2019 Ram 1500 Problems Involve Nearly Every Facet of the Vehicle, Including Breaking Axels and Faulty Drivetrains

2019 Ram 1500 issues are so numerous that it is difficult to keep track of them all. Recalls total nearly two dozen, and consumers’ problems often left their Ram pickups unusable after less than a year from their purchase date.

Key Points

  • The NHTSA database lists 22 recalls for the 2019 Ram 1500, involving breaking axels, faulty drivetrains, and much more.
  • Over the last decade, Chrysler vehicles were slammed by recalls, with the Ram series totaling over 100, but no meaningful change was made to improve the quality of their finished product.
  • Many owners had their new Ram 1500s a matter of days before major alarming issues began to surface, often rendering the pickup unusable before the end of its first year on the road.
  • Electronics systems are faulty, and nearly every part of the truck is affected, making driving the 2019 Ram 1500 a frustrating experience.
  • Reviews for the 2019 Ram 1500 are considerably negative, speaking volumes to the far-flung nature of the problems with the truck.

2019 Ram Pickups Have Nearly Two Dozen Recalls to Their Name, Signaling a Frightening Lack of Accountability by Chrysler

The 2019 Ram 1500 comes from the Chrysler factory equipped with the ability to tow up to 7,500 pounds. It debuted with three engine options boasting a heft of horsepower, and an astonishing number of recalls.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2019 Ram 1500 has racked up 22 recalls in its young life.

Part of a tough decade for Chrysler, this total is double the recalls found for the 2018 model. Further, it is the seventh consecutive year in which the Ram 1500 totaled recall numbers in the double digits.

Some of the more frightening of the 22 recalls for the 2019 Ram 1500 include:

  • Side-curtain airbags that can rupture and injure passengers
  • Improperly installed transfer case that can prevent the driver from being able to park
  • Faulty airbag system that may not deploy in the event of a crash
  • Driveshafts that fracture and separate
  • Rear-axle failure
  • Cruise control that won’t disengage

In short, the pickup is having a lot of issues, despite being a newer model. And the ubiquitous nature of these problems makes driving the 2019 Ram 1500 a bit like playing a game of Jenga—you never know when it’s all going to fall apart.

Customers Who Bought Their 1500s New in 2019 Had Failing Trucks Before the End of the Year

Littered among the many consumer reviews of the 2019 Ram 1500 are reports that buyers had their new trucks become inoperable before even a year of use.

“My 2019 Bighorn has lost all power AGAIN! …This is the third time this exact problem has happened and getting to work so I can pay for this $55,000 paperweight is getting old fast,” shares one Vehicle History owner review. “I can’t stress enough how much I wish I would have bought another Chevy.”

Another Vehicle History reviewer comments, “Less than 3000 miles. Every exterior sensor has malfunctioned. The stereo has stopped making a sound. This truck is a complete disaster! I wish I had my Ford back that I traded for it!”

Even though by most accounts the 2019 Ram is quite capable and steeped in luxury, many drivers immediately saw engine and transmission issues, finding themselves returning to the mechanic time after time.

This is made all the worse knowing that, because of the luxury and comfort, the vehicle’s problems came with a price tag of over $30,000, though higher-end models were no more immune to the problems these trucks see right out of the gate.

Some drivers had their pickups for less than a week. Transmissions failed. Engines failed. Features like the touchscreen infotainment system were inoperable. For many, the 2019 Ram was totally unusable.

2019 Ram 1500 Uconnect 12-inch touchscreen

Discussions on Popular Ram Forums Show the 2019 Pickup’s Electrical System Has Been Problematic for Some

The previously mentioned touchscreen infotainment system found in the 2019 Ram 1500 is only one facet of the many-sided issues with the electronics.

Automotive site Ram Forums shows one 2019 Ram 1500 owner had issues with nearly every electrical component found in the cab of the truck. Power mirrors wouldn’t budge, lights went out, and other electrical gremlins harassed the driver.

Despite the apparent luxury of the 2019 Ram 1500—its comfort, smooth ride, and excellent interior—the driving experience is downgraded significantly by the presence of all these electrical issues, in turn making the usability of the 2019 Ram 1500 so frustrating that many drivers give up on it.

Among complaints about the 2019 Ram 1500, electrical issues take the lion’s share everywhere you look. So many problems crop up that it is no wonder that many find themselves so frustrated with the 2019 Ram 1500 that they sell the vehicle long before they would have otherwise.

In the End, the Problems with the 2019 Ram Pickup Truck Make Safety a Major Concern when Considering a Used Option

Any vehicle, no matter whether it can tow a house or couldn’t handle a ladybug, needs to be able to get its operator to their destination safely. The 2019 Ram 1500 just doesn’t do that as often as it should.

People lose the ability to steer the truck, rear axles break, navigation systems are inoperable, and the fit and finish of the 2019 Ram 1500 seems to be so loose that no two parts work well in unison with the other.

Recalls hit nearly every inch of the 2019 Ram 1500. Though the 2020 model had fewer recalls, it still totaled nearly 10.

