Honda HR-V’s Best and Worst Years Include 2016’s Slipping Transmission Issues, and 2021’s Flawless Restyle

While the small crossover provides a practical solution for the commuter, the 2016 model comes with a flurry of problems. The issues include a faulty start button, bad CVT, and brakes that may fail. The best year to consider is the 2021 model, which outgrew the earlier design flaws.

Key Points

  • With only eight model years on the road, the Honda HR-V gives drivers an intelligent design, good fuel economy, and a solid reputation.
  • The worst year for the Honda HR-V is 2016. Faulty programming for the transmission and a bad switch for the ignition resulted in extensive service campaigns and extended warranties.
  • The flaws found in the early model also extend up to the 2020 model year, even though driver complaints continue to drop year after year.
  • The 2021 Honda HR-V wins the award for the best year with no recalls, minimal reported problems, and is free of the earlier design flaws.
  • Even the worst years of the small SUV stay in Top 10 lists for dependable and affordable compact cars.

The Honda HR-V is a Smart Small SUV Built for the Practically Minded with a 59 cu. ft. Flexible Cargo Area

If you are in search of a smaller SUV that features loads of smart design in a ride built for the practical commuter, the Honda HR-V may be just right for you. It first appeared on U.S. lots in 2015 and has enjoyed a growing fan base over the years.

The 141-horsepower four-cylinder engine and continuously variable transmission do not deliver an athletic or quiet ride. Still, the interior looks and feels more upscale compared to other rides in the segment.

Best of all, its second-row Magic Seat adds flexibility to its maximum 59 cu. ft. of cargo space. Flip up the back seat to fit in taller items and recline the front passenger for longer ones.

Currently, there is just the first generation available to potential owners and the car consistently earns a Top 10 spot on the J.D. Power Small SUV list. But not every year of the compact car is equal to the next.

Badly Programmed CVT and Faulty Brake Caliper Coatings Earn 2016 Honda HR-V a Worst Year Award

The 2016 Honda HR-V stands out as the debut for the model, as well as the worst of its eight production years including 2022.

Even so, its two recalls and 140 complaints lodged with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration don’t indicate that this is a true lemon.

Both recalls are relatively minor. One applies to just 11,000 vehicles and requires the installation of a new tire information placard.

The other refers to bad coatings on the rear brake calipers and includes the 2017, 2018, and 2019 model years.

The coating permits too much heat to transfer into the brake fluid, resulting in air bubbles and poor brake performance. A new coating is applied, and the brakes are bled to restore function.

The problems that earn the 2016 Honda HR-V the badge of the worst year include a slipping continuously variable transmission and the smart key push-button start that doesn’t always work.

Owners started to report powertrain issues such as a total loss of power at highway speeds, a failure to accelerate, a wildly revving engine, and a generally noisy transmission. At the service center, they found the fill cap for the transmission fluid popped off.

In some cases, metal filings appeared during a fluid change. Finally, others experienced premature CVT belt failures.

Honda determined that faulty programming for the transmission control unit stood at the base of the problems.

The automaker issued a service bulletin to fix the problem. It also extended the warranty up to 150,000 miles or seven years in the 2016 to 2020 Honda HR-V. They expect the bad programming to negatively affect the durability of the CVT.

The manufacturer also extended the warranty for the smart key start/stop ignition switch up to nine years or 125,000 miles. Drivers reported that the button did not always close the ignition circuit. The service campaign to replace faulty switches applies to the 2016 to 2018 model years.

Poor Headlights and Uncomfortable Seats Add to the Problems

While the 2016 Honda HR-V earned a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety scored its headlights as Poor. Both low and high beams on the halogen reflector-type lamps only illuminate half the suggested range. The option for an improved headlight is not offered until the 2019 model year.

Shorter drivers find that the seats are extremely uncomfortable. The headrest pushes their head forward. Complaints of back pain, neck pain, and migraines are associated with the seat comments.

The 2016 Honda HR-V also scores as the worst year simply due to the higher number of complaints it accumulated. The problem reports drop by more than half in 2017. Even fewer complaints appear in 2018 and 2019. Meanwhile, sales numbers climbed. Honda sorted out some manufacturing problems over the years.

2021 Honda HR-V-Honda

2021 Honda HR-V Scores the Best Year Title with Minimal Issues and None of the Earlier Problems

When you want to opt for the most reliable Honda HR-V, consider the 2021 model year. It sold over 137,000 units–the most of any year–and has no recalls and only five complaints at the NHTSA. It maintains its five-star overall safety rating, too.

