Key Points

  • A class-action lawsuit was filed against Nissan in 2018 for defective transmissions in Sentra, Juke, and Versa Note models. The lawsuit alleged that the defect could lead to sudden and unexpected shaking and jerking while the vehicle was being driven.
  • A settlement for this lawsuit was reached in 2019. Under the settlement, owners received an extension of their original warranty to 84 months or 84,000 miles. Owners of affected vehicles were also eligible to have their repair expenses reimbursed.
  • There are several complaints and recalls for electrical problems on the 2016 Nissan Sentra including failing brake lights as well as poor connections on the engine harness and passenger airbag system.
  • The passenger airbag also suffers from issues related to the inflator and occupant identification system. There are recalls for both issues which could pose a serious safety threat if they are not addressed.

Nissan Sentra’s Continuously Variable Transmission Was the Subject of a Class Action Lawsuit

The 2016 Nissan Sentra was included in a 2018 class-action lawsuit for failing transmissions. It is alleged that the CVTs had a defect that could cause sudden shaking while driving. Owners also say they were unable to accelerate properly.

A settlement was reached in 2019, which resulted in owners receiving an extension of their powertrain warranty. Owners also had repair expenses reimbursed.

Prospective buyers of 2016 Sentra models should pay close attention to the transmission during a test drive, and confirm that the transmission has had regular fluid changes.

Or you can avoid the issue altogether by opting for the six-speed manual transmission.

2016 Nissan Sentra Suffers from Electrical Issues, like Failing Brake Lights and Poor Connections on the Engine Harness

Of the 165 complaints about the 2016 Nissan Sentra registered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), almost 100 are related to electrical issues and powertrain problems.

Nissan issued a recall in 2016 for a faulty engine harness that could lead to the engine running rough, shutting off, or not starting at all. To fix the issue, dealers replaced the defective harness.

Another recall for an electrical issue on the 2016 Sentra was related to the brake lights that failed to illuminate when the driver depressed the pedal.

The recall affects 2016-2019 Sentras and was issued in 2021, so it’s possible that many of the affected vehicles have not had this issue addressed yet.

Unreliable Airbags May Not Deploy Properly in a Crash, Resulting in Three Related Recalls

There have been several issues noted with the 2016 Nissan Sentra’s airbags, which have resulted in recalls. One recall is for a manufacturing error made to the airbag inflator for the passenger airbag, which may not deploy properly.

There is also a recall for a malfunctioning passenger-side wiring harness connector that can result in the passenger airbag not activating in a crash.

An issue with the front passenger airbag sensor resulted in another recall. It may incorrectly identify an adult passenger as a child or identify the seat as empty despite it being occupied.

If this occurs, the airbag may be turned off and not deploy in a crash.

2016 Nissan Sentra is a Reasonably Reliable Sedan with a Fickle CVT

In total, the 2016 Nissan Sentra has six NHTSA recalls and 165 complaints, which compares favorably to its biggest rival, the Honda Civic (three recalls, 621 complaints).

The 2016 Sentra’s biggest trouble spot, the CVT, is a well-documented issue, but preventive maintenance can go a long way. The Sentra is still a solid, reasonably-priced compact sedan with good fuel economy.

You can also avoid the CVT issues by picking up a Sentra with the standard six-speed manual transmission, which will also require less service over the vehicle’s life.

Is the 2016 Nissan Sentra a Reliable Car?

The 2016 Nissan Sentra was given only an “average” predicted reliability rating of 3.5 out of five by J.D. Power, and very low consumer satisfaction scores for its performance. The 2016 Sentra is the subject of 169 NHTSA complaints, six recalls, and 220 TSBs for major mechanical failures with its CVT transmission, engine, and electrical systems.

What is the Most Common Problem with the NIssan Sentra?

The Nissan Sentra’s poorly designed Xtronic CVT transmission has been the subject of multiple lawsuits from 2003-2018. Nissan issued extended warranties to cover valve body replacement, TCM programming, torque converter rods, and leaks, and many owners report complete failure of the transmission below 100,000 miles.

Bad transmission and brake switch
Took my Mom’s 2016 Nissan Sentra in August to have the brake switch replaced as it was recalled now I took it in to Larry H Miller Nissan almost 2 weeks ago because the transmission started acting up like as if it was low on tranny fluid well as of Feb 2023 there was a law suit going on about the cut transmissions they were covering then from 2012 thru 2018 with less then 80 thousand miles well my Mom’s has 70 thousand and they don’t want to cover the transmission these cars look nice and cost enough but are cheaply made I wouldn’t recommend this car to anyone I wouldn’t recommend Nissan period my daughter had an Altima with the same transmission and it did the same thing andNissan wouldn’t do anything about it unless she wanted to pay 5 thousand dollars.

TRASH VEHICLE
2016 Nissan Sentra owner here. I purchased the vehicle used in 2019. I should have known there was a reason the car was so affordable with only 11,000 miles on it at the time. I could never understand why people flew by me on the highway, or why such a modern car struggled uphill. Why did it s**k so badly at accelerating EVEN IN SPORT MODE? Now at just over 58,000 miles and failed transmission, I know why. Not only is this car cheaply made (interior is easily scratched and made of low quality material), but the car’s performance is horrendous. I will never purchase another Nissan for as long as I live. They are the definition of “all that glitters isn’t gold.”

