What kind of battery does a BMW key fob take?

Depending on the model and year, BMW vehicles with the Comfort Access key fob use either a CR2032 or CR 2450 battery. Many BMWs require the CR2032 battery, including Series 1, 3, 5, and 7, as well as the X3 and X6.

Where Can I Find the Right Key Fob Battery, and How Much Will it Cost?

The CR2032 and CR2450 are common 3-volt lithium batteries available from most any place that sells batteries. They typically sell in packs of 2, 4, 5, 8, or 10 batteries and are available in bulk purchases from online retailers. Generally, the overall cost is lower when buying in bulk.

Major battery brands tend to carry a higher purchase price for all types of batteries, including the CR2032 and CR2450. Expect to pay from $7 to $9 for a four-pack of fob batteries from leading brands.

The same four batteries can cost as little as $4 to $5 from a store brand. Careful price-comparison shopping with lesser-known battery competitors can reveal costs of less than $7 for a 20-pack of batteries.

When it’s time to replace your waning or dead BMW key fob battery with the brand-new one you’ve purchased, the steps are reasonably easy. Also known as a ‘coin battery’ because it’s shaped like a round nickel, it pops in and out within a few minutes.

  • Step 1: Find the tab on the key fob that releases the inside valet key. This tab sits on either the bottom or side of the fob. Press the tab and release the key.
  • Step 2: After removing the key, look for the access port hiding the battery. You’ll need a flat screwdriver or similar tool to take off the cover and expose the key battery.
  • Step 3: With the cover removed, you’ll be able to remove the non-operational battery. Just pop it out with your fingers or with the tip of the screwdriver, if necessary.
  • Step 4: The final step is the easiest — slide the new battery into the empty slot.

After reassembling the cover and placing the valet key back into place, you now have a fully functional key fob battery for your BMW vehicle. Drive on!
