2015 Chevrolet Cruze has Four Mild Recalls, Few Complaints, and is the Least Problematic First-gen. Model

Jan 23, 2022

Comparing the 2015 Chevrolet Cruze to other model years, problems and recalls are much less common or severe. Sure, it doesn’t have the creature comforts of newer units, but reliability is leaps and bounds ahead of earlier Cruze models.

Key Points

  • The 2015 Chevrolet Cruze has four recalls and 199 registered complaints on the books with the NHTSA. Compared to other Chevy Cruze model years, the 2015 looks to be a gem.
  • None of the four recalls pose an immediate risk to passengers, and very few Cruze units were affected overall. Most stem from poor build quality during manufacturing.
  • Most concerning is the number of engine/powertrain-related complaints, many of which don’t seem to end happily, with owners experiencing stalling, shaking, and overheating.
  • After engine and powertrain, electrical and steering system complaints are most common, followed by various other less affected categories.
  • Ultimately, the 2015 Chevrolet Cruze is a decent car for its age and is the only year from the first-generation with a solid NHTSA track record.

On Paper, the 2015 Chevy Cruze is a Gem, with Fewer Recalls and Complaints than Most Model Years

Comparing the different years of the compact Chevrolet Cruze, the 2015 model sits as the last of the first generation. No, the 2015 Chevy Cruze doesn’t have Apple CarPlay like the updated 2016 model, and the styling is noticeably dated when looking at the two side-by-side.

But for many car owners, creature comforts and aesthetics aren’t as important as the number of issues a vehicle has been reported to have, how severe they are, and how likely.

So, how does the 2015 Chevrolet Cruze compare to other model years in terms of problems, recalls, and overall reliability?

The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued four recalls for the 2015 Chevy Cruze and carries 199 registered complaints. That’s about equal to the redesigned 2016 model, only a few complaints more than the 2017, and just two recalls above the 2018. As for earlier models, the complaint count of the 2014 Cruze nearly triples at 561 and recalls almost double at seven.

Models from 2013, 2012, and 2011 all have similar scores as the 2014.

A Closer Look at the Four Recalls for the 2015 Chevy Cruze Reveals None are Very Common, and Overall Severity is Low

  • Key may be Removed when not in Park, Causing a Possible Rollaway Risk: Issued in July of 2016, this recall affected 8,367 GM vehicles, including the 2015 Chevy Cruze. The problem pertains to the ignition key being removable without the transmission needing to be shifted to Park, causing a potential rollaway risk. The issue was found to be caused by a faulty electronic park lock lever inside the cylinder lock housing, which GM will replace free of charge if necessary.
  • Seatbelt Assembly Bolt not Properly Tightened, Increased Chance of Injury in an Accident: Affecting just 15 2015 Cruze units total, this December 2015 recall was issued for an insufficiently tightened seatbelt bolt that can come loose under heavy load, increasing the chances of injury during an accident. The fix is as simple as tightening the bolts, which you can do yourself or have done at your nearest Chevy service center.
  • Steering Gear not Tightened to Specification, May Result in Loss of Steering: Only 10 2014 and 2015 Chevy Cruze models were involved in this July 2015 recall. In these, the inner tie rod may not be adequately torqued, which can allow it to separate from the steering gear and leave you unable to control your vehicle. GM will replace the steering assembly to rectify this rare issue.
  • Parking Brake Cable Brackets not Sufficiently Fastened, can Pose a Rollaway Hazard: The most widespread recall was issued in February of 2015, affecting 1,733 2015 Cruze models specifically. The issue pertains to parking brake cable brackets that may not be correctly fastened, possibly causing the securing bolts to back out of place. Should this happen, the parking brake may separate from its bracket and will be unable to hold the vehicle in place, creating a rollaway risk. The solution involves Chevy re-tightening the bolts if necessary.

None of the above recalls indicate you need to pull over right away, as none are too common, and none pose an immediate risk to occupants. In comparison, as many as 29,019 Cruze models from 2013 and 2014 struggle with airbags that can rupture during deployment and send metal shrapnel towards occupants, a potentially fatal issue requiring prompt attention.