Nice price horrible transmission.
The transmission is trash, the vehicle is a small sedan which in most cases is a gas saver, but in this case the gas to mileage ratio is horrible. I will never purchase another. The sensors do not work appropriately for example there is no check oil sensor. My car's transmission went completely out before the check engine light came on. The rear view camera is pretty nice I guess. That probably the only positive thing that I have to say about it.

Nissan Sentra
I have a 2016 Nissan Sentra and there are some many things wrong with the transmission. They will not do a recall. I will have to pay $6500 for a d**n rebuilt transmission. There is soo much info about this issue. This is my third NISSAN. I love NISSAN but as long as I live. I won't buy another one! The rating..... Should be 0 stars.

My vehicle was cheap and not made with good parts.
The Altima is known for transmission problems and the body is too low to the ground and scrapes anytime you go up a driveway. I also have had problems with the headers on the car. The header got a crack in it for no reason. I believe the Altima is a nice car but to have so many problems for no reason and the warranty is no good.

Bad at inclines great commuter car.
I am a taller person (6’3”) so the seating position can annoying on longer trips as well as the CVT transmission paired with an already gutless engine inline 4 is not great for steep inclines but otherwise typically gets 30 miles to the gallon. Great flat ground commuter city car, bad if going up steep freeways and highways.

Safety Issues Because Of Constant Manufacturer Defects
I don't recommend Nissan Sentra at all, my 2016 model Sentra gave me enough trouble in the last 2 years and the worst performance, the very worst dealer. Every problem that occurred in my car was because of a manufacturer defect. Very worst Automatic gear, throttle body needs to be replaced once in every 6 months....

Do not purchase anything for Nissan because they will not honor warranties.
This car has transmission problems it's not very reliable and my advice is not to ever purchase a Nissan. I have had the vehicle since 2016 the transmission had to be replaced and now it seems to be failing again. The interior of the vehicle is not durable a lot of the vinyl on the doors is coming apart also.

Nissan Sentra car maintenance review.
Lower motor mount replacement, alignment issues, bad acceleration, constantly have to get the air filter replaced, I recently had an issue with the right front hub, the car is still wobbly. I purchased my vehicle from the dealership and the upkeep is so unbelievably pricey, the cars are made very cheap.

Nissan's are the worst cars ever! They're cheap, and the quality is horrible.
Not reliable! Always have issues with this car. It was brand new when I purchased it and I was having problems then. It shakes all the time. The rims are peeling. The bottom rubber thing came off. The visor broke. The gear lights do not work anymore. Worst cars ever! Do not purchase a Nissan!

Why I wouldn't buy a Nissan
The Axle and suspension are not good, they tend to have a lot of recalls on these vehicles, they are gas efficient, the body style is big for no reason, the shocks are not good you feel everything. I have the 2.5 SV but it's overrated. If I could do it all over again I wouldn't buy a Nissan.
accountCircle Corey M on March 27, 2022
I wouldn't recommend buying this car again
The performance of this vehicle is poor and has transmission issues around 60,000 miles. We tried to get it replaced and Nissan wouldn't replace it when it was only 2 years old and in a warranty, but they ended up doing a 'goodwill' replacement and only fixed a part of the transmission.

Overall cheaply put together vehicle.
About 2 weeks after I bought it I noticed some rust spots on the trunk running from the chrome. The carpeting was cut too short and there is a gap on each side. I only got 27 000 miles on my tires. My door knob on the drivers side is broken. Overall very cheaply put together vehicle.

Small gas tank. Saves money on gas.
I wanted something reliable and safe. When I first purchased this vehicle, it was great on gas, and had no problems. After almost a year, it started wasting more gas. The door's rubber started coming off by itself. The radio keeps cutting off. The Bluetooth does not always connect.

Issues with 2016 Nissan Altima.
The windows roll down every time I hit the lock button on the key fob. I do not like the fact that the radio is more for apple and not android. I cannot use my navigation system because it does not have an SD card. The car lights are not that bright. The car handles really good.

My car honks when you put air in the tires.
When I first got the car it was great, now it is becoming louder when it runs and getting shaky as it drives. It gets me from point a to point b but I wish it was still the car I first purchased. I do not mind the car, I take care of it but it is still wearing down quickly.
accountCircle Kris S on July 25, 2021
Bad transmissions, untrustworthy car.
Bought it used. Exactly one year to the day that I bought it the transmission went. Thank god it was still under factory warranty but I will never trust it or any Nissan again. This is my first Nissan and definitely my last. The only good thing was they gave a free rental.

Let me tell you about my Sentra.
My car will just die while I am driving it will jump it go a few blocks and it does the same also lots of electrical problems. All Sentra owners I have talked to have the same problem have had to fix mass airflow two times and the factory alarm gives me lots of problem.

Watch out for the transmissions!!
These are great looking cars but they have to be reliable also....and theyre not... If these were domestic cars there would be billboards all over the place bashing the american car companies. The transmission is worth more then the car!!

I got screwed
I bought a 2016 Nissan Sentra from the Fontana auto group in Bloomington they showed me clean carfax and talked the car up so I went ahead and got it that was a year and a half ago well now the transmission has gone out.

Trash just trash transmission goes out after 6 years with 100.000 highway miles. It’s a shame Nissan builds this c**p and expects people to pay top dollar for it. Don’t wast your money on this companies products

Nissan Sentra 2016 review.
I have had issues with the seals on the doors multiple times and needed them replaced. The basic car with no upgrades, I feel is too basic would be nice to have a backup cam without having to pay thousands more.