The Ram 1500 for 2019 may be the lemon of lemons, but unless a sea change is made in manufacturing processes, we are unlikely to see the end of some of Chrysler’s safety issues.

I had an all new 2019 Ram, no more. Now I drive the classic Ram :)
I owned the all new problems Ram 1500 for about 13 months. That is all the torture I could take. By far the worst work vehicle ever conceived. Nothing worked right. Steering failed, almost wrecked! Bluetooth never worked! Incoming calls sounded like I butt dialed someone because it didn't ring but made the dialing tone instead. Ac blew 15 degrees warmer then the last generation Ram and I always had the fan on high. Every other vehicle I have owned you could turn the ac fan down once things cooled off. My Ram never did get cold. The defrost never turned off fogging up the windshield and that happened everyday. The radio station reception was very poor and the volume would bounce. Which drove me crazy! The weather stripping was falling off the rambox. The tailgate wouldn't pop open on occasion. The vibration cancelation module would go nuts randomly. The gas tank! Only 23 gallons and no mention on the window sticker! I had a V8 hemi crew cab with towing gear and tow hitch. I pulled a trailer for work everyday and everyday I bought gas! Having at least 26 gallons would have been helpful to say the least. One day the truck wouldn't start and was draining the battery over a weekend. Plus, on a side note. Got a letter in the mail mentioning the airbag recalls along with other safety recalls and my wife said the kids were no longer allowed to ride in my new truck. F U Ram you dirt bags built a P O S and the dealers are just as awful as the manufacturer on the new Ram. I drive the last generation Ram currently and after that I don't know. But I Know one thing, I am never trusting Ram again.

Seems like truck skipped final inspection
I live 30-45 mins from any major city so I spend a lot of time in truck. First thing I come to learn iswhen I went to fill up windsheild was her fluid the first time ( I normally would fix my own vechile as I’m mechanically inclined, but don’t have time so I bought new) I come to see what appeared to be a loose bolt on the raf fan frame. Thinking it was weird I looked at other side both sides were loose enough that there was 1/2 inch of thread showing. After tightening them up I thought I would Inspect a little further and come to find my head lightbolts loose, the one side only has 1 bolt left holding it in place as others must have vibrated out so it doesn’t sit straight anymore. Next thing is that ok some random occasions water will pour into the cab from the grab handle on the front column by the steering wheel but yet head liner remains perfectly dry.

2019 Ram 1500 Big Horn
I owned a 2019 Ram 1500 Big horn quad cab V8 with Etorque. I bought it certified pre owned with about 15000 miles. I traded it in on a Toyota after about 3 months. The first days I loved it. All of the features were there. Ride quality and comfort were excellent. Within the first week a check engine light was on. It turned off by the time it got to the dealer, and dealer wouldn't check for codes. It stayed away for a while and came back again when we were 3 hours away from home. We stopped at the dealership where we were on a trip and said it has to do with eTorque system but is safe to drive. After these lights kept going on and off for a couple months, the dealer finally ordered a new system, which was on back order. The next week I traded it in because it wasn't worth my time. Thanks Ram.

Never again
We bought a 2019 Ram in 2021. From a Chevy dealer just off a lease and traded in. Loved it briefly. A couple of months later my husband got stuck in the snow and 4 wheel drive said it was overheated. Didn’t think much at the time but lost 4 wheel drive recently. Front drivers side stub shaft splines stripped. Replace and got back 4 wheel drive. The next week the front passenger side spline is going. Horrible engineering. Everything can get into those parts. Snow, salt, etc.Just past warranty, of course. Ram says oh well, s**k it up. Manifold leaking due to know issue with two different metals that heat and expand and contract differently and bolts break. Ram says oh well, s**k it up. We will never buy a Ram again and will tell everyone we know not to buy one.

2018 Ram Big Horn. At 12000 miles radio system ram called u connect system went haywire. Heater and air would intermittently go off and on. Radio would change stations without touching system. Dealer could not access system to reprogram it. Ram did nothing but refer me to a dealer and rams separate company uconnect did absolutely nothing for me except play the nice guy. The dealer did and I said did work to solve the issue. Without the dealer I would have been in real trouble. I have never felt so helpless.A 49000 d ollar truck with problems at 12000 miles. And I had terrible stress problems with a health issue too.The dealer who I would like to mention but cant solved the problem otherwise I still would be fighting the issue.

Worst vehicle I have ever owned
Please. If you are considering buying one of these think twice. This truck has been in the shop a total of 3 months since I bought it in October of 2018. Endless issues with it. So many I can’t even start to list all of them. The biggest one so far is a valve spring broke in the engine at 90k miles. It has steering issues. The check engine light comes on every 2 months. It has suspension issues. There is a problem with the active grill shutters. These are all the current problems I’m h with it. I refuse to dump any more money into it. Just waiting for a little while longer to trade it in so it’ll be someone else’s problem. I honestly feel bad for whoever ends up buying this thing.

