective pretensioners mentioned above prompted a recall.

The Compass’ Engine and Transmission Problems With Shuddering and Stalling Have Been Well Documented Over the Years

Several 2014 Jeep Compass owners have complained about engine and transmission problems, such as jerking, shuddering back and forth, and the engine stalling without warning.

One major problem that led to a recall is the loss of oil pressure. Several 2014 models from the Chrysler group equipped with 2.4L engines were recalled due to abrasive debris in the balance shaft bearings. As a result, these engines may lose engine oil pressure, possibly resulting in an engine stall or engine failure.

In addition to complaints filed with the NHTSA about its faulty engine and transmission, several forums outline problems 2014 Compass drivers have experienced.

“I have owned this Jeep Compass since July 2014, and four times it has lost power and stopped functioning as I was driving between 55 and 65 miles per hour on a very busy five-lane highway,” said one 2014 Compass owner on a Car Problem Zoo.

A driver posted on Car Complaints: “I bought this car in August 2014. In the first month, I had two accidents for jerking and stalls. The car stayed two months in car repair and still driving really crazy.”

Reported Problems and Mixed Crashworthiness Ratings Make the 2014 Compass a Less Compelling Option in Terms of Safety

With all the described issues of airbags and faulty seat belt restraints, the Compass isn’t as attractive as other models regarding safety.

The NHTSA rates the 2014 Jeep Compass with underwhelming crash ratings along with all the problems reported by owner complaints.

For instance, the Compass’s overall front, front driver, and front passenger-side crash tests each got a rating of three out of five stars.

On the other hand, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety granted a “Good” crashworthiness rating to the 2014 Jeep Compass.

Other 2014 models in the compact SUV segment, such as the Honda CR-V and Chevy Equinox perform better in the safety department.

2014 Jeep Compass is Not a Terrible Vehicle but Falls Short in Safety Compared to the Competition

Although Jeep had improved the performance and some issues of the first-generation Compass had when it debuted in 2007, safety concerns and common reliability problems make the 2014 model year of this SUV fall short of the competition.

Other models offer comparable performance and features to the Compass but with better safety ratings and technology, making them better for families looking for a safe, more dependable commuter.

Modern Americans are so spoiled
I'm glad to have my 2014 Jeep Compass. My last vehicle, which I also loved, was a 96 Ford Explorer, with a non working odometer, headlights that did not work so I had to use the "brights" which were extremely dim,, taillights and break lights which constantly blew, windows I literally had to pull up with my fingers, really bad gas mileage, iffy air conditioning, radiator leaks, hard to buckle seat belts, a bent frame, a non working gas gauge, something that caused me to have to pump gas slowly to prevent the pump from constantly stopping, and much more. Still I used it for 2 different jobs which kept me on the road daily, and many vacations and road trips. When the engine finally blew, and I had to purchase, a came across this Compass. One test drive and I signed the papers. I was made aware of the recalls and have experienced myself some of the very minor issues described by others, and I just can't believe howuch more quality of life I have now when compared to the Ford Explorer days. Anybody who has driven a car since the beginning of the "horseless carriage" days would be ecstatic to own or drive this car. Get a little perspective! It's not a covered wagon, for Pete's sake. It's not a Model T or even an 80s station wagon. It's a decent, modern vehicle with many modern comforts! If you make a list of every mass assembled car ever sold, the 2014 Jeep Compass would be near the very top in every category, just like all the other late Model cars of today. The nicest car you can possibly buy today will be tomorrow's piece of trash, to future humans. Not me. I drive a better vehicle than my parents or grandparents did, and so do you!

My Jeep Compass caught Fire!!!
I was buying a Jeep Compass 2014. Just this month of September 2023. I was driving it Began to Smoke. Smoke began-coming into the Vents. I jumped out and noticed it was on Fire under the Engine. The Fire company had to put the Fire out. The Engine kept Smoking so more water was applied. The Police and Firefighters Stated it Smelled Like Oil Burning. Oh course, my insurance company totaled it out. I am yet still waiting over three weeks. For that jeep to be released off of me. I still had to make a car note payment. I requested for the insurance company. To at least tell me what may have started the fire in the first place. No one wants to find out what caused the fire.. They just wrote it off as a total loss.I am without a car. Because the money will go, to the finance company. I’m trying to find out if any recalls. That Engine could catch Fire. Thanks!

Never get a Jeep Compass
I got my 2014 Jeep Compass in 2017 . I had it 8 months and started having problems with it leaking antifreeze . So I had to get a radiator, then had to buy a axle , then 2 thermostats and still having problems . I just had to put a thermostat housing on there . Now I have to get a cam shaft . I almost have it paid off .I'm going to get most of the problems then trade it in .It's not worth it .It's been one problem after another.

