All About The 2011 Hyundai Sonata Engine Recalls

When the 2011 Hyundai Sonata came on the scene, there was no doubt it would serve as a dependable ride. And while it has, issues have cropped up over the years. Since the defects were not apparent until later, the manufacturer had to send out recall notices to the owners.

Have there been any engine recalls issued for the 2011 Hyundai Sonata?

Yes, as of August 2020, two engine recalls are on the books due to complaints, such as:

  • An obvious gas leak from the fuel pipe
  • Knocking noise from the engine bay
  • Engine stall or outright failure

Thankfully, we are here to help you better understand the two engine recalls affecting the 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The information we share will help you get the recall repairs done, so you can get back to enjoying your car.

Rapid Connection Rod Wear May Result in Engine Failure

NHTSA Recall ID: 15V568000

Your engine uses small passages to deliver oil to all the moving parts. The oil not only lubricates the parts to keep them moving freely but also cools them down.

Unfortunately, when Hyundai manufactured their naturally aspirated and turbo 2.0L direct-injection engines, metal debris was sometimes left inside after machining. The debris then got stuck in the oil passages for the connecting rods, starving them of oil and accelerating bearing wear.

If allowed to continue, the bearings could fail while driving and cause your engine to stall out.

Depending on the level of damage that exists when you bring your car into the shop, technicians will either perform repairs or replace the engine outright.

To complete repairs, they must clear out the oil passages and replace the connecting rod bearings. If that’s not possible, then they will likely just replace the engine with one that was correctly machined.

Fuel Pump Leak at the Outlet Could Cause Engine Stall

NHTSA Recall ID: 18V934000

On vehicles that had their engine replaced due to blocked oil passages, the service may have resulted in damage to the high-pressure fuel pipe. While maneuvering the engine into place, the fuel pipe may have been crushed, poorly torqued, or simply not aligned properly.

If that happened, fuel could start to leak near the fuel pump outlet and potentially cause a fire. The repairs involve replacement of the affected fuel pipe to stop the leak and resolve the issue in full.

How Do You Address a Recall on a 2011 Hyundai Sonata?

Does your 2011 Sonata have an open recall? To check, head over to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website with your VIN or year, make, and model. Upon inputting that information into the textbox, the system will let you know about any open recalls.

If your vehicle needs repairs, just call 1-855-671-3059 to speak to the Hyundai customer service team. With their help, you will learn where to take your car for repairs and how to move through the next steps.

2011 Sonata blown engine
Had bought car used from Carvana with 72000 and with extended warranty. Had it just over 12 months with 84000 miles. Engine seized on interstate while doing about 65 miles an hour. Come very close to being rear-ended by a truck. Called Silver rock and they refused repair as I was 6 days out of the extended warranty. Got hold of Hyundai and was told to bring it in to the dealership. Trouble is the dealership 119 mile away. I'm older retired on social security only. Haven't the money to get it towed. I'm also hearing Hyundai is refusing class action lawsuit warranty due to negligence, asking for maintenance records. I do my own oil Drove car just over a year. Had 72000 when I bought it from Carvana. Engine seized at 84000. Heard Hyundai was denying claim due to negligence and lack of maintenance. They did claim the VIN was included in the class action and to bring it to the dealership 119 miles away from me. Im a senior on social security and can't afford a tow so far away. I did my own oil changes and didn't think to keep the receipts. Did two oil changes of which I did myself in my driveway. I am trying to get receipts from Auto zone. I'm afraid if I finally get the money to have it towed so far to Hyundai they will refuse the repair. Then I have to pay for storage until I can get the money to have it towed back to my house, Then what? So I'm paying for a car I can't drive and can't afford to get fixed. I'm considering a voluntary repo as I can't save enough money to get another car while paying on this one. Wished I had done due diligence and researched this car as I would never had bought a Hyundai if I had known about the milling issues and clogged oil port going to the connecting rod bearings. Beware Carvana, Silver Rock and Hyundai. I worked years to get good credit and now it will be gone. I'll never by another Hyundai product.

2011 Sonata, empty on oil with no warning.
Our 2011 Sonata, starting stalling while driving it. We bought it with 3000 mile on it . It is an XLE style. This has been a perfect car. When the oil was checked it appeared to be empty on oil. It had never leaked or used oil the entire time we have had it. We kept it serviced everytime it needed it. Why would a car suddenly be empty on oil? No oil ever under it and never low when serviced. Has anyone else ever experienced this with their Sonata? We have been told that the motor is destroyed because they found metal shavings on the dipstick. Please any help would be appreciated!

My motor just went out
My car is a 2011 and had it for 2 years now and was driving and just cut off in the middle off the road . I didn’t have any problems with my car. No engine has been on or nothing. It was time for a oil change. I took it to a dealer ship and they said the motor gone but it’s no recall on my motor. This why I can to search for a recall cus someone was telling me about this.

Engine failure
Our 2011 Sonata died while driving. We found out that there was complete engine failure. We are having it towed to the dealership. I talked to Hyundai customer care and was told that there is an extended warranty but the dealership just inspect to see if it is covered.

Engine review
Honestly, this car scared me. My car ran perfectly fine & then all of a sudden my engine, oil & batter light flickered & my car “shut off” (I was on a highway) just to find out it had a recall. I’ll never own another one of Hyundai ever
