2015 Hyundai Sonata Problems Cover Unintended Acceleration and Power Steering Failure

The Sonata is a solid daily driver, but the 2015 model year’s reputation is marred by some serious recalls and complaints. It’s difficult for any vehicle to overcome nine recalls, two investigations, and nearly 600 complaints–half of them about the engine.

Key Points

  • To date, the 2015 Hyundai Sonata has nine recalls, two investigations, and 590 complaints lodged with the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA).
  • The most common issue in the 2015 Sonata lies with its faulty throttle control system, which can cause stalling, hesitation, and even unintended acceleration. Currently, there is no fix from Hyundai.
  • The two NHTSA investigations into the 2015 Sonata cover a potentially deadly airbag malfunction and throttle control issues, increasing the chances of harm being caused in an accident, and leaving drivers unable to control their engines.
  • Ultimately, the 2015 Sonata is a bit of a problem child that is best to steer clear of, especially if you have the option of a 2016 or newer model, which have most of the kinks of the ’15 worked out.

2015 Sonata’s Nine Recalls Concern Issues Like Turn Signals that may Activate in the Wrong Direction, and Possible Loss of Power Steering

The NHTSA has issued nine recalls on the 2015 Hyundai Sonata, an excessive number for its age. To make matters worse, these aren’t harmless issues either. Only two of the recalls affect less than 250 vehicles, with many affecting tens or even hundreds of thousands of units.

Arguably the worst recalls deal with turn signals that may activate in the wrong direction, a front passenger seatbelt that may not latch, brake calipers that may fracture, and the possible loss of power steering. The two recalls with the lowest number of impacted units are a left axle that may separate and faulty second-stage airbag inflation. What’s more, some 2015 Sonatas have issues with their parking brake indicator, a sunroof panel that may detach, or an ABS warning lamp that fails to illuminate.

In addition to Cracking Calipers, 2015 Sonatas have Issues with Malfunctioning Parking Brake Indicators

To date, the NHTSA has 59 complaints about the 2015 Sonata’s braking system. A majority describe issues with the recalled electronic parking brake. Generally speaking, owners fail to receive a dash light indicating the brake is engaged. In such a situation, owners may operate the vehicle, unsure whether the parking brake is engaged.

A corroded parking brake switch was found to be the culprit, and like all recalls, the manufacturer will handle the repair free of charge.

Sudden Reduction of Power Steering Assist in Some 2015 Sonatas may Require Increased Steering Effort

Electronic power steering failure is another problem to watch out for with the 2015 model, an issue prompting a recall of 2,138 2015 Sonata units. A poor connection within the vehicle’s wiring harness may result in a reduction of steering assist from the Sonata’s motor-driven power steering system or the inability to move the car’s shifter from the Park position, increasing the chances of an accident occurring.

2015 Hyundai Sonata’s Throttle Control Problems has Led to Lots of Complaints of Stalling, Hesitation, and High Revving

By far, the most pervasive problem in the 2015 Sonata is its powertrain. While the engines and transmissions themselves are fine, the throttle control system is wreaking havoc. Over 300 complaints detail issues with engine hesitation, unintended acceleration, stalling, and wildly fluctuating rpms.

Many reports detail excessive oil consumption and check engine lights as well. One owner mentioned having their ECU reprogrammed to fix the issue only to have the problem return shortly after. Unfortunately, there’s still no factory fix for the throttle system.

Two Open NHTSA Investigations Loom Over 2015 Sonata for its Faulty Throttle Control System and Problematic Airbags

Recalls and complaints are one thing. NHTSA investigations are another. An open investigation is never a good sign. The 2015 Sonata currently has two still being looked into, one of which was launched as recently as November of 2021. The investigations will ultimately determine whether or not Hyundai/Kia is penalized for negligence in regard to the alleged defects.

Perhaps the most serious item under investigation is 2015 Sonata’s throttle control system. This issue has resulted in most of the engine’s complaints and created a major headache for drivers. Owners petitioned the NHTSA to investigate the matter, and their efforts succeeded.

The NHTSA states that the petitioners allege problems such as unintended acceleration, surging, stalling, and loss of motor power, all stemming from the vehicle’s electronic throttle control system. The investigation is still open, but the sheer number of complaints makes the outlook grim for Hyundai.

The first investigation opened into the 2015 Hyundai Sonata covers the airbag system. Certain Sonatas contain airbag control units that are prone to failure, possibly over electrical overstress. The end results are undeployed airbags and faulty seat belt pretensioners posing a safety threat.

Nine Recalls, Two Investigations, and Nearly 600 Complaints Give 2015 Sonata a Shaky Reliability Rating

Sadly, the one thing holding back the 2015 Sonata from being a great car is its unreliable nature. After nine recalls and nearly 600 complaints, it’s hard to recommend the 2015 Sonata. If you had your heart set on a Sonata, fret not. We recommend you grab a 2016 model or newer, which didn’t change much apart from eliminating some of those first-year problems you always find in a new generation.

