Key Points

  • The 2018 Buick Encore has not been recalled, but owners have reported dangerous vehicle malfunctions.
  • Drivers have reported brake system problems that caused the vehicle to accelerate, resulting in a crash.
  • Multiple owners have had loose hose connections on the turbocharger, which can cause the turbo to fail completely, requiring replacement.
  • A complete loss of power at highway speeds has been reported by owners, with the likely cause being a bad battery or battery connections.
  • The 2018 Encore isn’t known to be problematic, but some issues that are reported are dangerous, and the cause of the problems is often unknown.

Brake System Malfunctions Raise Serious Safety Concerns, as Multiple Owners Report the System Failure Caused a Collision

The most frequently reported problem with the 2018 Buick Encore is also a serious safety concern. Multiple owners have reported through the NHTSA that while driving at speeds of about 45 miles an hour and then applying the brakes, the engine would attempt to accelerate.

One owner reported that they had lost power steering as well as power brakes and that the vehicle began to shake. An additional two other owners reported that the malfunction resulted in an accident.

It is unclear what would cause this problem, and currently, the NHTSA shows that there is no current investigation into this issue. Unfortunately for drivers who experience this problem, there is no known repair or diagnosis, leaving some drivers afraid to operate the vehicle, fearing that the problem could cause a serious accident.

Multiple Reports Show That Connections to the Turbocharger Become Loose, Causing the Turbo to Fail

The drivetrain in the 2018 Encore has few reported issues and seems to be mostly problem-free; however, several owners have reported issues specific to the turbocharger, which could leave owners with an expensive repair bill.

In a registered NHTSA complaint, one owner reports that the turbocharger on his Buick Encore failed twice and needed to be replaced because the turbocharger’s bearing system didn’t receive oil after a supply line had failed.

A second report shows that another driver experienced a similar problem where hoses connected to the turbo came loose. After having the clamps realigned and tightened, the problem occurred again.

Many 2018 Buick Encores on the used market are outside of a warranty, and the price to replace a turbo, according to Repair Pal, is between $1,192 and $1,490.

Dangerous Electronics Failure on the Encore Can Cause a Loss of Power at Highway Speeds

Drivers have also reported loss of power steering and power brakes at highway speeds. Unfortunately, the cause of the problem isn’t clear.

According to this Buick Forums thread, a driver who experienced the problem with reduced power replaced the battery, which seemed to solve the problem. Other Buick owners confirm that the battery and its connections are a likely culprit.

Vehicle History‘s owner reviews also find 2018 Buick Encore owners sharing stories of problems they’ve encountered, including inadequate room for child seats, outdated tech, and electrical glitches.

“As with other Buicks we have owned in the past, our 2018 Encore has electrical problems,” says one owner on Vehicle History, where the 2018 model received a rating of 4.4 out of five stars. “The dashboard does not always stay lit, and the problem extends to the radio. It similarly does not stay lit so we do not know how to change a station.”

“My car is awesome but outdated, and very small,” says another 2018 Buick Encore owner. “For the price I could’ve gotten a small car with a lot more features.”

Problems are Rare on the 2018 Encore, But Issues That Do Occur Can Be Dangerous

With zero recalls and few complaints, the 2018 Buick Encore doesn’t have many problems. However, the brake system malfunctions and loss of power raise serious safety concerns.

For prospective buyers looking at this 2018 Encore, you may want to have the hose connections on the turbo inspected to ensure that the turbo is receiving proper oil flow.

Fortunately, however, for the large majority of 2018 Encores on the road, problems do seem to be rare, and drivers likely won’t face any major issues.

