Dodge does its best to make safe cars, but safety issues can arise. While there are a number of Avenger safety recalls, there aren’t any 2009 Dodge Avenger clockspring recalls. The 2009 Dodge Avenger recalls are for its instrument cluster and fuel pump module, and powertrain control module (PCM).

Has Dodge issued any safety recalls for the 2009 Avenger Clockspring?

As of September 2020, there weren’t any Dodge recalls for the clockspring and driver’s frontal airbag system. 2009 Avenger owners have lodged complaints about their airbags and warning lights.

What is a Clockspring in Dodge Avenger and Other Dodge Cars?

The clockspring is located inside your steering wheel. It’s a special type of rotary connector that allows you to turn the steering wheel while it maintains a connection between the steering wheel airbag, the horn, and the rest of the car’s electrical system.

How Can I Tell if My 2009 Avenger Has a Faulty Clockspring?

If the clockspring has problems, one of the main signs is that the SRS/Airbag light will go on. You could also have problems honking your horn, and you could hear noises inside your steering wheel as you turn.

Have there Been Complaints about the 2009 Dodge Avenger Clocksprings?

Yes, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has several complaints that could be related to the 2009 Avenger’s clockspring.

One owner reported in 2018 that his 09 Avenger’s airbag warning light would come off and on, beeping, and sometimes stay lit for a long time.

Another owner of a 2009 Dodge Avenger from Wisconsin reported that in 2017, his airbags blew up when a parking company bumped his vehicle at one mph.

In 2016, a 2009 Avenger owner said that his airbag light went off and on and made an airbag sound. The light and sound occurred primarily during left turns. The owner also heard a spring noise behind the steering wheel when moving it in either direction.

Other drivers of 2009 Avengers were in crashes where their airbags didn’t deploy. Later, after repairs, they said that their airbag warning lights were illuminating, but dealers were unable to find the cause or make the repair.

In 2011, the driver of a 2009 Avenger said that they were coming up to speed on the highway when their driver and passenger-side airbags deployed, leading to a non-injury accident.

However, the owner said that if they hadn’t been lucky enough to come to a safe stop, they or their passenger could have been injured or killed.

An owner of a 2010 Dodge Avenger with over 80,000 miles noticed that the check engine light came on. The initial diagnosis said the crankshaft sensor should be replaced. The owner had the work completed, but the check engine light came on a second time and the engine started knocking.

Has There Been a Clockspring Recall for Dodge Vehicles?

Yes, Chrysler has issued clockspring recalls for Dodge and other Chrysler vehicles made between 1998 and 2000.

The Dodge Caravan is affected, not Dodge Avenger. FCA has also issued clockspring recalls for Jeep Wrangler 2007-2010 clock springs and about 320,000 Dodge Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, and 4500 trucks made between 2012 and 2014.

These recalls are related to steering wheel harnesses and the clockspring. They can both cause accidental deployment of the driver’s frontal airbag. This is an obvious accident risk, and dealers will replace the wire harness or clockspring at no charge.

How Should I Deal with an Open Recall on a 2009 Dodge Avenger?

Although there aren’t any clockspring recalls for 2009 Dodge Avengers, you can check to see if your vehicle is covered by another recall using the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) recall checking tool. You’ll need to enter your VIN to find out exactly which recalls could cover your Avenger.

Mopar also has its own recall site which will let you look for a recall and chat with a virtual assistant.

Chrysler recalled over 700 2009 Dodge Avengers and other models because of problems with the powertrain control module (PCM).

Also, 91 2009 Avengers with 2.4L engines could have fuel pump modules overstating the amount of gas the car has. Dealers will replace the PCM or fuel pump module for free.

If you’re not sure about which repairs your Avenger or one, you’re interested in buying has had, you can learn more from the NHTSA’s recall website. Mopar also offers its own checking tool.