Worst vehicle ever owned
I have had many Hyundai vehicles and loved them until this car. I have been fighting many issues with this vehicle for years. It has left me stranded many times in very bad circumstances. For 10-30 minutes my car won't even start, then will work fine by the time I can get it to a dealership for repairs that should be covered under warrantee. I'm sent away every time because it's not acting up at that moment when I bring it in to the dealership. After viewing other consumer complaints, my issues are exactly what others describe as the number one complaint; stalling out, engine runs rough and hot once it does start again. Then runs normal by the time I can get it to a dealership. Nothing ever shows up in the computer as having issues so can't repair it. In addition I have also drove to 9 hours on a road trip at night only to find my lights weren't working (electrical issue). It fixed itself before I could get it to the dealership, needless to say ounce again they couldn't help. The lights later acted up again and I was pulled over by an officer for not having my headlights on. He clearly saw the switch was on and they should've been working. Because of that I luckily didn't receive a ticket. This car is very unsafe and is currently at the dealership again, they assured me they'd figure it out. I'm stuck in this vehicle that I can't rely on. I planned upon purchase to pass this car down to my daughter as her first car. I wouldn't want ANYONE to experience the trauma that I have had in this car, especially a new driver. Will never buy Hyundai again or encourage anyone else to.

2015 Hyundai Sonota
I purchased this car for my daughter to go back and forth to college. The car had been doing great until one day she went to pass another car on the highway when the car completely shut down on her and she was so lucky that she didn’t kill her self or anyone else.. Put was lucky to get to the side of the road and come to find out that Hyundai had recall on their faulty motors but due to I purchased this car in 2018 and was not notified about the recall that Hyundai will not stand behind their bad product.. Iwould never even consider buying another Hyundai car or would recommend anyone to purchase a Hyundai.. Hyundai is all great when your buying one of their cars but as soon as something goes wrong with it , and trust me it will and when it does they act like they don’t even know you and your going to be screwed over in every way they can to you..Hyundai doesn’t care for the public safety at all..

Engine failure; continuous repairs
The engine failed at 135000 Km's. No warning lights, no warning- it just stopped while travelling at a high speed down the highway- the oil pump had stopped pumping oil to the top part of the engine. It almost caused an accident which could have killed my daughter. Hyundai refused to cover the cost of the engine- the customer service was the worst I ever experienced- Hyundai Canada just simply ignored me. I had a new engine put in to the car- however, the car is sluggish when accelerating- this is apparently a service bulletin which has been fixed once and will be fixed again this week... In theory. In my 25 years of car ownership this is the worst vehicle I have ever owned- in constant need of repair- every oil change it requires more repairs. Every other vehicle I have owned went to 400, 000 km problem free with only regular maintenance. It was my first Hyundai and my last.

They don't last long
I bought my 2015 Hyundai Sport vehicle in Sept. 2014. I am now having problems with the back camera looking faded blackish in the bottom and right side of the screen. The driver side seat isn't working to put it back and forth. My husband has it back, when I get in it, I try to put it forward and it won't move. Then while he is driving he will randomly try it and it will move. This can be very problematic because I can't reach the pedals. I spoke to the woman at the service dept., and she said it isn't under warranty. I have had other Hyundai vehicles in the past, and have had trouble, but at least it was covered under the warranty. I will NOT, buy another Hyundai vehicle again, and will NOT recommend to anyone. You pay enough money and lucky to get 5 or 6 years from their vehicles.

Bad Engine
I've been having my 2015 Sonata for about two years now. My engine continues to give me problems. First time it completely shut off on while I'm driving in heavy traffic. 2nd time it was during a snow storm while I was with my babies. 3rd time it was shaking. Tried to back it up and the shaking gotten worse. I turned it off just to start it again and nothing. Each time I've taken to my local Hyundai in Omaha, NE there's no issue. When I take it to an auto shop that can't fix it because of engine recall. Prior to having a Sonata I had a Genius and that car's engine starting smoking & my electric system completely turned off on me. I've constantly been having problems with Hyundai vehicles. I wouldn't recommend Hyundai to anyone.

2015 Hyundai Sonata
I bought this car a year ago. Fine for about two weeks. I have over $1200 at the Hyundai service center since then. Not even a year later. Engine is failing. The Hyundai service tech. Stated it need to be replaced and he felt like Hyundai should replace it. They asked for all service records. Which showed that it was serviced regularly. Then denied the claim. Stated that the rods needed to break in the engine before they would do anything about it. So Hyundai does not stand behind their products. To make matters worse they send people back out on the open road knowing that there are dangerous situation with these vehicles. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER HYUNDAI! Beware!