If you're buying a Compass, buy it purely for the function and not the form - or you'll end up being disappointed.
My Jeep is a base model, and the seats cause me back pain. It's an all-wheel drive, which is nice, but only a v4. My last car was a v6, and a lot more powerful. The car's speakers also tend to occasionally break on the right side. It's coming close to being warrantee-ending time, which is disappointing. Cars nowadays are made only to last until the warranty ends and then they start breaking.

Low quality 2014 jeep compass.
I have replaced multiple engine parts including the throttle body, it does not drive nicely. I do not like the fact that it is a two wheel drive vehicle. The battery is connected with connection wires that do not stay on all the time. This vehicle does not shift properly and you have to put the pedal to floor on some days in order for it to go the speed limit.

Jeeps have horrible transmissions.
I really wanted a jeep. I got the extended warranty, and I am glad I did because I have had to replace cv axles already. It has 85,000 miles on it and it force shuts down after the transmission light comes on. I cannot drive my jeep over 75 miles an hour without it overheating. The jeep company will not admit the faulty part either.

This is not a family vehicle.
The jeep is not comfortable. It is noisy. I have two kids and not spacious. The vehicle has no power. The gas tank is small. Not very good fuel mileage. The jeep has no amenities. No storage. The jeep is small. The jeep is rough when it is drove. I am tall and my husband is tall and the kids are smashed in the back.

Jeep compass shakes off the map.
From the onset of ownership (54,000 miles ago), the car idles very loudly and shakes. The dealer mechanic says it is a phantom thing he cannot recreate. Clearly they refuse to actually drive the car. The plastic molding on the front passenger seat makes the seat uncomfortable.

A 2014 jeep compass is a piece of junk very uncomfortable.
This jeep has had a lot of issues since we leased it. We've done nothing but put money into this vehicle. If it's not one thing it's another.I'll never purchase another jeep again. The shocks had to be replaced and the sway bars and tires are too large for this vehicle.

Wears tires. Garbage performance. Horrible gas mileage.
Loud cabin noise. Drives worse than a minivan.Takes forever to climb speed. Would not buy again. Out of date Bluetooth does not work is not good for bumpy roads wears tire treads quickly. I do not recommend if you live near unpaved roads. The black trim fades quickly.

Car seat and rust problems.
There is no room for a car seat without someone getting cramped up front. It also is rusting a good bit around the hood and trunk. No scratches to paint or anything. It deff cause of pa weather. But still do not think it should be rusting like that!
accountCircle Marnie T on January 10, 2022
It is just okay. It could be better.
Sometimes it will not start in high humidity. It does not have a lot of power, so it is not for anyone that does a lot of highway driving. The interior is pretty basic, so if you are looking for electronics in a vehicle, this one is not for you.
accountCircle Victoria H on May 2, 2022
Would not buy again personally.
Several problems with electrical of the car. Had to replace radio. Dials for air temp, fan, and where the air is blowing does not work correctly all the time. It is not a daily occurrence but does happen enough to be really annoying.

Compass: Not so great
Terrible gas mileage, plastic on side of seat broke off, loud, blind spots, lag in acceleration, exterior black trim around the windows is badly faded and now a failed CV joint (at 80,000 KM)...terrible mistake buying this!
accountCircle Taylor R on June 30, 2021
Transmission wonky.
The transmission has always been wonky. It always acts like it has issues with staying on when going uphill or re-accelerating after going through a stoplight intersection. That can be a little frightening.

Things to think about when buying a jeep compass.
It is hard to see behind and on the side. Does not ride as smoothly as it should. Not a good highway vehicle because of frequent stops for gas. I also with that my truck was fully loaded.

American-made Trash: Less than what you were expecting.
Problems with poor engine performance, brakes are terrible, and belt is broken. The car makes a lot of squeaking noises when driving. Engine sounds like its about to blow constantly.

Mechanical issues and high cost.
My jeep has had a lot of mechanical issues and the cost has been expensive. It has had a lot of electrical issues and replacing sensors. I really don't think I will buy another jeep.
accountCircle Mark S on July 20, 2021
The main thing is that Jeep really uses cheap parts. Do your research. Jeep makes one of the worst vehicles on the market.
We bought it from Carmax a little over a year ago. It's had continual problems and isn't really a very comfortable ride. We didn't realize that Jeep made such a terrible product.
accountCircle Barbara P on February 21, 2022
Too many issues
I had to replace the wheel bearings before 100,000 miles as well as the throttle body. At just over 100,000 miles I need new back struts and the transmission is starting to slip.

Do not buy this car you will not be happy.
My vehicle is very loud. It has bad gas mileage and drives very uncomfortable. I would like a different car.
accountCircle Elyse Edward on October 21, 2021
Not the best car.
I’ve had already a few problems with it, and it’s only 60,000km. I wouldn’t recommend this car...
accountCircle Marnie T on February 18, 2022
It is not durable. I don't think it will last very long.
It is underpowered. It has an intermittent mechanical issue. Climate control is not durable.
