Like most other vehicles, the Ford Fiesta was released with the expectation that it would be a safe and reliable car. However, as with all vehicles, problems can show up, some of which make them risky to drive. When this happens, a recall might be issued.

Are there any Ford Fiesta clutch recalls?

As of September 2020, no. However, there are several customer complaints about the transmission.

Additional recalls you should know about:

  • Improper plating on fuel pump may result in stall
  • Fuel tank may leak
  • Engine cylinder head may leak oil
  • Doors may open while driving

Here, we will look at each of the above Ford Fiesta recalls and discuss a few concerns about the vehicle’s transmission and clutch.

Clutch Complaints for the Ford Fiesta

Customer complaints have been filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for problems with the vehicle’s clutch and transmission. These are noted on the Ford Fiesta models from 2011 through 2016 (as well as on Ford Focus models).

In these vehicles, the PowerShift transmission features a six-speed dual-clutch automatic setup. Customers have noted numerous concerns, including the gearbox stumbling and roughly shifting. Some also noted hesitation when the accelerator is depressed.

Shuddering was noted. In many of these cases, customers stated their transmission as a whole had to be replaced prematurely due to concerns.

Improper Plating on Fuel Pump May Result in Stall

NHTSA Recall ID: 15V005000

In January of 2015, Ford issued a recall on the 2014 and 2015 Ford Fiesta vehicles that were made between April 10, 2014 and June 17, 2014.

In these vehicles, there is improper nickel plating located on the interior components of the fuel pump. If this is present, it can cause the fuel pump to stop operating.

In situations where this improper material is present, it can lead to the fuel pump suddenly failing. This causes the vehicle to stall out because the engine is not getting the fuel it needs to operate properly.

There is generally no warning. This leads to an increased risk of a crash occurring.

Ford let owners know of the problem. They then had dealerships bring the vehicles in for replacement of the fuel pump. This began in February of 2015.

Fuel Tank May Leak

NHTSA Recall ID: 14V402000

In this recall, the company recalled the 2014 Ford Fiesta vehicles made between October 15, 2013 and February 27, 2014. In these vehicles, there is a manufacturing error present in the fuel tank’s design. This can lead to the fuel tank leaking.

The key problem is that if the fuel tank leaks, it becomes a fire risk. It can also cause the car to run out of fuel, stalling it, and increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford alerted drivers to this and then had dealerships replace the fuel tank. This work began in July of 2014.

Engine Cylinder Head May Leak Oil

NHTSA Recall ID: 17V209000

Ford issued a recall related to the 2014 and 2015 Ford Fiesta ST vehicles with a 1.6L GTDI engine. This vehicle recall was issued in March of 2017. In these vehicles, a problem with the engine cooling can lead to concerns while driving.

Specifically, if these cars are driven without the right amount of coolant in the engine cooling system, this may cause damage. The engine cylinder head may overheat, leak oil, and crack.

In situations where this occurs and the cylinder head cracks and leaks oil, it creates the risk that oil can come into contact with the exhaust components. It may also come in contact with the hot engine itself. This increases the risk of a fire.

Ford alerted owners. They then installed a coolant level sensor in the system. They updated software and hardware as well. This helps to minimize the risk of the lack of coolant occurring.

Doors May Open While Driving

NHTSA Recall ID: 20V331000

Ford recalled the 2011 through 2014 Fiesta vehicles for a problem with door latches and links. This recall, issued in June of 2020, relates to previous recalls (15V-246, 16V-643, and 17V-210).

In these vehicles, repairs took place on the cars but were not done properly. The problem relates to a component located within the door latches that may break. This makes it hard for the doors to latch properly.

Over time, when this happens, it may lead to the driver or passenger assuming the car door is safely shut when it is not. This means that, once the car is in motion, the door can open. This increases the risk of injury.

Ford alerted owners and had the repairs completed by dealerships by replacing the side door latches as needed. Dealers inspected vehicles for a latch date code to confirm if a repair was needed. These repairs started in July of 2020.

How to Handle an Open Recall on the Ford Fiesta

Even though there are no recalls on the Ford Fiesta clutch right now, that could change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) can help you stay up to date on these.

Visit the website. Enter your VIN into the system. This produces a list of all recalls related to the vehicle. That includes all recalls still pending and in need of repairs.

If you do not have a VIN, enter the make, model, and year of the vehicle. This can help you if you are planning to buy a pre-owned vehicle and want to stay up to date on recalls.

If there are recalls, contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673 to learn more. Ford can also tell you how to schedule repairs.
