Car buyers in the U.S. and throughout the world recognize BMW’s reputation for building safe and high-performing vehicles. However, sometimes issues escape factory notice, only to show up when the vehicle is already in customers’ hands.

Were there any timing chain recalls on any BMW vehicle equipped with the N20 engine

As of September 2020, no. However, there were numerous owner complaints and problems recorded concerning this issue, including:

  • Premature timing chain failure
  • Vehicle went into limp mode with transmission malfunction warning
  • Timing chain failure due to broken chain guard

This article takes a deep dive into the above problems, and owner complaints related to the BMW N20 timing chain, as well as any recalls associated with said issue. You’ll also find more information about how to handle a recall on your BMW vehicle.

Vehicle Went into Limp Mode with Transmission Malfunction Warning

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11328966

According to the owner, an unknown malfunction caused the vehicle to go into limp mode. The transmission malfunction warning light also appeared on the dashboard.

The vehicle was taken into service, and service advisors initially diagnosed an oil leak, faulty air tube, and the need for a programming update.

However, the service advisor later pinpointed the problem to a timing chain failure and recommended replacement.

It is unknown whether the manufacturer provided repairs or if the owner performed repairs at their own expense.

Timing Chain Failure Due to Broken Chain Guard

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11328574

The owner of a 2013 BMW X3 reported a timing chain failure likely caused by a broken timing chain guard. The timing chain failure subsequently led to engine failure.

The owner was informed of the N20 timing chain issue and that the component was supposedly upgraded in 2015.

It is unknown whether the vehicle received repairs for this issue.

High-Pressure Fuel Pump Replacement/Timing Chain Inspection

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11329467

During a routine inspection, the complainant was informed that their 2013 BMW 328Xi required a timing chain replacement.

The vehicle previously underwent repairs for a high-pressure fuel pump due to a previous stall during vehicle operation.

The owner later learned of issues surrounding the N20 timing chain. As of this complaint, the owner has yet to replace the timing chain.

Premature Timing Chain Failure

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11351232

According to the complaint, the owner of a 2013 BMW 328i xDrive suspected an impending timing chain failure. The vehicle was brought in for service, where a service advisor recommended an in-depth inspection. The owner declined the inspection due to costs.

The owner later reported a timing chain failure at 82,000 miles. It is unknown whether the vehicle received further service.

Timing Chain Failure

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11319805

While driving, the owner noticed a “Check Oil” light. According to the driver, a “Drivetrain Failure” appeared minutes later and engine failure occurred an additional three minutes later.

Upon inspection by a BMW dealer, the service advisor noticed metal fragments in the oil but could not inspect further without engine disassembly. The owner speculates that a defective timing chain may have caused the issue.

So far, it is unknown whether repairs were made.

Timing chain malfunction destroying my engine.
I have a 2013 X3 28i with only 95, 000. On March 9th 2023 while I was going 60 miles an hour on a highway my engine told me my oil was dangerously low then within 10 seconds it red drivetrain malfunction pullover shut off engine. There's no place I could pull off on the highway I continued to the next exit prior to getting to the exit the engine just shut off. I posted off the highway into a parking lot in the SUV stopped. My mechanic told me it's a timing chain and the engine needs to be replaced. I contacted BMW corporate office. Gave me the runaround. Told me that they sent out notifications which they did not cuz I did not receive a notification pertaining to this issue. I did receive a notification regarding a computer update for the catalytic converter but nothing else. They, BMW is not want to take responsibility even though there was a class action suit against them. When the car was running I loved it it is a great vehicle had no problems up until this point. I am contacting the attorney general's office in my state and the Federal trade commission to see what recourse I have. BMW corporation told me they have no email address for me but I received emails from them almost every month or two regarding their latest vehicles and deals on there vehicles. There's no reason they should not have notified me by mail text or email. They asked me if I bring my BMW to a certified BMW dealership or an independent mechanic. I told them independent mechanic because I'm not going to be charged three times more than an independent mechanic charges. I was then told had you brought your vehicle to a "certified dealership" they would have told me about the problem. So I asked her so you penalize people for not overpaying for general maintenance at a certified BMW dealership by not notifying them of recalls and defects in the vehicles correct? Of course she said no we don't do that. So I asked then why didn't I receive notification via letter email or text. She claimed they sent a letter which of course they did not anyone can doctor those computer files. Don't you think that anyone who owns a BMW or any vehicle for that matter who receives a notification saying the timing chain can malfunction on your vehicle causing you to replace an entire vehicle for upwards of $12,000 would not immediately have that checked? BMW is nasty.