Fog lights, windows, windshield wipers, audio system
Okay got my new truck 2019 tradesman with actually not bad features in December of 2019, after one month I had heard a really loud noise from windshield wipers the mechanism had some factory damage and they changed it, then i found that my foglights are so floppy they're not fixed at the right spot and when you driving you can see how funny and at the same time how stupid it looks like your lights are jumping up and down, next problem driver window when its dry outside I mean no fog no rain when I roll down my window it makes the really weird sound it sounds like gets stuck in the rubber grooves around the window, and still I didn't finish

Transmission Issues That Never Stop
I bought this truck last fall. About a month after auto start would shut off. Engine light would come on. Took it in 3 times they put dielectric grease in the plug going into the TCM transmission control module. They extended my warraty to 100,000 miles. The problem came back again this year but worse. I backed up with the doors closed made it 3' and the truck shut down. It slammed the em brake on, put itself in park. It did that 3 times. Then it would not start. They told me to disconnect the battery. Wiped out the code. Know they have no idea what is wrong with it.

Huh... I've on my 5th RAM lease in the past 11 years and have yet to experience one single issue. There has been several recalls, as with all vehicles, but they have always addressed them while getting my oil changed or tires rotated. There are over 70 models of the RAM 1500 and recalls do not affect every model. You definitely make it sound worse than what it actually is. As a matter of fact upon reviewing other articles that you wrote I noticed that you do nothing but slam every vehicle that you review. That's great if that's your thing but it is very misleading.

My daughter bought a 2019 Dodge Rebel, biggest mess ever! First she noticed if she plugged in her cell to charge it the navigation and entertainment area would go dark, restart every 2 minutes. The brights never worked. Then on the 5th day it just wouldnt start! Almost had to have it towed, but when the tow truck came to haul it back to the dealorship, it decided to start! We drove it back to the dealorahip, and took our 2008 Dodge diesel back. 500,000 miles on it! What happened DODGE???!!! Give up you are over, now that Fiat owned it its gone!

2019 Ram Limited issues
My 2019 Limited has every option but Rambox. I use the truck a lot for work and have 30k miles on it after 6 months of ownership. SiriusXM can't get my radio to accept the signal, engine coolant smell after driving, tow mirrors don't dim or have electric folding feature, 12" screen locks up and I have to pull over to reset it so I can control everything, tailgate sticks, brakes mean and vibrate when backing up and cold, can't see a thing with the backup camera in the dark, gas tank is small, I fill up every 2-3 days, wind noise from glass roof.

The truck had major problems with electrical system. I had to take it to the dealer 2 months after I bought the truck. The truck wouldn’t start half the time, the cluster would light up like a Christmas tree, wipers would randomly on, and it died once on the freeway. The truck literally started flashing pool over the truck was un safe. The dealer had the truck for a year and never figured out the problem. I was very disappointed with Chrysler I had to get a lawyer they didn’t want to take the truck back. I should of stayed with Chevy

Computer system failures
Bought the Ram 1500 Laramie new in 2019. Computer systems failure has sent my truck in for service three times. Second incident entire system shut down while going 55mph on the highway. Was very fortunate that no one (children in truck with me) was injured. Main computer was replaced. However, the computer failed again a month ago. Costs me more to have it towed 60 plus miles for service each time the computer system fails than it does for me to drive it! It worsts new car/truck experience I have ever had.

I have a 1500 classic with no problems. It's my 3rd one. All of those recalls were from specific range of Vins. The more complex a vehicle gets the more problems you may get. There may be 22 recalls, but the number of vehicles involved pale next to GM and Ford. Our organization runs about 1600 cars and trucks nation wide and the Rams are our least problematic. And they are always the first ones to be taken by staff. They are run hard all day. So I have no idea why you can't keep your trucks running.

What's good about this truck
We have had the truck for 2 months and it has spent 10 days in the shop n the problem of a loud humming noise is still present with no way of knowing what triggers it. It is on a second vital recall. The engine light is already on so off to the shop again. This is a lemon n we r stuck with it. When it had 100km of 70 were ours, I told the Abbotsford dealer I didn't like the truck n wanted to change to a different one a day later they said I had to take a loss if I wanted to do that.

Transmission communication issues.
Transmission does not run with a performance at all. When you step on the gas to pass another vehicle and let off the gas, the rpm stays high for longer than normal, and the engine will whine. At other times, you will step on the gas and nothing happens for a few seconds. Extremely irritating when the service department advisors tell you that it cannot be doing that and there is not any way that it is doing these issues at 4000 miles.

I'm having multiple concerns. A very thin windshield that cracked at about 2000 miles, no stone or stone chips of any kind. They won't replace it because there are minor slivers of glass along the crack line that they say was from a stone. I say bs. 1k to replace and limited availability of OEM glass. Reading some similar posts online and this is not a coincidence Starting to see horrible gas mileage after 8k miles.

None of the features work; tailgate doesn’t open, Tailgate light on but not open, back up auto breaks when there is nothing there, back up camera goes black, the radio turns on all by itself, the chrome RAM logo on the dashboard is blinding on a sunny day. Problems: there have been none thus far (at 10,800 miles.). Performance: excellent, for a pickup truck, that is. I find that the 3.21 axle ratio lacks torque/throttle response from low speed, but makes a good acceleration curve at highway speeds. Reliability: so far everything remains in working order.
