Nissan’s Altima is a good, spacious sedan that has earned high marks for safety. But with 10 recalls covering problems like doors opening while driving, airbag failure, fuel leaks, and a troublesome CVT, there are some real issues to be aware of.

Key Points

  • Although the 2015 Nissan Altima’s engine is fairly reliable, Nissan’s CVT transmissions are prone to failure due to engine overheating problems.
  • The 2015 Nissan Altima has 10 recalls, with the most severe concerning the driver’s airbag failing to deploy in the event of a crash.
  • The NHTSA has received nearly 700 registered owner complaints about the 2015 Altima, with the most common pertaining to faulty airbags.
  • Owners often mention electrical system issues, including poor headlight visibility, safety sensors failing to work, and the car misfiring and jerking due to faulty spark plugs and coils.
  • The 2015 Nissan Altima has undergone three investigations. Two are still open and involve rupturing airbag inflators and failure of the rear suspension control arm.

CVT Troubles Are Common in the 2015 Altima, With Owners Experiencing Hesitation While Accelerating, Sputtering, and Even Outright Failure

For 2015, the only tranny option offered in the midsize Altima was a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This also happens to be the sedan’s most problematic component and affects four-cylinder and V6 models alike.

CVTs use pulleys and belts instead of gears and are designed to keep the engine within an optimal rpm range. They are more expensive to maintain than a traditional automatic.

Car Complaints, sorting through NHTSA reports, shows that 11 cases of transmission failure have been registered, typically around 61,000 miles. Unfortunately for drivers who are out of warranty, replacement stands at a steep $4,300 average.

The most common symptom that suggests the CVT is going out is hesitation during acceleration. Stalling at takeoff, loud grinding sounds, and sputtering are also on the list.

2015 Nissan Altima’s 10 Recalls Cover Serious Issues With Malfunctioning Airbags, Hoods Popping Open While Driving

The 2015 Nissan Altima has 10 recalls on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Three cover the Altima’s hood latch, where corrosion can prevent it from locking fully when closed. If inadvertently released while driving, this could cause the hood to open fully and cause a crash.

Another recall involves an improperly installed o-ring that may not have been properly sealed during assembly. This can lead to fuel leaking after an accident, creating a potential fire hazard.

The 2015 Nissan Altima has three additional recalls over faulty airbag software that may result in airbags failing to deploy in a colission.

Another recall resolves front brake caliper bolts that may not have been sufficiently tightened during production.

Majority of 2015 Altima’s 700 Owner Complaints Relate to Problematic CVT and Rupturing Airbag Inflators, Both Serious Concerns

700 owner complaints have been registered with the NHTSA against the 2015 Altima, an above-average number for a sedan of its age. Some of the more concerning consumer complaints involve the CVT, as well as unreliable Takata airbags, which affected millions of vehicles across multiple automakers.

Other common issues involve exterior lighting and powertrain problems. Reportedly, the low-beam headlights on the 2015 Nissan Altima are “dangerous when driven at night,” according to one complaint. “[I] can hardly see 10 feet in front of the car,” shares the owner.

Similar experiences are echoed time and again. One owner even mentions that their local dealer suggested they replace the entire headlight assemblies.

A high number of consumer complaints also address the powertrain and testy CVT.

A 2015 Nissan Altima owner reported to the NHTSA that his transmission went out with 103,000 miles on the odometer. The dealership quoted him $5,500 for a new transmission because of CVT failure.

Another 2015 Altima said, “Nissan refused to pay for a $5,221 transmission replacement. They should have replaced it due to their crappy CVT design.”

Three Investigations Were Launched Against the 2015 Altima, Including Two Still Open, Dealing With Dangerous Takata-related Rupturing Airbags

In addition to 10 recalls and nearly 700 owner complaints, the 2015 Nissan Altima has three NHTSA investigations, and two of them are still active. The most serious of the open investigations concerns the infamous Takata airbag inflators.

After prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity, the airbag inflators can degrade and eventually rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants.