2013 BMW 328I
Purchased the vehicle from the original owner in December 2022 for my granddaughter as a Christmas present. In August 2023 there is a complete engine failure due to timing chain failure. There were several different messages prior to the engine completely failed while she was driving and stuck in traffic which is very dangerous. Car was well maintained by the previous owner with regular oil changes and customary repairs. Cannot believe that this has happened. We have been told that the engine needs to be completely replaced @ a cost of $8,000.00. Tried to check if there is a recall for this problem, claim across a lawsuit the was settled and closed several years ago, come to find out some of the claimants have not received compensation yet or if they did it was 1/4 of what they spent to repair the issue. BMW and the Lawyers that represented the claimants should be ashamed!!!! I also have a 2017 BMW 525i, after paying off the car @ the 5 years, had transmission issues, had the replace the transmission. Wrote letter to BMW Corporate Office of the issue and they said that they cannot help me and I paid alot of money to fix. In reading everyones complaints I feel the car companies should be responsible for repairs for big repairs, because obviously cars are not built to last for ever. Car Companies especially BMW are making alot of money on their lemons by building faulty vehicles with big ticket repairs.

I will never own a BMW again!
In July of 2023, my 2013 X3 with only 66,000 miles on it, stopped on a busy highway in the passing lane because of a premature timing chain breaking and destroying my motor! I was very fortunate not to have cause any accidents although there were a lot of near misses. The tow truck driver had a heck of a time loading it onto his truck because it was stuck in park. To add insult to injury, I only have three payments left on it! Bought this certified used from a BMW dealership and thinking this was going to be my car for a long while due to BMW's reputation. I called BMW about it and the only thing they can do is document my complaint and because I missed the class action lawsuit a couple years ago, I am SOL. I had to take out a small loan in order to get the engine replaced. I am not rich and saved up my hard earned money to get my dream car and thought I was investing in a quality car but I was sure wrong. I was so excited to be able to say I owned this car after getting it paid off and now I am looking to get another car. I have lost my trust in BMW and will never own another again! As soon as I get this card fixed I am selling it and going with a reliable Honda with a lifetime drivetrain warranty. Buyer beware! Never again with BMW!

Timing chain broken at 112k
Broken timing chain on my 2013 BMW X3 at 112k. I was not aware of the class action lawsuit, never received anything about it. Dealership says timing chain broke and they recommend a new engine. Customer relations says they can’t help due to over miles/years. I only found out about the timing chain issue after my car shut down during my 10 minute drive to work, only made is half way to work that morning. I barely got pulled off the road when it completely shut down. I pulled over right after it indicated my oil pressure was low and to pull over asap and shut car off because engine was at risk of being damaged. This happened roughly 2 weeks ago, I finally hear from service manager about the results of the diagnostics today. I don’t know what to do at this point. $12 estimate to replace engine and components. How is this not considered a safety recall, I am extremely disappointed with my first bmw.

Really BMW NO Recall??? WTH??
My Wife and I bought a 2013 528i xdrive in September 2016 from BMW Oyster Bay NY. They sold me a LEMON is the way I see it! They fixed the N20 & N26 engine issue in 2015!! No one at the dealership ever mentioned anything about a issue or future issue or I wouldn’t of bought this piece of s**t!! This car shut itself down on a highway with no shoulder to pull over on during rush hour traffic in NYC!! We even bought an extended $3800.00 warranty on the EFFIN thing and again No one ever mentioned anything!! This car has been dealer maintained up until January 2022 We went in for a new battery and program. More c**p with all this programing!! Again No one mentioned anything about timing chain issue that completely ruin your engine!! This happened to us on 8/1/ 2022. I’wont stop hounding these F*C# s until they fix this “Ultamate Driving Machine”

