Orange 2018 Nissan Rogue From Driver Side

You bought the 2018 Nissan Rogue because it’s fun, functional, and full of premium perks.

Now that you have been driving for over 5,000 miles since the last oil change, you might be thinking about doing that chore yourself. First, you need to know what supplies are needed for this necessary maintenance task.

How much and what type of oil do I need for my 2018 Nissan Rogue?

Your 2018 Nissan Rogue needs oil that is labeled as 0W-20. It will need about four-and-a-half quarts to fill up on oil after a filter and oil change. The manufacturer recommends the use of synthetic oil.

Did your old car use a different oil and you still have some on the shelf? Can you use it in your Rogue? Keep reading to learn how oil is rated and why it is crucial to use the right amount and type in your engine.

What Do the Numbers Mean for Oil Type?

The numbers on the front of the bottle of oil refer to its weight or viscosity. Low numbers, like 0W, mean that the oil is thinner and provides easy starting even in low temperatures. The two parts of the oil type refer to its viscosity at cold start and when the oil achieves normal operating temperature.

Heavy-duty vehicles and older engines use heavier oils. Smaller commuter cars like the 2018 Nissan Rogue are designed to use lightweight oils.

Will it Matter If I Use A Different Oil Type in My 2018 Nissan Rogue?

If you do not have any 0W-20 oil in your garage but have a bottle of 10W-40, don’t use it! Using a heavier oil in your precisely engineered motor can prevent the cylinders from moving freely in the engine. This can result in knocking, poor performance, low fuel economy, and can ultimately damage the surfaces inside the engine. Using the wrong oil is the shortcut to killing your engine.

How Do I Know If I Put in Enough or Too Much Oil?

Your 2018 Nissan Rogue owner’s manual has all the information and diagrams needed to learn how to check your oil. Download one to keep in your phone for easy reference.

  • Park your car on a flat surface and let the engine cool for at least 10 minutes
  • Open the hood and pull the orange hoop marked, “Oil”–your dipstick
  • The dipstick is curved at the top and bottom of the measuring area
  • Wipe off the dipstick, insert it again and pull it out
  • If there is oil between the “H” and “L” markings on the stick, you are fine
  • If the level is too high, you may need to drain all the oil and refill it to an appropriate amount. If too low, add half a quart of oil and check again

How Often Should I Change the Oil in My 2018 Nissan Rogue?

If you use the recommended 0W-20 synthetic oil, you can roll up to 7,500 miles between oil changes.

Your driver information system will alert you when it is time to get it done. If you are using traditional oil, you will need to change it out every 3,000 to 4,000 miles.

I Don’t Have the Right Oil. Can I Keep Driving?

If your car is low on oil, it is crucial that you add more oil as soon as possible. If you don’t have any 0W-20 in your garage, it is best to hop a ride with a friend to the auto parts store to pick some up. If there is no option, driving for a few miles on low oil should not cause too much damage. Just make the trip as short as possible. If there is no oil, don’t start the engine.

If the low oil alert keeps tripping on your 2018 Nissan Rogue, you may have a leak and should have a certified automotive technician give your car a thorough inspection.

I purchased a used 2018 Nissan Rogue in September 2021 and I just love it. It's quick, comfortable and distinguished looking. It had more miles on it than I would have preferred but I purchased it anyway. I have not had any problems out of it and don't regret my purchase at all. I have bought Nissan now for over 14 years and I see no reason to stop now. My hobby is changing cars, I have had 6 cars in the past 11 years and all of them were brand new except the Rogue. They have all been great cars and I'm sure whoever purchased them after me, are very satisfied as well. Nissan Rocks!
