2021 Kia Seltos Problems Include Major Oil Leak Recall, Electrical Power Loss, and Potential Rollaway

Gilbert Smith

With annual service costs coming in well under $500 and no investigations on file since release, the 2021 Kia Seltos is shaping up to be one of the brand’s better SUVs. However, a few scattered complaints of engines stalling and glitchy fuel-saving tech have been registered.

Key Points

  • After its first year on the road, the 2021 Kia Seltos gathered just one recall and 62 complaints. No investigations have yet been filed.
  • The car’s biggest problem so far was a major oil leak recall covering nearly 150,000 Kia units total. This is specific to the 2.0L “Nu” engine.
  • Some 2021 Seltos drivers have reported that the engine’s auto-shutoff feature will fail to restart the engine when releasing the brake.
  • A scarce few reports have been made that the Seltos may not stay put when placed in park, or that it may be difficult to take out of park.
  • At present, it may be too early to say whether the Seltos is a reliable vehicle. But it does have a Top Safety Pick award with the IIHS, and Kias are notoriously easy to maintain.

2021 Kia Seltos’ First Big Problem: Major Oil Leak Recall Affecting Almost 150,000 Models

The 2021 Kia Seltos has had a pretty smooth rollout thus far, with only 62 complaints on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as of this writing. And 24 of the complaints are for the engine, making up a little more than a third of the total.

The main complaint: The car is stalling at stop signs and red lights. This is often accompanied by excessive oil use, oil warning lights dinging on, and other signs of oil leaks. Which means that more of these instances than not likely relate to the car’s sole recall.

In April of 2021, the car was called back into the shop for piston oil rings which were not properly heat treated. The recall covered nearly 150,000 Kias, including a number of 2020 Souls, and 2021 Souls and Seltos, specifically those packing a 2.0L Nu MPI engine under the hood.

The incident rate here is rather low, but the potential severity of the problem is rather high. Left unchecked, serious damage can be done by driving without adequate oil. Some drivers have reportedly been made to wait on the recall, with at least one eventually requiring a whole new engine.

Fuel-saving Feature Has the Kia Seltos Shutting Down at Stop Signs and Failing to Start Back Up

The 2021 Kia Seltos uses a fuel-saving feature, shutting the engine off at a stop so that it’s not burning gas while idling. When it works, this feature can save drivers hundreds of dollars a year at the pump. When it doesn’t, you wind up stranded at stop signs and red lights.

Cars using this feature are supposed to restart the engine as soon as you take your foot off the brake, but in a handful of 2021 Kia Seltos, this is, reportedly, not happening. In some instances, the entire car will shut down. This isn’t the same thing as engine stall, rather, this is an electrical issue.

Best case scenario, drivers can simply hit the ignition and start’er up again, but it goes without saying: this isn’t what you want to be doing at every single stop sign.

As with the oil leak, this is happening at a low enough rate of incidence that it probably won’t affect you. Unlike with the oil leak, this has yet to result in a recall or an investigation, so drivers dealing with this will likely have to rely on their warranty or pay for the fix out of pocket.

A Few Drivers Have Reported Their SUV Fails to Shift Out of Park, While One Mentions the Vehicle Won’t Stay Put When Parked

One driver reports that their car will not stay put when they put it in park. Other drivers report that the car will get stuck in park, and they are unable to shift it into drive or neutral. The latter of these problems is the more common of the two. Complaints in both instances are few, but the former driver has just one report on file.

When you add this to the other transmission problems, both on the NHTSA website and on various auto forums, you have a clear pattern emerging: This car may have some difficulty when it comes to shifting gears.

Though it probably won’t have any problems, if it does, they’ll most likely be in the transmission.

It May Be Too Early to Call, but the Kia Seltos is Shaping up to Be a Safe, Reliable SUV

For all of the problems listed here, rate of incidence is rather low. In total, there are fewer than 100 complaints on file, with Kia having sold more than 50,000 of these cars in 2021. So the odds of your Seltos being affected are well under one in five hundred.

