Red 2017 Hyundai Elantra From Front-Driver Side

Four safety recalls have been issued against the 2017 Hyundai Elantra. Three of the recalls were relatively minor, impacting only a handful of vehicles. The most severe recall impacted nearly 34,000 vehicles. Here’s a look at the recalls issued against the 2017 Hyundai Elantra.

Recall #1: Frontal Airbag

The first safety recall against the 2017 Hyundai Elantra involved a chemical in the driver’s side airbag. The airbags in this recall were actually missing a chemical enhancer that launches the second stage of an airbag deployment in a crash. There was no problem with the primary stage of airbag deployment, but the second stage was not functioning properly in certain crashes. This recall was pinpointed to 33 individual 2017 Hyundai Elantra vehicles.

The recall was issued in May of 2016 and was assigned recall number 16V232000 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Recall #2: Driver Side Airbag Module

The frontal airbag inflator on the driver’s side of the vehicle was the issue that led to the second safety recall of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra. The end seal for the inflator module may not have been properly installed. This caused the driver’s side airbag to fail to fully inflate in the event of a crash. This was another relatively tiny recall, impacting only 110 vehicles of the nearly 200,000 Hyundai Elantras sold in 2017.

This recall was issued in February of 2017 and was assigned NHTSA recall number 16V956000.

Recall #3: Brake Booster Hydraulic Failure

The third safety recall on the 2017 Hyundai Elantra was the largest one to date, affecting 33,803 cars. The hydraulic booster for the vehicle’s power brake assist was failing in certain instances. This resulted in a loss of power brake assist, which means that it would take the vehicle a longer time (and more distance) to decelerate and come to a stop. This greatly increased the risk of causing a rear-end crash on another vehicle, or crashing the Elantra into something else as the driver attempts (and fails) to stop in time.

Hyundai dealerships will replace the brake booster system assembly at no cost to owners of vehicles affected by the recall.

This recall began in February of 2017 and was assigned NHTSA recall number 17V063000.

Recall #4: Electronic Power Steering Assist

2017 Hyundai Elantra enjoys more agile steering when compared to previous iterations, particularly the Sport trim. This was due in part to Hyundai’s Electronic Power Steering module. This is basically a small motor that kicks in to provide better power steering when the vehicle engages in turns.

But in a small number of 2017 Hyundai Elantras, the connector on the Electronic Power Steering module was damaged. This caused the power steering assistance to not kick in during turns as it was supposed to. The problem made it extremely difficult to turn the vehicle, especially at lower speeds. If your 2017 Hyundai Elantra is one of the 99 vehicles impacted by this recall, a Hyundai dealer will replace the Electronic Power Steering motor at no cost.

This recall was issued in April of 2017 and was assigned NHTSA recall number 17V213000.

How to Check Your 2017 Hyundai Elantra for a Safety Recall

If you own a 2017 Hyundai Elantra and want to learn whether there are any safety recalls against your specific vehicle, the first step is to locate the 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Then, you can type in the VIN at the Hyundai Recall website or call Hyundai customer service at (855) 371-9460.

Never again
The car is ok and has been UNTIL the 62,000 mile mark. Had a number 1 cylinder issue show up on the tester. Called local dealer and said NOT under warranty. Took car to local mechanic that I have used for 25 years. Local guy said Elantra has issues and Hyundai had a recall on that issue??? SO... I called Hyundai dealer again! They said NO recall??? So I went to Auto Zone and bought plugs and ignition coil AND just fixed it myself! On a side note, I paid the car off almost 3 weeks ago and I am STILL waiting for lien release!! Hyundai Finance is AWFUL!!! They cannot speak English. They ALL say this... I will send an expedite on it and it will take 7 to 10 days to release the lien!!! THAT was 15 business days ago! They have my MONEY and Title!!! I was looking at the new Santa Cruz BUT not anymore! Bye Hyundai! Good luck folks.

Motor blew at 150,000
I highly recommend getting anything else I got his car at 20 km I was the second owner , she’s been a decent car up until my motor gave out 2 weeks before Christmas… I looked it up apparently it’s know that these cars motors usually don’t last past 150 kms ,everyone tells me there is recalls on my car for the motor but I don’t see it or heard about it… which is odd Especially since online has said they are known for motor problems .

Hyundai runaround
My check engine light is on. The repair shop says there is a recall for the problem. I contacted 2 dealerships, both say no recall. I called Hyundai customer service. After much runaround, including a "Hyundai account" which I have no knowledge of, I asked the simple question, is there a recall. She refused to answer. I ask several times and finally absolutely demanded an answer. She finally said no recall.

Do not waste your money on a Hyundai Elantra.
My Hyundai Elantra has given me several problems since I purchased it in 2016. The car had several recalls requiring me to take it in for service. I have purchase other Hyundai’s in the past but never had these types of problems. The interior of the car is okay. The touchscreen does not recognize my fingerprint at times. The background screen sometimes turns blue and does not produce the camera view.

Luxury features wrapped in a low price.
I have had a spark plug problem which seems to be very common for this year/make of car and should be to the point of recall. But as long as you are still under warranty that is not an issue, they'll fix for free (as long as they can get it to read on a check engine light/computer check). But I really do love this car as much as I loved the price.

White paint job peeling
My 81 year old mother has a 2017 white elantra and the paint on the hood and roof is peeling off! Apparently Hyundai was aware of this issue! The dealer in Henderson Nv on Boulder hwy will not help her in any way. She tried to go thru her insurance company(allstate). Apparently comprehensive insurance won't cover it. Shame on Hyundai @

2017 Hyundai Elantra Review
This vehicles performance is pretty good overall, however things that can be improved are as follows: the gas per mileage, the amount of recalls it has (I've had at least four since I've owned this vehicle). Otherwise, the way it runs is pretty smooth and I haven't had too many problems from this vehicle

Overall great car but kind of small trunk.
I have had a recall on my car as well as had to have the same problem with springs fixed twice. Hyundai knew about the problem and fixed both times in a timely manner other than that I love my car other than the trunk is kind of small.
