Kia Soul driving through creek bed splashing water

If you’re thinking about buying a new or pre-owned Kia Soul, you’re probably considering its performance and features. However, it’s critical to also think about the safety rating on this car to ensure it’s one you can trust to perform well on the road.

How safe is the 2020 Kia Soul?

The 2020 Kia Soul received a four-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and an overall “Good” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, its highest score. Combined with a 4.62 owner star rating and a 4.6/5 expert review star rating at Vehicle History, those are good results.

It’s important to know these stats, but they don’t always tell the whole story when it comes to the overall safety and performance of the vehicle. Luckily, we’ll break down the rest of the results to find out what’s truly safe about the Kia Soul.

2020 Kai Soul Crash Test Ratings

There are a lot of factors to think about when buying a vehicle, and safety is one of the most important. When it comes to determining safety, crash tests are ideal because they simulate accidents in a variety of directions, providing usable information about what could happen.

2020 Kia Soul Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Results

The IIHS has interesting notes about the safety of the 2020 Kia Soul. It gave this vehicle a “Good” score (the highest available) in all areas of crashworthiness. That includes roof, side and head restraint protection. That also includes the risk of overlap in the front.

However, some of the trim options received a “Poor” rating for the headlights on this vehicle. These are on optional upgraded headlights offered by the company. On other crash avoidance and mitigation resources, the vehicle received a “Superior” rating.

2020 Kia Soul National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Safety Results

The NHTSA only gave the Kia Soul four out of five possible stars for safety in its overall rating. The key in this is the front passenger side rating, which was lower. In a frontal crash, the front passenger side appears to have less-than-ideal ability to protect people in that position.

Also notable is the four out of five-star rating for rollovers. This test looks at how likely it is that the vehicle will roll in an accident, which is a very dangerous risk. The dynamic tip result resulted in no rolling. However, the NHTSA still gave this vehicle a rollover risk of 14.7%.

Available Safety Tech on the 2020 Kia Soul

Many vehicle manufacturers are adding more safety into their vehicles in the form of sensors and driver assist features. The same holds true for Kia. These features aim to reduce the risk to drivers when high-risk situations occur. Here are some of the options on the 2020 model.

Auto emergency braking and warning: This type of technology applies the brakes for the driver if there is a risk of collision. This automatically occurs, reducing the risk of collisions.

Lane-keeping assist: This tech option allows the vehicle to sense when the driver is moving out of his or her lane without the turn signal on. It causes the steering wheel to vibrate, helping the driver to react to move the car into the proper lane.

Lane change assist: You can count on this feature to help you change lanes, as it works to ensure no one is in the lane you’re moving into at a position that puts you at risk for an accident.

Rear cross-traffic collision assist: If you’re backing out of a spot, you want to know if there’s a car coming, so you can quickly stop. This tech feature detects traffic moving behind the car and warns you to prevent accidents.

Blind spot collision warning: This component gives you a signal when there is someone in your blind spot – the area where you cannot see who is next to and behind you on the roadway. This can help you make safer lane changes.

Driver attention warning: Sometimes, drivers get distracted. When the vehicle notices swerving or frequent movements outside of the lane, it reacts by issuing a driver warning. This aims to help you pay closer attention.

Kia soul gt turbo-fast, fun, family friendly!
I love my Kia gt turbo soul. It is a quiet comfortable ride. It has plenty of legroom in the front and back seats for tall people. It also has a back seat USB port for charging devices. The pull down counsel in the back is also quite handy. I use the CarPlay connection for my apple phone. I find the wireless charging pad really convenient and use it often. I have the trim level with the ten inch display of information. I really enjoy the sound quality of the audio system and the ease of using the touch screen. The safety features are very well thought out and implemented. It has lane detection, and passing detection; giving a visual and also audio alert. This has been so helpful on many occasions. My trim level has a heads up display which also adds to the really well equipped safety features of the car. It is a fun, safe, and comfortable car.

