More than half of the 2016 Nissan Rogue’s consumer complaints registered with the NHTSA are for CVT gearbox issues, faulty heater systems, and engine stalling. Plus, the compact SUV’s six recalls include a recent one over corrosion of electrical components.
Key Points
- The 2016 Nissan Rogue has six recalls and over 270 complaints as per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
- Two of the NHTSA recalls for the 2016 Rogue are for non-deployment of airbags due to a faulty control unit misclassifying the front passenger seat as empty even when occupied.
- The remaining recalls are for problems with the corrosion of electrical components, and weak weld points on the front and rear seat assembly.
- Most of the NHTSA-registered complaints are for powertrain and electrical problems that include malfunctioning of the gearbox and faulty safety features like blind-spot monitoring.
- Many owners also complain of weak suspension and dead steering issues. The suspension issue is mostly due to a bad strut-bearing assembly, and dead steering is due to power steering failure.
2016 Nissan Rogue has Six Recalls over Issues with Airbags not Deploying, Improperly Welded Seats, and Safety Hazards Due to Corrosion
As per the NHTSA, two of the 2016 Nissan Rogue recalls are for non-deployment of airbags. This is due to a software issue involving the occupant classification system. It wrongly classifies the occupancy of the front passenger seat. This, in turn, causes the passenger front airbag to be turned off and not deploy in a crash.
Plus, there are two recalls for poorly welded seats, including one for the front passenger seat frame.
The other recall is for the recliner joints of the seats, which may have improper welds that can cause seats to deform or crack. Vehicles with these defects also don’t meet the performance requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
Corrosion is also a problem, and the focus of a recall over a rear liftgate that may fall if it is corroded. Corrosion of one or both of the rear liftgate support bars could cause a sudden release of pressure. If this occurs, the support bars may break off, increasing the risk of injury.
The latest 2016 Nissan Rogue recall is for corroding electrical connectors located under the dashboard. This is due to seeping moisture and salt content from the driver’s side footwell. The issue could lead to battery drainage, power window failure, and even fire hazards.
More than Half of NHTSA-registered Complaints for the 2016 Rogue are for CVT Gearbox Issues, Faulty Air-conditioners, and Randomly Cracking Sunroofs
Most of the powertrain issues that owners of the 2016 Nissan Rogue complain about are due to Nissan’s faulty CVT gearbox. The symptoms include lack of acceleration despite increasing rpms, sudden deceleration while driving, and even stalling.
The current solution for this issue is a gearbox replacement, and Nissan hasn’t made a recall, nor does the automaker cover the $3,000 replacement cost under warranty.
Many owners complain of faulty air-conditioning as well as heater systems. Faulty components can range from failed thermostats, fans, and blower resistors. But the culprit for heater failure is mostly the heater pumps.
There are a bunch of complaints of sunroofs cracking randomly, sometimes with a loud sound, without any external force.
Additional 2016 Nissan Rogue Complaints are for Electrical Glitches, Poorly Latched Hoods, and Dead Steering
There are numerous consumer complaints of water seeping into the 2016 Rogue’s cabin. This is the reason for a majority of its electrical issues. Many owners have experienced horns blaring when the vehicle is off, and instances where the car simply won’t turn off. Also, various warning lights go on and off while driving.
Owners also complain of hoods randomly popping open due to poorly constructed latches. Nissan doesn’t have a proper solution for this, other than tightening the latch.
Another common set of complaints is suspension and steering issues. A bad strut-bearing assembly hampers the driving dynamics. And faulty power steering failure brings up a lot of complaints due to locked steering during drives.
Reliability is Average but with an Annual Maintenance Cost of $325, the 2016 Nissan Rogue is More Affordable to Own than Most Compact SUVs
The 2016 Nissan Rogue has an average amount of recalls and consumer complaints, especially for a model year of its age. Some of the recalls and complaints are serious and relate to engine stalls and possible fire hazards. But on the flip side, the vehicle has a lot of positive aspects, such as many new features and awards.
For the 2016 model year, Rogue added new safety technologies, including forward emergency braking. The 2016 model is also the first in Nissan’s lineup to offer Siri Eyes Free, which allows drivers to interact with Siri on compatible Apple iPhones.
Further reinforcing the 2016 Rogue’s overall quality is its Auto Pacific Best in Class Award for Midsize Crossover SUV, which followed a survey of over 65,000 owners of new 2015 and 2016 cars and light trucks.
All things considered, the 2016 Nissan Rogue as a whole may outsell the sum of its (occasionally faulty parts.) Plus, the 2016 Rogue shines when it comes to running costs, which is only around $325 annually.