Is your 2015 Chevrolet Cruze affected by any of these recalls? Run its VIN to find out.

Engine- and Powertrain-related Complaints are the Most Common, Including Stalling, Coolant Leaks, and Overheating

Of the 98 engine- and powertrain-related complaints, many mention the motor cutting out and stalling, often after experiencing shaking/vibrations. There are also numerous reports of engine oil and coolant leaking under the vehicle, often traced back to a bad thermostat housing. Most engine complaints seem to pertain to the 1.4L turbocharged powertrain, and not all have official fixes as of yet, with owners mentioning visiting their mechanics several times before finding a resolution.

Another thing to note is that 2011 to 2014 model year Cruzes with the 1.4L engine are known to have leaking water pumps that can cause the AC to fail and the engine to overheat. Unfortunately, this also appears to be an issue with the 2015 Cruze. What’s worse, GM addressed the issue by extending the warranty to cover affected parts, but only on 2011-2014 models, leaving 2015 Cruze owners out to dry.

Electrical System Complaints Show the 2015 Cruze to Struggle with Random Dash Lights Illuminating and Bad Sensors Causing Shaking and Smoking

After engine-related complaints come those concerning the electrical system. Most commonly, owners mention random dash warnings, like the check engine or tire-pressure monitoring system coming on and going out. The radio, blinkers, and power windows also seem to be involved in this issue, often cutting out for no reason.

Reports also cite the check engine light coming on, followed by the car starting to shake, smoke, sputter, and struggle with reduced performance. One owner states that after scanning the vehicle, it threw a code suggesting the mass-airflow sensor was bad. After replacing it, as well as the air filter, the car continued to sputter, but the warning light went away. Others have yet to find a fix, and instead are hoping GM issues a recall for the problem.

Some 2015 Cruze Owners Report the Steering Wheel Locking in Place, or the Brake Pedal Being Difficult to Press

Scanning through the five pages of steering-related complaints, a number of drivers report that while traveling under 40 mph, the steering wheel locks and can’t be turned. One owner ended up hitting a telephone pole, the airbags deployed, and the front-end caught fire.

GM actually sent out several communications over the steering system, a few of which address reprogramming the power steering control module due to a sticking/slipping feeling in the steering wheel. Another explains how to diagnose a power steering fluid leak. So, while no recall has been issued, it does look like GM is aware of the problem.

Brake-related complaints mostly mention the pedal occasionally requiring extra effort to stop the car, with one driver stating it felt like the power assist was going out. Several other complaints indicate the brakes failing while driving, one ending in a low-speed accident. Upon inspection, techs found the brake master cylinder had failed, causing brake fluid to leak out.

In Terms of Reliability, the 2015 Chevrolet Cruze is the Only First-gen. Model with a Good Record

As shared earlier, the 2015 Chevrolet Cruze has a much better track record with the NHTSA than earlier years and is more in line with second-gen. models from 2016 and newer.

Recalls are few and far between, you just need to ensure the unit in question is not included in any or has been already repaired. While there are a number of concerning complaint patterns, like the engine stalling or the steering wheel locking in place, at the end of the day the 2015 Chevy Cruze is a fine car for its age with fewer issues than most.

118,000 miles with few problems
Bought car new in 2015. At around 75K miles the check engine light came on and the engine ran a little rough. The dealer replaced a few EGR components and everything was covered under warranty. I replaced the front brake pads and rotors at around 65K miles. The rotors developed cracks and car would shake when braking hard coming down mountains (when brakes got hot). New rotors and brake pads work great but are from ebay and I don't know brand. Other than that, no issues until now after my son took it over and has been driving it. He just found that it seems to be overheating and car told him to turn off the AC, which wasn't on. It's been a good car so far and everyone in the family likes it. I got 43 mpg once driving about 500 miles so gas mileage is better than any other small car we've owned to date. Sorry to hear others have had problems but this one is better for us reliability wise than previous two Japanese cars, an Infiniti G20 and a Mitsubishi Mirage, which were both decent cars also.