The 2021 Honda HR-V represents the first year that is not included in any of the earlier service campaigns for the CVT, bad brake calipers, or sticking start switch. A refresh in 2019 means that headlights are also available that the IIHS finds Acceptable.

It offered buyers the option of adding autonomous emergency braking and it supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The 2021 did lose the Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS–which was granted to the 2020 model–because a new side-impact test lowered its final score. The poor rating was not due to any change in the car’s structure or safety systems.

So, while fans of the small SUV wait for the next generation of the Honda HR-V to arrive in 2023, the 2021 remains the best year for now.

Despite Some Serious Concerns for Early Years, Every Honda HR-V can be Considered a Smart Choice

Ultimately, if the Honda HR-V is on your shortlist, it is generally a good choice for a practical small SUV. Even the more problematic 2016 model year gathered minimal complaints. Still, Honda is keeping a close eye on the CVT and faulty start button.

But if you want to avoid those new model issues, the 2021 Honda HR-V gives you all the fuel economy, cargo capacity, and function you want without the headaches.

Review of 2018 Honda HR V
I have been very pleased with the H-RV. I was previously driving an Accord, and there were definitely differences to get used to. Both vehicles were purchased as base models, but there are some upgrades in the Accord that are not available in the HRV. It makes sense, since I believe the Accord is more expensive and more popular, but a few things, like the dual temperature control and the placement of the radio knobs would be a nice addition. Overall, I would definitely recommend it for someone who does not need a larger SUV but wants something a little higher than a sedan.

Never Buying Honda Again
2016 Honda HRV. We were driving along on the highway when all of a sudden experienced loss of power and all the dash warning lights came on. Speed would not accelerate past 40mph. We were stranded in the desert. Towed car to Honda dealership 100 miles away. Huge metal chunks sticking to transmission plug. CVT is toast. Just found out that the extended warranty expired two months ago. We are still paying off this car!!! I used to be a Honda die hard, but now I feel burned by them and will never buy Honda again.

2018 HR-V is a great vehicle, but some frustrating quirks
It is a pretty basic vehicle. I knew this when I purchased it, and I am perfectly content with that, but some of the features seem somewhat pointless... I would much rather have blind spot indicators than the camera that turns on when I put my right blinker on. The center console is tiny, there is no place for sunglasses, there is an unnecessary HDMI port. Just things like that really. I like the size, the allocation of space, the way it rides, etc. But it does have some quirks.

Good little SUV
I have owned my HRV 2017 for a little less than a year. In the last 2 years I have been pleased with it. It did not have real power going up steep hills. I figured it was because it's 4 cylinder. How ever today notice slipping I'm the transmission and now I need to see someone for my transmission, maybe nothing maybe a big bill idk yet. If it is the transmission one would hope with only 98k that they would replace it for a faulty transmission, being Ionly had it for a few years.

2020 Honda hr-v: reliable, adjustable, comfortable.
My vehicle is very comfortable and reliable. The back seats go down to make a very large trunk space if needed. The vehicle does not cost very much to fill up but the tank is small so it does run out of gas more quickly than my past vehicle did. I love the organization of the adjustable cup holders in the front seats but would prefer cup holders in the back as well. Overall, I really like my vehicle and it drives very smoothly.

Transmission issue - Honda HR-V 2020
I was so disappointed when my vehicle suddenly stopped in the middle of the road. My vehicle is now on its 71,000km and it is now with me for 2 and a half years. The problem is with transmission, and unfortunately the parts is not available and I have to wait for 15-20 days to get it fixed. I hope Honda will consider this issue and I can get longer than 5 years warranty on this as this is a very serious problem.

2018 HR-V Bluetooth issues
First, I LOVE the vehicle, the size, the mpg’s...but, unfortunately the Bluetooth sounds like you’re outside, gargled to the person you’re talking to. Was told it was my phone, bought a new phone, same issue. Honda has not helped at all. 2 months old and I can’t use my phone. Please Honda, fix it! Before buying, google the issue and decide if you’re willing to forgo hands free calling.

Great subcompact SUV for first time SUV owners -2020 model
I am so glad I chose this car! It is a sub-compact SUV with great gas mileage and comfortability. It is spacious enough for small road trips or hauling luggage and other things with an open trunk space, as well as back seats that let down. The air conditioner is a little loud, but not a deal breaker for me. Love the touch screen and apple play, making my music and navigation easily accessible.