Love the backup camera for parking!
Love the backup camera! Haven't figured out how to make the inside light turn on when the door is opened. Really liking the automatic headlights and the different time choices for the intermittent wipers. Sad there's not a CD player, but the many radio preset buttons means there's a wide variety of stations I can keep track of. Had some difficulty syncing my phone Bluetooth, but the toll free helpline walked me through it successfully. The warning lights in the side view mirrors means not accidentally cutting another driver off, but I did have to turn off the feature that warns you of being too close to the lane edge. Have not driven in snow yet, but this is my, so it will not be long!

2020 gt- line soul everything you want in a cost efficient vehicle.
This is my third Kia soul in four years. Only because I keep upgrading them. My 2020 gt-line soul is amazing. It has good get up and go, and a sport mode when you need an extra push, I have used it but never needed it the car has a enough power on its own. It is packed with safety features which actually lowered my car insurance. Large media screen, apple play. Backup camera with night vision. The only complaint I have it the trunk area. When you lay the back seats down it is not a level surface there is a deep cargo area as the trunk which makes it hard to load bigger things because it is not flat.

Backseats go down to create a bigger trunk space. Has Bluetooth great on gas.
The Kia soul is great on gas, incredibly comfortable, and very spacious. On average I spend about $26 on gas every 2 weeks which is amazing in my opinion. It does not get better than that. It also comes equipped with gas-saving features so that is cool. It is comfortable and easy to drive and drives very smoothly on the roads. The back seats go down to create one big trunk space which is great for someone like me. The radio gets decently loud & the car does come equipped with Bluetooth. The touchscreen radio is very helpful and I like being able to make a call easily while on the road.

I like how everything is automatic.
I like that it is a small car but has a lot of space in the front two seats. The trunk space could be bigger, but it's not too small. I don't like that sometimes the engine sputters when using the auto engine feature, and even though it gets great gas mileage I can literally watch the gas go down. Overall it's a great car, I really like how everything is automatic to keep the battery from running out. If you leave your lights on inside, after about 30 seconds they will shut off to preserve the battery. The seats are also very comfortable.

Fantastic Kia 2020 model!
The Kia soul s 2020 is a fantastic car in regards to comfort and performance quality. It is an extremely safe car as it has lane assist and auto stop features when a person or vehicle runs towards you unexpectedly. In a way, these safety features helps save money from any car accidents in the long run. When driving long distance on the highway, the sport mode and cruise control is a fantastic way to make driving at ease and very comfortable. The car has not had any issues at all so far which makes this vehicle very reliable.

Safety is first in the Kia soul.
The safety features in the 2020 Kia soul are very helpful to drivers. It has lane assist, blind spot detection, and brake assist for front end collisions. Not only is it safe, but the 2020 Kia soul is very stylish. It has black trim in the inside and the speakers are well placed. The nice touch screen is easy to use and very modern. The only problem I have had with my Kia soul is the tire pressure gauge not resetting after I filled the tired back up with air.

Great all-around vehicle with lots of cargo space and great fuel economy.
This car is fun to drive! It has plenty of head and leg room, even for my 6'3' tall son. We like the safety features, including backup camera, lane assist steering, and hands free control for navigation and audio system. The picture quality on the camera is very good. General visibility and field of vision in this car are very good, and fuel economy is excellent. It has plenty of power for normal day to day driving and handles nicely.

Comfortable, affordable, and smooth ride
The 2020 Kia Soul EX is a fantastic car. It rides very smooth, and it has great safety features. Plus, it is super comfortable inside. There's plenty of room up front as well as in the backseat. The back seats fold down for more trunk space. I have no problems getting everything I need into it. In addition, it's super affordable for a young upstart professional like me. I definitely recommend this car.

I think the best detail is the cars great warranty.
I really like the Kia it is comfortable, quiet and it is a smooth ride. I like the automatic restart. I love the features it has especially the apple car play. It gets great gas mileage and is easy to drive. I like that it is automatic. It has plenty of room for my kids and I have used it to go on vacation and had a lot of trunk space for my luggage. It is also a good value.

