The Kia Optima is a reasonably priced midsize sedan. But the 2016 model year received four recalls, two investigations, and several complaints about problems ranging from transmission shudders and fluid leaks, to airbag issues and faulty window regulators.
Key Points
- The 2016 Kia Optima has four recalls and two investigations issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
- Two recalls deal with malfunctioning driver-side airbag inflators, and the other two addressed a high-pressure fuel line leak and possible front driveshaft fracture.
- Out of the 239 registered complaints, several consumers mention excessive oil-burning, and engine knocking, while others report a potential fire risk and engine seizure.
- Other problems include unintended acceleration, transmission shudders, fluid leaks, airbag issues, and faulty window regulators.
- At the end of the day, the 2016 Kia Optima’s biggest problems are either currently under investigation, or already have a fix, making it a decent bet overall.
Owners Report 2016 Kia Optima having Problems with Heavy Oil Consumption, Engine Failure, and a Fire Risk, Leading to a Recall
The 2016 Kia Optima has quite a lot of engine issues. Out of the 239 complaints, 87 are registered against the sedan’s four-cylinder GDI engines, more specifically, the turbocharged Theta II. Per the NHTSA, complaints about excessive oil consumption and engine knocking sounds are common. Owners report heavy oil consumption, about a quart every 1,000 miles. The cause happens to be its faulty piston rings that fail prematurely. Drivers have faced oil burning issues from as early as 30,000 miles.
Reports of the engine seizing and failing unexpectedly have also been registered. Per the complainants, the car either completely stalls or goes into limp mode. This highlights yet another drawback of the GDI engines. Technicians have found these engines to house a faulty fuel injector system. According to them, excess fuel floods the cylinder causing it to throw a check engine light and force the car into limp mode.
Other engine-related problems include overheating and excessive vibrations. More concerning though, would be the possible fire risk. A few unlucky owners saw their Optima burst into flames. Thankfully, the cars involved were parked, and nobody got injured. The cause is unknown, but Kia has a recall against what they think might be the reason. The Optima’s high-pressure fuel pipe that connects to the fuel pump outlet may have been damaged. This could cause a fuel leak and if near an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire. Per the NHTSA, the recall involves roughly 75,600 cars.
2016 Kia Optima Powertrain Issues include Unintended Acceleration, Shaky Transmission, and a Front Driveshaft Recall
Powertrain issues aren’t uncommon either. The majority of owners experienced the transmission juddering and exhibiting choppy gear shifts. Problems like transmission failure and fluid leaks have also been registered. Other concerns include abnormal noise and hesitation to accelerate after depressing the throttle pedal.
This led to the NHTSA initiating an investigation upon receiving several complaints. It delves into the Kia Optima’s vehicle speed control issues, which include uncommanded acceleration, runaway throttle conditions, surging, stalling, and loss of motive power. The NHTSA found the cause to be a defective electronic throttle control system. The investigation is open and includes 52 affected products.
Problems with the front axle are also quite common on Optimas equipped with the 2.4L engine. If the driveshaft cracks and separates from the vehicle, it will not be able to move forward. Additionally, if the parking brake is not applied on exiting the vehicle, it may roll away. This resulted in Kia issuing a recall.
Faulty Window Regulator and Airbag Inflator Issues Plague 2016 Kia Optima
The Kia Optima’s electrical problems include faulty headlights and window actuators. Many owners experienced the windows getting stuck in either up or down position. In some cases, the windows will fall straight into the door, unable to be rolled up again. The problem has been diagnosed to be a faulty window regulator. Kia has addressed the issue and released a technical service bulletin. At $550 per window, the fix is quite expensive and isn’t covered by the dealership, leaving owners frustrated.
Models fitted with the automatic headlamps seem to have their lights going out unexpectedly. This is quite a safety issue, and few drivers have raised their concerns as to why this is happening. Kia hasn’t yet acknowledged the problem as the issue is fairly uncommon, and there aren’t that many complaints reported.
Cases of airbags not deploying have been reported as well. Per the NHTSA, there are two recalls on record. The first recall addresses the driver-side airbag inflator which could underinflate due to an improperly installed end seal. Another recall was introduced to replace the driver-side airbag module as the second stage wouldn’t deploy.
The NHTSA has also opened an investigation that goes into the car’s airbag control unit (ACU). The issue involves a faulty electronic component inside the ACU that monitors signals from crash sensors to determine whether airbag deployment is required. Only if the conditions are met will the system deploy the appropriate airbags.
Despite Complaints, the 2016 Kia Optima is Still a Recommended Buy
Besides the fire risk and potential airbag failure, the rest of the problems are fairly minor. The engine’s oil-burning issue is worth keeping in mind, as are the transmission problems. However, Kia has addressed the issues with recalls and service bulletins. Despite the complaints, we’d still recommend a used Kia Optima. It’s a feature-rich mid-size sedan with an affordable price tag. So, if you are looking to buy a 2016 Optima, make sure to have a mechanic look at it. Also, check whether it’s part of the recall and see if the necessary components are replaced.