ABSOLUTELY WORST CAR I'VE OWNED
I've had cars with 200k + miles, 10 + years old act better than my Cruze. In the short period of time I owned my Chevy Cruze, I had more mechanical issues out of it than all of my other vehicles I've ever had combined!!! It used coolant & oil like crazy. Thank God I had a warranty. The coolant leak was "fixed" by my Chevrolet dealer, only for it to begin leaking again 3 months later. Never had an explanation of why it used so much oil. Battery would randomly die. I was told two different things, that it was my battery, then no it was my alternator ??? 30k miles.... Thats pathetic. Don't waste your money. Get a Toyota or Honda. I learned the hard way. I used to praise Chevrolet, but their newer vehicle's motors are just complete garbage.

Horrible Car
I am completely disappointed with this chevy worst choice EVER and I blame the dealership for not giving the Buyer beware heads up. My 19 year old son purchased a 2015 Cruze as his 1st financed car. He has had NOTHING but problem with it and he barely drives. He's had it in your shop multiple times for repairs - last time he was told there was a leak that would be $1500 to fix. We took it to our local shop and they said there is no leak they could find. Also everything that has gone wrong with the car seems to NOT be covered under his warranty conveniently. He has barely even put 3000 miles on this car and has had thousands of dollars in repairs so far. Shame on Chevy for not honoring or valuing their customers and their cars.

2014 / 2015 Purchased New both Cars had TURBO GO OUT AT 125,000 MILES
I have always been a Chevy girl, purchased both 2014 Cruze and a 2015 Cruze both cars has same issue the TURBO traded one in for the other and dang it it happen again just as it rolled over to 125,000 miles. Yeap right after warranty expired costed 2,000 to repair but didn't fix it so I'm out the price of two cars! And 2 grand thanks chevy for selling crappy car! I'm not the only one I have heard multiple people have had same issue. Just plain ridiculous! Very upset customer here!!! Not again Chevy!! Should be on recalls list for this TURBO or root cause of TURBO failure!!! Come on Chevrolet you can do better by your customers !!!

Avg car - common issues with Cruze are not factory recalls.
The Cruze from years 2010-2016? Have issues with various parts that cause mechanical malfunctions and so far these issues are not covered under a recall, and my extended warranty did not cover some of them either. There is enough cars manufactured in this time frame that have several articles and tons of consumer complaints listed on the internet, it leaves me very unhappy that Chevrolet knows there are issues with their product and leave the consumer stuck paying for them out of pocket consistently. It is almost as if I bought a lemon and I am stuck with it.

Worst car of my life
I have had nothing but problems with Chevy vehicles. I have a 2015 Chevy Cruz it had 51,000 miles when I had to have the whole engine replaced. I have had multiple coolant leaks and have had multiple things repaired/replaced since The new engine. Unfortunately I no longer have a warranty but since I got a new engine I have a one year warranty on that. Unfortunately the pieces that keep breaking down are pieces that are attached to the engine so they are not covered. It sucks because I’m upside down on the car so there’s literally nothing I can do

The 2015 is the worst car to get
More people need to complain more about this car it’s a death trap the moment you get something done the car goes downhill one fix will result in 39 things needing to be fixed and it’s hazardous. I’m stuck paying an auto loan for the car and it sucks that I can’t even drive it she was overheating never gave me a warning so at the light antifreeze and oil started to shoot out of my car my pvc cord erupted along with my radiator tube and it’s been downhill since then mechanics are frustrated with this car

This car is absolutely garbage
My 2015 Chev Cruze diesel has been broken down for 4 1/2 months with no parts even built to repair it. It has 31000 kms on it and still on warranty. The intake is completely plugged up. I have not been given any reasons why they can't repair my vehicle I've since been told I need to drive it like I stole it! I somehow doubt it will get the 50 mpg I was told it got when I purchased it. I have driven Chevrolet vehicles all my life but I will never own another one again.