The other two recalls both deal with a design flaw in the rear suspension control arm that causes it to fail. Although the unit was replaced with a new design, the investigations remain open.

Despite the 2015 Nissan Altima’s Perfect Five-star Safety Rating, the Sedan Has Some Serious Problems

Despite its perfect five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, the 2015 Nissan Altima ranks poorly when it comes to reliability. And the reason is Nissan’s use of the CVT, which is well-known for having serious issues.

Additionally, the Altima has had several recalls and owner complaints regarding notable airbag issues.

The Nissan Altima, however, has had some good years, and it is a spacious vehicle with a fairly decent engine. However, its reliability issues in other areas of the car, such as airbags, should lead potential buyers to consider other options in the sedan family.

Transmission Sucks
My Altima has 76,000 miles on it and I got the news today I’m spending $6200 on a new transmission. Things to watch for. RPM’s increase but the speed doesn’t, and when you are at a stop or slow down there is either a pause when you accelerate, it barely creeps forward if I moves at all. I will never buy another Nissan vehicle again. After everything I’ve read this has been an ongoing issue for years and they’ve not corrected the problem.

2015 Nissan Altima 2.5S issues
My 2015 Altima seems to be cheaply made. The middle console isn't very stable, the sun visors has issues, the digital mileage left until empty wouldn't be correct all of the time. The CVT transmission has more issues than what it's worth. Engine runs ok, haven't had a problem with that. A/C had issues with vent flow, the system would running full go, but little air flow coming out of the vents (even after changing filters).

A joyous fuel efficient basic sports vehicle.
Issues faced with owning the 2015 Nissan Altima come with the fact that the specific model had an annoying amount of factory recalls. Not only were the factor recalls an issue but there was also the fact that the vehicle was designed to specifically require Nissan brand parts such as breaks. When replacing the breaks, if you did not use the specific brand, the vehicle would squeal when applying pressure to the breaks.

Some issues with the vehicle.
While I started off loving this car, it is already had quite a few problems for being so young. Shortly after buying it, I had to take it in for a new transmission. Thankfully it was under warranty so I didn't have to pay to fix it. I also have almost constant tire pressure problems since buying the car. Also recently my air/heating unit went out resulting in a $900 fix. I do not feel like this car has aged well.

NeverNissan Again
Never ever buy Nissan Motor vehicle again. Their transmission is sure to breakdown in less than 100 K miles. Their warranty is another drama to rip off customer. I won Nissan2015 bought brandnew from showroom. I also own Toyota Camry2015. I bought at 37 K miles. It is still drive like new but Nissan transmission broke and now time to junk it. I can still sell my Toyota with good price now.

Decent for the price: looking for something reliable and on the cheaper side?
This is my second Nissan Altima. The first one blew a head gasket, it was used to be fair. The second one was brand new. It handles decently in the snow with the right tires. My brakes I find have to be replaced quite often, and there has been a check engine light on for a while. I cannot seem to get an accurate idea of why the light is on.

2015 nissan altima s transmission and windows
My transmission on the car was making loud noises and started stalling. Sometimes I would try to start the car and nothing would come on. Sometimes it wouldn't even start. The windows don't come down anymore. This was a bad way to lose money. The transmission will cost more than 5,000 with labor and oils.
accountCircle Laura V on June 19, 2021
I loved that the car was a push to start car.
I have always been told that Nissans are very good reliable cars. So I leased one I am always having problems with oil pressure I have gotten my oil changed more than usual. My spark plugs go out so fast and one on my cylinders needed to be changed and I need a new battery all in the span of 2 years!

A/C Issues That Are Difficult To Fix
I have had a really good experience with this car. It has only been a problem when I got the ac fixed and it was not installed correctly. Since this issue has occurred, I cannot push the ac unit back into my car and it makes it look very unappealing. Other than that it has been a pretty decent car.