New awesome safety features!
We love the stop-start technology. It saves gas when waiting in stopped traffic or ling lights. It also has built in safety features such as keeping the car in the lane and crash preventative alarms when you are going too fast or when another car gets too close. The ac is much better than our last Kia. Also the backup camera and GPS touch screen are my new favorite things.

2020 Kia soul lx - masterpiece and different.
Looking at this car from a distance you'd think there will not be any leg room inside for you and your guests to sit comfortably. In fact, it is the most comfiest I have ever felt in a vehicle for a while. This vehicle provides a feature that helps the driver save gas by it automatically turning off at any stopping point and if you want you can even turn this feature off.

Very good riding feeling and safety features.
Good riding. It even has automatic high beam which is really convenient and lane changer sign so you know when cars are coming in the lane next to yours. It also has navigation you can pull up on the screen so you don't have to look at your small phone screen when you are using the navigation. You can see navigation right from the screen.

The 2020 Kia soul is a great, safe vehicles!
I love my 2020 Kia soul! I have plenty of room for passengers and luggage. It drives very smooth which is nice. It also is very comfortable to ride in, especially with the lower back adjustment. The stereo system is amazing! It has lots of safety features such as lane control, a very clear backup camera, auto braking, etc.

The first impressions of my first ever Kia
I have only owned it for 4 months and so far have had no problems. It is much better than I expected as far as fuel economy, comfort, cost and performance are concerned. I consider it to be one of the best buys I have ever made. Every day I find another surprise feature which is a unique experience for me.

Some of the good and some of the bad about my soul.
I feel that it has a lot of blind spots. I do not like that it didn't come with heated mirrors. I like that it has more horsepower than my previous cars. I like the feature where the car shuts off... Only because I have an option to not use it. I like that it is reliable and I love the two toned color.
accountCircle Shawn F on September 23, 2021
It has useful features like apple carplay and an easy to use GPS feature.
The issues I do have with this vehicle is that it is very slow to react, for example when at a red light it takes some time to pick up and start driving again. It also takes a considerable time to speed up when going onto the highway. The driving feels less smooth than cars I have owned in the past.
accountCircle Tammy S on September 23, 2021
Very responsive handling, a joy to drive.
The only thing that I do not really like is when you are stopped the safety feature feels like the car is cut off, when you take your foot off the brakes it 'starts back up'. I know it is to save on fuel but it is a little unnerving, sometimes it causes hesitation when you are starting off.
accountCircle Mel P on September 23, 2021
It is a good smooth driving car like my last one.
No issues at all so far. I just bought it like 3 weeks ago. I dislike the fuel consumption feature and how its always on as default. I have to toggle it off every time that I think about it which is annoying. On the other hand I like that it comes with a cargo net as default that is cool.

Kia soul gt is a blast to drive.
My Kia soul drives and handles very well. It has two driving modes, one for economy (fuel) and sport. The sport mode adds a little extra pep and makes the car very fun to drive. Tons of safety features like lane assist and a collision warning system make you feel very safe.

2020 Kia soul experience!
I think for a base model vehicle it has a lot of nice features I.E apple/android auto. Performance is reasonable and car is comfortable for my long commute. I would have gone with the turbo model if I could have. My favorite part about the car is how much space it has.

Amazing Value for so much features
I love the Kia Soul. I had a 2015 and purchased a 2020 to replace it. Best car! Rides nice and is very comfortable. Love the apple carplay feature and the backup camera is amazing. The storage in the trunk is bigger than I had in the 2015 and there is more space.

The 2020 soul is an economical vehicle that makes driving a pleasure.
My Kia soul has been reliable, comfortable and stylish. The car is gas efficient. The car has a number of safety features that I love, including lane departure warnings and blind spot indicators. It is also roomy, allowing our family of four to drive comfortably.