While the outlook so far is quite positive, remember that the Seltos was only launched in North America in 2021, so it’s difficult to say whether or not the nameplate is reliable at this point. There simply isn’t much data available on which to make an informed guess at present.

But, it has a four-star safety rating with the NHTSA and is a Top Safety Pick award with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Seltos also average less than $500 a year for maintenance costs, per Repair Pal.

If the Kia Seltos turns out to be anything less than safe and reliable in the long run, well… that would be surprising.

Oil going dry in less than 4000 miles
2021 Kia Seltos S 2.0L. Let me start by first, my dealership changed my oil change schedule from every 7500 miles to 5000 a year ago at around 15,000 miles. They said it was due to our weather conditions here in WI. At 4000 miles in, went to get an oil change at a different mechanic due to heading out on trip that was going to end up putting me over so might as well. They tell me I was near bone dry on oil. What?? 4500 miles after that, my engine hesitates then dies. Check oil and doesn't even read on stick. Dealership doesn't know what's happening and I'm suppose to bring it back after 1000 miles to see how much oil my car has used. Reading up,Kua finds it normal to use 1 qt every 1000 miles. If my car only holds 4 qts, how is it I'm suppose to go 7500 miles on an oil change? I also wonder if my dealership seen it nearly empty when thet switched me to every 5000 miles but didn't tell me. Seriously considering getting out from under this heap before it leaves me completely stranded. Too bad Kia...shame on you!

Kia America did not honor an engine replacement/ engine failure due to the EXACT reason stated in the recall
We own a 2021 Kia Seltos. We noticed it was consuming A LOT of oil, took it in twice while under warranty, both time they said it was “within range”. 30K miles outside of warranty, engine failure for the exact cause our engine was SUPPOSED to be covered under the recall. We submitted a goodwill claim, waited 3 MONTHS for a response and the answer was no. Their reason - we used after market oil. The dealership said there is no such thing as “after market oil” - the dealership even advocated for us to Kia America telling them this was their oversight and it should be replaced at no cost. It’s nice to know there are still honest people in the world. But I don’t even think Kia America even looked into it before denying it. We ended up paying $5,500 for a BRAND NEW ENGINE, only to be told afterwards that the “standard warranty” for a brand new engine is 12 months 12,000 miles. Make it make sense.

They force you to get oil changes at the dealer!
I bought a 2021 Seltos in April 2020. I had my first oil change (not at Kia) and within a few months, there was a horrible ticking noise in the engine. The dealer told me that Kia does not alert buyers to this problem but the engines do not like aftermarket oil filters and they starve the engine of oil. The next phone call to me tried to say they weren’t covering it under warranty because of the company that did the oil change using the wrong filter (lies). After reading back notes and dates of conversations I had leading up to that suddenly they changed their tune and replaced the entire engine block under warranty but it was a good 3 months start to finish.

So far so good.
Got the 2021 kia seltos sx turbo, just crossed 20,000 miles no issues. Still runs strong, i drive it 230 miles plus a day m-f as im a medical courier. Granted. I bought it used with 12k miles like 2 months ago. I dont use smart mode or sport mode, i leave it on normal mode. I cut the start stop off, make me feel like ill wear out the starter with the amount of driving i do. Maybe its too early to tell, i did do my due diligence so i stayed away from the 2.0 engine. My only concern is i have a 1.6turbo gdi, and gdi are notorious for gunk build up. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Clicking sounds, shut off and low engine oil l
I purchased a 2021 Seltos S AWD in 05/2020, within two years (25k milles ) of bringing Home my Seltos an unexpected shut off happened , vehicle towed to Dealership , only one Qt of oil was found in the engine at dealership shop.. Six months after this event the clicking noise reappeared, I took it to the dealer, again the engine was almost empty of oil. I did not see oil warning lights dinging on dashboard, oil change done at dealership only, no oil spots noticed on the parking driveway. I am very concerned at these events continue to happen

Transmission Issues (don't recommend to anyone)
Regret buying a 2021 KIA Seltos. Barely drove the vehicle and its transmission broke down. Also, there are multiple warning signs popping up on the dashboard and the dealer doesn't know the fix. The dealer updated the software twice but didn't fix the issue. This is what they offered me "Kia will provide you with 3 Car payments reimbursed for a total of $1,252.53 as a gesture of goodwill for any inconveniences you have experienced and consider your claim fully settled." What good is it if I can't use the car that I am paying for?