2015 Nissan Altima - good car overall, good gas mileage, reliable.
We have had it up to 56, but we were driving slow on side road! :-) transmission keeps leaking, has many recalls on tranny, hood latch, window/door issues, I cannot remember what else, I am sure we have paperwork to show though it is also hard to see out of side window to change lanes.

Transmission issue
I purchase this vehicle couple years ago and now at 72k is giving me transmission issue, took it to the dealer and they told me the warranty doesn’t cover cuz I was over the time limit that they extend to 84 months. Can some some one show me where the warranty extend to 120k please?

My review of my Nissan Altima.
Transmission went out, had to replace after the vehicle replaced. I have owned the vehicle. 4 years, it was purchase used. I paid close to $3000 to get a new transmission, while still paying the note for the car. I would recommend the car but keep the maintenance up to date.

The jumping Altima after a long day.
The vehicle has not had many problems since I purchased it brand new. However, when running for a while I have trouble with accelerating. The car usually delays and then it will jump after pressing on the gas. It has been happening since I purchased the vehicle.
accountCircle Lily M on September 5, 2021
It goes really fast and works well
Sometimes burns a lot of gas and I'm constantly having to fill up. Starting and turning off the car it sometimes shakes or has trouble starting. It is a nice and reliable car just sometimes frustrating. It has a nice tech system with a touchscreen up front.

This will be my last Nissan
I’ve had 6 Nissan cars, 4 of which were Altimas. My current 2015 Altima needs brakes constantly but now, with 102,000 miles, I need a new transmission. I was quoted over $6000 to replace the transmission at the dealership I purchased it from. Yikes.

2015 Altima issues- avoid!
I have owned a few Nissan's and was a happy camper until the 2015 Altima. I have had many issues for only 85k miles. The rotors have been changed out a few times, recalls, and bad brakes. Overall I will not be purchasing an Altima again

Transmission problems.
I have A 2015 Altima with 110,000 miles. Now I am having transmission problems. Dealer quoted me $7000.00 to repair it. With how many people that are having this problem. Nissan should replace the inferior transmission.
accountCircle Paden H on August 16, 2021
Spacious vehicle with some mechanical issues.
Car has less than 100k miles on it. I have had to replace both hub assemblies. The car makes a rattling noise at 2,000 rpms. The driver's side mirror is positioned such that you can constantly hear air passing over it.
accountCircle Jaclyn M on August 26, 2021
The CVT transmission is the only thing that individual’s should research.
The biggest issue we had with my 2015 Nissan is that the transmission went at 90k. This issue cost us $3500 fix. Upon reading more about this, it seems that the CVT transmissions are known to have issues.
accountCircle Jeanette T on July 1, 2021
Good vehicle but issues with the ac.
The only problem I have experienced is with the a/c. The a/c blows high at all times and will not turn off. It does however, work. Other than that we have had no other issues with the vehicle.
accountCircle Mark C on February 15, 2022
Disappointed. It is a dependable car overall.
A/c does not get cold enough, heater when in auto goes to your feet and if you change to vents it shuts off auto, brakes get loud when backing up, had new brakes installed made things worse
accountCircle Cha K on April 5, 2022
Transmission problems, think carefully.
Transmission has been a problem for a while and Nissan refuse to put a recall out.So.Of course I had to pay out. Of pocket. I got it fixed and it still feels like it does not pull right.
accountCircle Tanesha Ray on September 4, 2023
Low beam lights very low.
The low beam lights on my 2015 Nissan altima are very low I'm scared to drive when the sun goes down.. You can't even see 10-15 ahead. Replaced the lights and still no change..
accountCircle Hea C on June 25, 2021
Dud- would not buy again.
It is had transmission issues. It is had alternator issues. It has a loud interior when on the highway. Key fob constantly has connectivity issues.
accountCircle Mongo G on April 7, 2022
Overall ok but speaker issues.
Rear speakers had and still have issues. Not sure if electrical or not. Rest of the car is ok.

Comfortable and decent mpg.
Unfortunately, I have recurring issues with the a/c system.
