Has your search for a medium-duty truck already begun? There’s a pretty good chance you have the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD on your shortlist due to its outstanding capability and comfort, but if you plan on towing, you need to know what it can handle.

What are the most important specs to consider on the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD?

  • Best-in-class towing rating of 18,500 lbs. when properly equipped
  • Fully redesigned for the 2020 model year
  • Three cabs, two bed lengths, two engines to combine per your choice
  • New trailering camera gives you 15 views for safer travels

These features only scratch the tip of what you can find in this pickup truck. Keep on reading to find the specs that you need included in your next truck made for the job site, family vacations, or bringing in the harvest.

The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD: A Pickup Built for Work and Weekends

The Chevrolet Silverado rolled onto the scene in 1999 as a full range of light and heavy-duty trucks designed for shade-tree mechanics, farmers, and construction gurus. The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD represents a full redesign and the introduction of the fourth generation for the HD line.

Offered up as a rear or four-wheel-drive truck, its beefier construction gives the HD a foot up over its smaller, hardworking 1500 cousin.

Popular with owners of travel trailers and fifth-wheels, it is a more than capable tow vehicle. It can also be outfitted with a plow when the Snow Plow Prep package is added to it. A new chassis lowered the weight of the frame while increasing its strength.

The new DuraBed includes 12 tie-down points for securing cargo and is prepped for in-bed LED lighting and a 120-volt outlet for charging up your tools.

The inclusion of wireless technology in the cab and available Chevrolet apps allow you to create a fully functional office on-the-go without overflowing the cabin with additional components.

Automatic climate control, remote start, smart key, and driver assist technology give you much of the same functionality found in your daily driver.

Configure Your Chevy Silverado 2500 HD for Pulling, Payload, and Passengers

Prepared to get down and dirty, you can find a Silverado 2500 HD designed for your specific requirements. The regular cab with two doors available on the WT and LT can seat up to three with its split front bench seat.

The Double Cab features four doors and enough seating for up to five, although the rear passengers should be kids. The Crew Cab gives enough elbow room for your five friends.

Two bed lengths are offered including the long bed able to take a full sheet of wallboard with the tailgate up. The standard bed only requires that you drop the tailgate to fit 8-foot items. Able to haul a payload up to 3,979 pounds, there is little you will have to leave behind for the next truck.

You have your choice of gas or diesel power plants. The 6.6L (400 ci) V8 gasser produces 401 horsepower, enough to clamber over piles of rubble and work through a night of plowing.

Maximize your towing ability with the 6.6L DuraMax turbo diesel that increases horsepower to 445 and provides 910 lb-ft. to tow up 18,500 lb-ft. with a fifth-wheel hitch.

Getting the gear in and out of the bed is easier with the standard CornerStep bumper, the BedStep, and available EZ lift and lower tailgate with power locks.

Cameras Designed for Hitching Up and Avoiding Trouble

For those that are always hitching up to a trailer and spending thousands of miles on the interstate, the trailer camera package is able to give you 15 different views. Select the right angle for hitching up the first time, backing into a narrow loading dock, or keeping an eye on cars in your blind spots.

Interiors Ready for Dust, Dirt, or Luxury Long Hauls

There are five trim levels for the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD including the WT (work truck), Custom, LT, LTZ, and High Country. The WT is ready to get dirty with cloth seats, vinyl floor mats, air conditioning, and the infotainment system with Bluetooth technology.

The Custom dresses up your ride while adding heated trailering mirrors, cruise control, and carpeting.

Find a wealth of your favorite upgrades in the LT including remote keyless entry, a large folding center console, and premium cloth trim. Add a satellite radio, leather-appointed trim, heated steering wheel, and smart key access to the LTZ.

The High Country gives you all the premium amenities including full leather heated seats, a large infotainment system, Head Up display, navigation, and driver memory.

Experts Review the 2020 Silverado 2500 HD

What did the editors have to say when they got their hands on this fully redesigned truck? If you are a dedicated Chevy truck fan, new options like the transparent trailer and 15 available camera views make taking advantage of its best-in-class towing rating very tempting.

There is also a power lower-and-lift tailgate available on the High Country. Its big and beefy grille makes a bold statement and the BedStep is a clever improvement for climbing into the bed.

However, if you’re buying by the numbers, both Ford and RAM heavy-duty trucks offer more muscle.

The RAM also features an available 12-inch tablet-style touchscreen. The Ford Super Duty gives you the choice of massaging front seats. It isn’t really a question of durability, but which truck has the premium feature needed for your particular job.
