When your 2016 Chevrolet Silverado is due for an oil change, using the correct oil is a must. So is understanding its oil capacity.

The Silverado dates back to 1999, known as the C/K before that. It’s now one of the best selling trucks on the planet, one that will last a long time if it’s cared for properly.

What is the oil type and capacity recommended for a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

The basic answer is that this truck can hold eight quarts of oil, and a Dexos 1 Standard Synthetic oil is recommended.

Learn more about the importance of oil type in your 2016 Silverado, along with some additional details as you prepare for your truck’s next oil change.

The Importance of Using the Right Oil in a 2016 Silverado

Anytime a new engine is built, its designers spend a lot of time testing the engine with different types of oil to determine which delivers the best overall performance. The 2016 Silverado is no exception here.

Not only can using the wrong oil in your truck cause its fuel economy to deteriorate, but you may also find that your truck’s engine runs roughly or loudly when you use the wrong oil.

Fortunately, if you take your Silverado to a licensed Chevrolet dealer for your oil changes and other preventative maintenance, you can rest assured that these professionals will know what type of oil your truck needs.

Still, what if you prefer to change your own oil? Your best bet will be to check your truck’s manufacturer owner’s manual for the exact information on the recommended oil type and capacity.

This can also vary based on the truck’s specific engine.

Every 2016 Silverado has an oil capacity of eight quarts. Furthermore, a Dexos 1 Standard Synthetic oil with a viscosity of SAE 0W-20 is generally recommended. Synthetic oils tend to cost more than conventional oils but will ensure better performance.

If your truck has high mileage, however, you may want to consider an oil specifically formulated for high-mileage engines. These oil types can help protect your truck’s engine against sludge buildup that can cause problems down the road.

109,000miles
My 2016 Chevy 1500 LT 4.3 L V6. Has 100,009+ miles and I’ve never had an issue with it. Just changed the alternator thermostat water pump belt, and coolant temperature sensor. Preventative maintenance really pays off. Next is a full coolant and transmission flush
