With over 450 complaints, four recalls, and two open investigations, the 2015 Honda Accord is not without a few faults. Thankfully, Honda has fixed most of the major issues, with the exception of a faulty ignition switch, a common complaint.
Key Points
- Some 2015 CVT-equipped Honda Accords are prone to broken driveshafts due to a faulty lubricant. Additionally, fuel pumps found in the V6 Accord have been recalled for reduced efficiency and failure.
- Honda recalled the Accord’s battery sensor to protect it from coming into contact with water, which can cause an electrical short and possibly a fire.
- Improperly torqued connecting rods affected a mere 137 Honda models, including the 2015 Accord. Thankfully, all have been recalled and fixed.
- There are two open investigations for the Accord, one pertaining to the Airbag Control Unit failing, and the other for a loss of steering while driving. Both issues have yet to be resolved.
- The most common registered complaint about the 2015 Accord is for a faulty ignition switch. The most common symptom of failure is that it takes several attempts to start the vehicle.
Road Grime Can Weaken Driveshaft in Some 2015 Accords Until it Breaks, Causing Loss of Power, Possible Rollover Risk
Some 2014-2015 Honda Accords, specifically those with the four-cylinder engine, may have driveshafts that can break and cause a loss of power. The break occurs due to the driveshaft’s protective coating wearing thin from road salt and other grime. If it breaks while driving, the vehicle can no longer accelerate. However, if it happens when the vehicle is parked, the vehicle can roll away. To fix this recall, Honda inspects both driveshafts and replaces them if necessary.
Defective Fuel Pump Found on 2015 Accords with V6 Engine Can Lead to Engine Stalls, Increasing Chances of an Accident
A faulty fuel pump only affects Accords equipped with the V6 engine, of which, less than one percent of models still need to be fixed. The problem is that fuel contaminants can stick to the pump and cause reduced performance, and eventually, can lead to the fuel pump failing and the engine stalling.
Over 437,000 Honda models were included in this January 2019 recall, including 2015-2017 Accord Sedans. The fix involves Honda updating the firmware and replacing the fuel pump if needed.
2015 Honda Accord’s Shorted Battery Sensor Poses a Possible Fire Hazard, but Most Models are Already Fixed
Affecting over 1.1-million 2013-2016 Accords, this June 2017 Recall pertains to the sensor mounted on top of the battery in non-hybrid models, which can allow moisture inside and cause an electrical short, or less commonly, a vehicle fire. The good news is that all but 280 have been remedied. Honda resolves this issue by replacing the old sensor with a new one that fits properly and keeps moisture out.
Connecting Rods on Some 2015 Accords were Improperly Torqued, Causing Possible Engine Stall
Honda found that during the assembly of several models, including the 2015 Accord, the connecting rod bolts weren’t properly torqued. Luckily, this only affected 137 Honda models total, and all have been remedied. The loose bolts may cause an engine knock or leak oil, leading to permanent engine damage. The only way that Honda could settle this problem was with a full engine replacement.
2015 Accord has a New Open Investigation for Sudden Loss of Steering Control When Driving
An investigation was recently opened in May of 2021 with the claim that the vehicle will veer without the driver giving any input. There have been 107 total complaints on this issue, and it’s estimated to affect all Accords from 2013-2015. However, it’s still too soon to know specifics like what causes it, how to fix it, and whether it only applies to certain trims or powertrains.
Multi-manufacturer Investigation Looms Concerning Airbag Control Unit in Some 2015 Accords
In 2019, the Office of Defects Investigation opened a new investigation concerning over 190 different models from varying manufacturers, including Honda, Toyota, Kia, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, and FCA.
The problem lies in the airbag control unit being compromised due to electrical overstress. When this happens the airbags either fail to deploy or deploy late. Although this is a very serious issue, it’s not very common. Only 15 vehicles from all six manufacturers have been found to have this issue.
Faulty Ignition Switch is 2015 Accord’s Most Common Registered Complaint, with Drivers Reporting Difficulty Starting the Engine
A faulty ignition switch accounted for over a third of all complaints on the NHTSA about the 2015 Accord. Through our research, we found that it’s a widespread issue, and it seems to affect all trims and powertrains. Drivers state that it takes them several attempts to start their vehicle. Furthermore, we didn’t find a common mileage associated with the issue, it seems that it can occur pretty much whenever. Although it’s a common issue, it’s relatively inexpensive to fix, costing owners less than $200 total.
Don’t Write the 2015 Honda Accord Off Just Yet, as Most Problems are Already Resolved
It’s evident the 2015 Accord has a slew of problems through its 450 complaints, four recalls, and two investigations. But the good news is that most of the problems have been fixed. In fact, the only common problem yet to be recalled is the inexpensive ignition switch. Since it’s been recalled enough and the only common problem left is a potentially faulty ignition switch, the 2015 Honda Accord is still a reliable vehicle.