CVT transmission replaced @ 3200 miles.
I bought 2 Kia Seltos, one is a Sport and the other is the Sport turbo AWD, the ST AWD is awesome no issues, the Sport on the other hand is in the shop waiting for a transmission (CVT) blew in only 5 months and 3200 miles. We have been waiting now 41 days for the CVT to come in finally it is in LA and on its way so we should get it back within the next two weeks needless to say we are very disappointed in the Sport model, good thing I'm Leasing it I will be re-selecting when the lease is up.

Car shut off
I purchased a 2021 Kia Seltos June 2020. 29178 miles later it shutoff on me twice while driving. The check engine light came on after it shutoff the first time. KIA will not give you a loaner car until the car they run a diagnostic check. KIA corporate office can override the decision. You can't get in touch with them. Trying to email is impossible also. It keep saying, session timed out. I have a camshaft correlatin code. I have to pay for a oil change and bring the car back at 1000 miles.

2700 miles to a new transmission
New baby, new car, until it broke down halfway to the beach with less than 3000 miles on it and had to be towed in an area without a signal. Really nice to wait on the side of the road for an hour with my wife and 5-month old child for a tow truck. It was super hot and super dangerous. They are putting a new transmission in now but they said it could take a month. I can't wait for this transmission to nearly get us killed. Otherwise, we really liked the car! Do not buy this car.

Never will buy a Kia AGAIN!
At 1,000 miles I needed a new radiator as I was told during production they didn't "crimp" the seal around the radiator properly. Was told no engine damage was done given that it overheated and stalled while driving. No censors had gone off prior to the engine just stopping. Then two days ago engine was seized. No warning, no censors had gone off. I am now in communication with Kia Corporate stating I don't want my car back and I will never buy another Kia ever again!

Common Transmission Issue
After 5 months of ownership, the transmission failed. I spent hours on the phone trying to get it towed and serviced. The dealership servicing it refused to give a rental or loaner. After hours on the phone with kia customer service, they finally gave me a rental so I could get home from the dealership. 40 days later, still no ETA on the transmission. If you want to spend time at the dealership driving a shitty rental, get the seltos. Pain and anger guaranteed

Transmission failure
Transmission went out back in February right before the big ice storm in Texas. Roadside assistance couldn't get anyone out to me until the next day. Good thing I was close to home or I would have had to sleep in my car. The transmission was replaced back in March. Not even a month after I am having to take it back which I suspect is for more transmission problems. Don't recommend buying. First and last time I am owning a KIA product.

Electrical faults
This is an Australian model, but it is interesting to see if the US model has same problem. 1) front parking sensor only work if the car has used the reverse gear first. 2) Speed Limiter automatically sets a maximum speed of 30ks p hour when the + button is pressed irrespective of the speed that you are travelling, quite dangerous if travelling on highway. If these are faulty what else may not be working correctly?

Just paid $1150 for new radiator in my 2021 said road debis put hole in radiator but never a drop of water anywhere days before and radiator mounted really high maybe I should have looked at old radiator before paying since some one had bad radiator on same car..check first

Less than 10000 miles in the car already needs a new engine now here I am without a car after paying $30000 $30000 for a new car dealership did not even give me a rental and I have to wait on Kia to approve the repairs let's just hope it's covered under the warranty

Check engine light
Currently at 700 miles haven't had this vehicle for a month. Was parked and the check engine light came on and turned off. Turned it on and was driving and it was jerking. This is my 1st brand new vehicle not supposed to have car problems yet.