Why the Chevy Cruze is a horrible car!
Car is way to small not allowing four people to sit comfortably. The car also get lots of mechanical issues. I would not recommend buying a Chevy Cruze now or in the future. The seats are way too hot in the summer and the air conditioning has such low settings. I've had the turbo replaced in my car twice. I am not dealing with a bad Cadillac converter. This car also handles horrible when it's winding causing me to get blown all over the highway.

Terrible vehicle
I've had the same issues listed from other comments. I fix one thing only for something else to break. Head gasket blew, manifold cracked in half, the whole coolant system replaced, multiple sensor issues and window motors always fail so try just fall down into thedoor Fram. I owned a 1998 jeep Cherokee that never gave me such issues for the 8 years I owned it. I owned my Cruze for 3 and I have spent well over 5k on it.

Worst car ever
I have a 2017 Chevy Cruze. At 10,000 miles the piston broke they fixed it and then it broke again and they replaced the whole engine prob at like 25-30 thousand miles. Now at 47,000 miles engine light again prob the same problem but now it is not covered under warranty. Trash car they need to recall all of them because this is just a waste of money only 47,000 miles and 3 times.I don't even drive it crazy.

They Aren’t a Good Car to buy.
I have an 2015 LTZ and I have been having trouble with it since I got it. I have the extended warranty on it but It COVERS NOTHING. I Always have to pay out of my pocket.once you fix something then, two months later, something else happen, they might look good, but it is not a good car Under the hood to buy. I would never buy another chevy cruise again in my life.It SHOULD BE A RECALL ON ALL OF THEM.

Chevy Cruze the problems I have had when not owning the car for one year.
Sensors keep going out. Not a good car. Thermostat went out a few months ago and now the o2 sensor and mass air flow went out as well cost me 500 just to fix. Doesn't get the greatest gas mileage as told to many problems with the turbo as well not a good car probably the worker I have ever owned.

Always a coolant problem or the tire sensor
Had this car almost two years and I’ve replaced the radiator pump and four different houses and the coolant reservoir tire sensors twice oil always leaking no matter how many times I take it in . It’s just not worth the money or the worry that your car won’t take you where you need to go

Do not buy a 2015 Chevy Cruze.
Not as reliable as I'd like and not a lot of pickup for passing people. I have already had to replace the turbo housing, intake and the water pump. The car has less than 75, 000 miles. Every time I go to my local Chevy dealer I find new problems with my car. I'll never buy another Chevy car.

2015 Chevrolet Cruze let down.
I was a first time Cruise buyer and really liked it. But after a few weeks it really started to give me problems. Buyer beware. From oil leaks to a burning smell constantly coming in the cab. The vehicles sputters and jerks. Does not deem to be able to be fixed by Chevrolet.

Chevy Cruze reviews dislikes.
Its small, compact. Doesn't handle well in rainy conditions. Takes a little bit to go from 0 to 60. The shifter can be used as automatic transmission or manual transmission. Which is kinda annoying because the gear shifter can be bumped and it will put it into manual.
accountCircle Samantha W on August 19, 2021
Cannot take a cruise with more than one passenger.
Too small, vents are placed directly behind the steering wheel so it takes forever to warm up or cool down. There's A part on the car that defective (has been recalled) but still has to be replaced every so often. Does not cost anything but is a huge inconvenience.

Transmission leak, Engine Leak
Just Sharing, I have a paid off 2015 Cruze LT with 40 k miles, when getting an oil change, told I had major transmission leak and Oil leak in rear of Engine. $2,500 to repair, no recalls and not covered under my 100K warranty. Never buying American again.

I feel like the car is too small for me. I also feel like it's cheaply made. I normally love Chevys but this car just doesn't do it for me. The engine struggles to get up to speed in a timely manner. It feels like I'm driving around in a little clown car

Chevrolet Cruze - excessive maintenance with high mileage.
Car is 5 years old - lots of maintenance problems now. Have spend ~$3k in recent months replacing the thermostat, engine coolant system, etc. Was a great vehicle up to 100k miles, then started to have maintenance and reliability issues with it.
