The 2017 Hyundai Elantra has had four recalls in total, according to the NHTSA website. Simply put: It happens. But recalls are not always issued for the reasons you expect. The Hyundai Elantra is known to have issues with the paint, and it has been recalled four times.
So, what do these recalls concern, and do they have anything to do with the paint job?
Two have to do with airbags not inflating;
- One has to do with loss of assist for power braking; and
- One has to do with loss of power for steering assist
As you’ll see, there’s nothing here for the 2017 Hyundai Elantra‘s paint. But that doesn’t mean that the model doesn’t have some serious problems in this regard.

Is a Paint Recall on the Way?
There is no investigation currently underway regarding the 2017 Elantra’s paint-chipping problem, and it is difficult to imagine a scenario in which peeling paint poses an immediate safety risk.
This is not to say that there will certainly not be a paint recall, but it is unlikely to stem from complaints to the NHTSA.
What if the Other Recalls Apply to You?
Checking your car for pending recalls shouldn’t take more than a minute or so. Get the VIN number off your car (your owner’s manual will tell you where to find it), type it into the lookup tool on the NHTSA website, and you’re good to go.
If you find any pending recalls for your Elantra, call Hyundai up at 1-800-243-7766, and they’ll tell you where to go for your repairs.
Recall repairs are free, they last for the lifetime of your car, and they apply to everyone who owns it, whether you’re the first or 500th owner of the vehicle.