As soon as it is close to warranty range it's problem after pr
I was unaware of Buicks warranty so of course the dealership "kindly" sold me the extended through them. That is not Buicks fault. But I had started having problem around 35,000 miles but each time it was conveniently not covered by either. The next non stop problem came after I was packing my car to go away. I had the hatch and back doors open for about ten minutes while packing it. Went to leave, wouldn't start, charged the battery and was all set. But now stabiltrak error, tire sensor warning, tire light and check engine light r all on. Battery also died again 2more times in a few week period. 3rd time the battery wouldn't charge. Put a new battery and was starting but as soon as stabiltrak comes on it says engine power reduced and the car won't go passed 5 miles an hour. The light randomly comes on w no warning. It happened 2x on the xway, once as I was in the dead center lane during rush hour. Got diagnostic w a list of codes that seem to be common ones for this y,m,m. So trying to fix this has lead to one thing after another. Have just replaced the O2, Maf,map sensors, the intake valve cover and gasket. Now it is leaking coolant rapidly and needs a new water pump. These r all components that work w the engine. Also it has started to rust in spots on the body. I feel like I'm driving a $20,000 shitbox.

Engine over heated
I bought a 2018 Buick Encore in October of 2023 from the Kia dealership near me. On January 4th of 2024 on my way to work the car started to decelerate. Had to get a tow from the off ramp of the highway. Got it towedbaxk to the dealership and was told my engine extremely overheated. Now, I have a service contract but they will not approve the work yet until they know why it overheated. I googledsome things and what I could gather is the 2017-2018. Have coolant leaking problems and engine over heating and also stalls out a lot. The car is a nice vehicle ,but I feel like I'm getting dupped and also the run around from my dealership.

Stay away
No, I would not recommend it. I had nothing but issues. The motor would stop in the middle of driving 65 miles on the highway. The emergency lights did not work when I turned them on the first time. The display fell out - this all when I bought it new in the first 4 weeks. It hadn't gotten better, display flickers. Unexplained battery drainage and the Dealership keeps repairing away and then acting like nothing was wrong. I reached out to the GM, but like always they just connect you from one person to the next.

Problems
At less than 3,000 miles I was driving down the road and all the dash lights came on and the mph and rpm hands went crazy, but it kept running. It has done it twice in less than 3,000 miles. Then I was driving down the road and my digital screen was showing diesel stuff and when I turned the left knob it wasn't showing any of my standard info.

Major Electrical Problem
Car has only 50,000 miles on it and the turbo had to be replaced. Now it is in shop for an electrical problem which they said would cost over $500 to run a test on the car to find the problem. Now they are telling me they are opening a tech case with GM to find out what they are supposed to do. The engine light is constantly coming on

A Buick's electrical problems.
As with other Buicks we have owned in the past, our 2018 encore has electrical problems. The dashboard does not always stay lit. This is very concerning because we also wonder if the headlights are operating. This problem extends to the radio. It similarly does not stay lit so we do not know how to change a station.

Good vehicle, has some issues but not bad.
I had a difficult time finding proper parts at AutoZone or advanced auto parts for just an oil change. Parts are more expensive than should be. More expensive to repair because it is made mostly of plastic. Other than that not a bad vehicle really. Just not my favorite one to drive.

2018 base Buick encore review.
The car does not accelerate well and does not drive smoothly on highways. Does not have blind spot detector. Large inside for a small car. Drives well. Nice interior. Bad blind spots. Wish it had more updated features. Backup camera gets blurry with the rain.

Missing Dipstick
No, GM we 5834 km 'cheapo' and left off the transmission dipstick and filler tube, now the sales persons art extolling the virtues of a 'sealed transmission', that's baloney, especially having to pay $100 to have the dealer check the transmission fluid level!

Rough ride, needs new shocks
Dislike the vehicle very much, it rides like a truck with a very rough suspension (some better shocks ),lacks a few needs in the cab, the car drives well but is not as great on gas as advertised. Seats are very hard like sitting on a hard surface

Safety
Bought this car 10-19-2019. It broke down in less than a week. It took over a month to get the car back. I have broken down 5 times since. I have had it. It stops accelerating. It’s very scary. I do not feel safe in the car.

Break failure 4 times 5800 km
I have had the brakes locked up at 700 km. At 3200, then at 5620 kilometer I replaced the brake switch. This evening they did it again at 5834 km and breaks smoking fumes

Don't get an encore. Not a pleasant ride. Very uncomfortable.
Rides like a tin can. The electrical system works at random. Carplay rarely works. Not pleased at all. If I had purchased it, I would have sold it in a month.