My New 2019 Honda - just a few things that make it a good car
I love the size.,the overall look of the car and the general feel when I drive. I like that it is a little bit higher than a sedan. The camera for backing up is great. Just got it - so far reliable and no problems. Fun to drive and gets good gas mileage. Back seat is pretty roomy and for a crossover has a good amount of space to carry items. I like that there is visibility when turning right.

2017 HR-V: Honda needs to remake this subcompact SUV
The four cylinder engine in the HR-V is lacking compared to the CR-V. Performance is standard with any Honda which is to say you won't be at dealership with issues. It's an overall reliable car although I have experienced more issues with it than my previous CR-V. Comfort is pretty good if you upgrade features and the features are an improvement but lack versus other car manufacturers.

2020 Honda hr-v highlights/review.
I really enjoy that it is big enough for a few people to fit comfortably but that it is also not too big because it is just me and my boyfriend so we do not need lots of space. It has all wheel drive which is a must for the winters. I have been enjoying the Bluetooth capabilities and just the whole display in general I think it is very organized.

2017 Honda HRV- spacious 4 door smooth riding SUV
Very spacious for a smaller SUV. Great on gas. Pick up isn't great but you can expect that in a little SUV. The year/model that I have doesn't offer XM radio which I was a little disappointed about but many other features for music. Had an issue with my radiator a 1.5 after having it but other than that I can't complain. Love this car

Disappointing 2016 HR-V
I am very dissatisfied with the mechanical aspect of the vehicle. I have a substantial commute (150 miles daily) so the miles accumulated quickly. At 110,000 my transmission went out. I had purchased an extended warranty so it was covered. However, 40000 miles later the transmission went out again

Not the car that I’m proud of or even to recommend
Got a 2016 HRV from Pickering Honda in which my warranty will expire this Nov. So many problems since day one , many repair visits , low quality in every piece seems to be a toy car, sad can’t drive it to avoid major break downs only have 27k on it .. Pls stay away of this car.. Shame on Honda

Another great Honda.......I've owned several.
119,000 miles. Only issue was the modu÷le that recognizes the key fob to unlock the doors. Just changed the original factory front brake pads at 104,000 miles and the pads were still good for another 10,000. The rear pads are still ok. No other issues........just simply another great Honda.

Love this car! 2020 Hrvs are amazing!
I love this car! It is the perfect transition into a bigger SUV. I used to only drive sedans. The hrv has some amazing features, including a right blinker camera, amazing gas mileage, and heated seats! My model also has a sunroof! Even my husband loves to drive this car!

Impressed with the 2020 hr-v sport.
Overall it is a great car. Love the handling and gas mileage. Apple CarPlay is fantastic. Ac is powerful and quickly cools the car down even on hot days. Additionally, running the ac does not seem to adversely affect gas mileage which is a huge bonus.

Semi in depth review of the 2020 honda hrv.
I bought my car in june 2020. I haven't faced any problems with it so far but it has so many features that I like: a spacious interior, easy handling, and great fuel economy. It can sit 5 people and the horsepower is about 141. I really love this suv.

I do not love the 2016 Honda HR-V, I would like a CR-V more.
I do not like how the side mirrors stay fogged in rainy weather, I often have to roll down the window and wipe the mirrors. I have never had to do that in a car. Also, the back trunk door sticks, and I do not like how vents on the passenger side.
accountCircle Cindy B on August 16, 2021
Don't buy 2016 unless you have to.
It's too low to the ground and I get blinded by headlights at night. Before owning it for a year, I had to replace the AC condenser unit. I have issues with the tire pressure monitoring system.

The 2016 HRV smaller engine has no pickup.
The hrv has a smaller engine, which means no pickup when trying to merge with traffic or passing. High front end means it's difficult to turn onto a downward sloping road.

Honda HRV 2016 not a good family car
Its air system doesn't work well! No air circulation to the back seats. Seats are uncomfortable! Head rests are uncomfortable too.

Ok car. Honda HR-V ex AWD 2016.
No lock on glove box and no door controls on passenger side. Aha app is a joke. Must use a HDMI cable for some things to work.

2016 Honda-hrv review information.
My breaks are extremely rusted and the car is only five years old. The interior is nice, but gets really dusty quickly.