Bad Engines Oil consumption the engine fails
First engine was replaced under warranty at 49k miles for Oil Consumption. Thank you very much! Second engine started burning oil rapidly at the 100k mark on the engine. At 153k mark on second engine, motor failed. Hyundai says they can't do anything because the cause is a lack of compression. Want to laugh now? Bob Baker Hyundai in Carlsbad CA quoted me $10k to $14k for a new engine!! Really?? I am truly saddened by this whole deal not to mention out a lot of money.

Do not buy a Hyundai
I purchased a 2015 Hyundai Sonata Sport, and while it seemed reliable at first, the engine failed at 70,000 miles. Now at 107,000 miles, the transmission is failing. I have owned four Hyundai cars and have had no luck with all. Spend money on a longer-lasting brand and stay away from Hyundais unless you plan on getting a brand new car every three years. Once the warranties expire, Hyundai's have many issues.

Power steering problem
I have a 2015 Hyundai Sonata limited 2.4L had an issue with power steering which intermittently losses the power and I took it to Hyundai dealer and they recalibrated the sensor recently but still I have a same problem after recalibration. It’s really dangerous to steer on slow moving traffic and any turning situation. Please advice what should be done to back on steering to get Norma mode.

Worst Vehicle
I purchased my 2015 a couple years ago. Have always had it serviced at a Hyundai dealership. 2021 started noticing problems with loosing oil. Had cat service but months later was told I needed an engine. Every mechanic that I have talked with all say the same thing….Hyundais are the worst cars when it comes to engine problems. Why want Hyundai address this?

2015 Sonata - 145,000 miles of comfortable, efficient, trouble free driving
Best car I've ever owned and I've had many including Toyotas and Hondas. Besides maintenance the only issue has been a faulty thermostat and a leaking valve cover gasket at 125,000 miles. Car got the Hyundai/Kia white pearl paint peel leprosy but Maaco sanded and painted it for $800 a couple months ago. Looks good as new and redy for another 100,000 miles!

Do not buy Hyundai. Lease or you are stuck with it forever!
The throttle response when I accelerate is terrible. If I floor it to catch speed the car lags and it is put me in dangerous situations that require me to speed up or move. I constantly have to drive it in sport mode and do my own shifting. The resale value is terrible. I have owned it 4 years and I am still 5k upside down on my loan.

Braided electrical issues it is a great car.
There are a lot recalls, and I have had electrical issues with my car since I bought it. My left blinker has never worked, and no matter how many times it gets fixed or replaced it doesn't work. Same with my radio. It shorts out all the time. Even after being looked at mechanics say it's an electrical issue.

Unreliablecar
I wouldn't recommend Hyundai cars to anyone specially sonata. I have sonata and its not a reliable car at all with its weal engines. I am currently having issue with my engine oil burning too fast and I have had other issues as well before and the dealerships wouldn't care about it at all.

Dangerous engine issues
No. 2015 Sonata Engine issues stalling, driving ruff and chugging. My daughter got into an accident due to this issue. Check engine light on after getting it fix at the dealer ecvvt plug was worn out and then 5 months later they claim it was the ecvvt cover almost 600.00 later

Bad car buy will not ever do it again.
All kinds of problems. Does not run good. Stalls. Engine revving for no reason. Does not always start. Horrible on gas. Engine light will not go off. I really dislike this vehicle. I have put so much money into it. I cannot do it with this car anymore. Need a new car.
accountCircle DChaun P on October 14, 2021
The vehicle is low maintenance.
Huge engine recall. Created more problems. Replaced the engine in 2020 due to faulty engine. After the repair I received more problems. The car was purchased in 2015 brand new and before 100k miles it started experiencing problems. This is my first and last hyundai.

Not happy with my falling apart Hyundai sonata.
It has a lot of blind spots it also seems to have many electrical issues. Overall I feel that this car is poorly made and does not have the quality that people expect of Hyundai. This year is known to have problems with a few sensors and that can be a pain to fix.

My 2015 is by far the worst car I ever purchased. I have had numerous mechanical issues and now the paint is peeling off the roof and hood. Hyundai refuses to do anything about is and a local body shop gave me an estimate to paint these two areas of $2800.

Hyundai sonata motor troubles.
I have had it for a few years and the main two problems I have had is the motor and radio. No matter how many times I go get it repaired, the motor cuts out of me. The radio reception is also always terrible as soon as I drive for longer than 5 minutes.

Hesitation/stalling
Bought a 2015 Hyundai sonata with 36,000miles on it in 2021. Ever since I’ve had it I’ve had issues with starting, sometimes when starting it just shakes. Acceleration is slow and hesitant. Lastly it burns so much oil unable to find a cause.