DO NOT PURCHASE A BMW!!!!!! BEWARE
I brought a brand new 2012 BMW 328i and at 94k miles the timing chain jumped. I was told it jumped because the engines that are in the BMW's are on a incorrect Maintenance plan!!! The maintenance plan states to get an oil/filter change every 10k miles when it should be 3500k-6k. BMW knew/know this and instead of recalling all of the faulty engines they allowed the consumer to continue on the Factory Maintenance, when they knew those engines ARE GARBAGE!!! I joined a class action lawsuit Gelis vs BMW two years ago and was told that we would be reimbursed for the repairs. The monies were released last year and I just got a check 11/3/22 for 1/3 of the amount that I paid to repair (put a bandaid on my car). All of the service work was done at BMW Regency or BMW Orange Park I was told I needed a new car. If I could give BMW a ZERO I WOULD

Anyone with a BMW beware!!!
Nobody really knows the extent of how many people were or are being affected by this so called timing chain issue. I took my 2013 328XI for regular tune up, after picking it up I didn't get down the road a mile and a catastrophic failure. I was charged $4200.00 for the trouble shooting to find it was the timing chain. Repaired the timing chain at Baron BMW in Kansas City $5200.00 so that 3 days later another catastrophic failure! "The engine!" and they want $15,000 to repair! I am sick with it, something needs to be done immediately... I just paid the car off so not to have a car payment another $10,000.00. When will the madness end? Who can we contact to hold BMW responsible for this, enough is enough!!

Timing chain 2014 x3 72000miles
After spending 6,500. On everything but the timing chain bc drive train warnings came on , 4tows to dealership…then the timing chain broke and I thought I was going to die . Dead stop on a 5 lane highway. When I requested my records they added in red that they had recommended replacing timing chain.. NO SUCH recommendations were on records until added after chain broke. Then they said 6,500 more to replace motor and couldn’t guarantee a new motor bc it’s a problem with all the motors but no recalls…. I would love to sue bmw or have it fixed for free with a warranty..my email is rosegrandy@ymail.com if anyone has a solution. The suv has been parked for 3 years now.

I toO have been having multiple problems with my 2013 BMW X3. The timing chain broke It had to many miles to get paid from class action law suit. Which I think is dumb. Because, the mileage is not whats causing the problem its the TIMING CHAIN. My check engine light is on. I have failed 2 inspections the last 2 years. This vehicle has been in the shop multiple times and costing $$$$$$$$ to figure out what the problem is. Now they have a recall for emissions problem. And I think that might be the issue for some of your vehicle's. How do we get the monies back that we have spent trying to repair these vehicles that we PAID so much money to purchase. Rochester NY

Timing Chain Failure
I purchased a 2013 528i BMWon January 26, 2022 and March 14 2022 I had a Drive Train Failure. BMW dealer told me it's the timing chain Failure that caused it now I need a new motor which they priced for$17,000. They can't help me and I just brought it and now I'm stuck with this car for 5years because I'm making payments on this car. What can we do? How can we get together and demand justice here? Someone. Anyone reach out to me if you have any answers.

BMW HVAC issues
I owned a 2008 BMW 328i and at 55k one month after warranty has expired the AC stopped working. AC condenser was leaking and had to be replaced. BMW quoted just under $3000 to repair this issue. After talking to BMW mechanics I found out that this is a common and ongoing problem especially in warm climates. This design flaw can also be found in newer BMWs... I learned my lesson and now only drive Toyotas

Timing chain failure
Same thing for my BMW 2013 x3… dealership never mentioned anything about lawsuit until I was 9 thousand miles past the warranty. Total loss of vehicle!!! BMW should be ashamed to have produced such terrible vehicles and then turn their backs when problems arise. This has cost me more than just a vehicle but my job, my freedom and my future!!! All my savings spent on a hunk of JUNK!

Timing chain needs to be replaced
My BMW 2014 528i needs new timing chain at 30,000. Thanks for not sending me any notifications BMW. Ridiculous that the class action settlement is now closed regarding this issue. Why wasn’t this a recall?!?! $7,000 repair. Seriously? Never again will I buy a BMW. Really sad that they don’t take care of their customers.

Timing Chain 2013 528i
Driving down a Texas highway I heard the indicator warning and seen Drivetrain failure on the dashboard. Then the car just stopped and won’t start, a broken timing chain. The crankshaft won’t even turn . Is their any lawsuits because the price for these Vehicles I would think Bmw would done better than this.

Timing chain failure caused engine damage
112,000 and I now have a hunk of metal needing an engine. I was never notified of the class action lawsuit or settlement and customer relations is absolutely no help. I was quoted roughly $12,000 to replace engine. I am absolutely disgusted with BMW. I thought they made dependable vehicles but I was wrong.
