Dodge Caravan Transmission Problems to Know of

Red 2020 Dodge Caravan From Front-Driver Side

A great van is a fantastic addition to any family. The Dodge Caravan makes it easy to haul your entire crew and carry a ton of other cargo as well. The Dodge Caravan, no matter how great it is, does have some transmission issues.

What are some common Dodge Caravan transmission problems?

  • Transmission is delayed when it comes to shifting which makes it difficult to shift the van from one gear to another
  • Loss of power when driving as the transmission loses power overall
  • Vehicle cannot accelerate or does not accelerate over about 5 miles per hour after loss of power in the transmission

About the Dodge Caravan

This is an American classic for sure, the first Dodge Caravan rolled off the production line in the year 1984 and was marketed as a family van that allowed the entire family to have enough room to ride comfortably. It was marketed to families with multiple children that would need to get from place to place and that may have a great deal of cargo as well. The Caravan has been part of a class of American vehicles that have stood the test of time and only gotten better with age.

Common Transmission Issues with the Dodge Caravan

As a rule, the Caravan does not have a ton of issues that have been reported. One of the most common, however, is transmission issues. The transmission is a critical part of the internal combustion engine, and without it, the car is not going to go anywhere. These transmission problems are not super difficult to handle and are not necessarily something that is going to be a deal-breaker when it comes to buying a Caravan.

Delayed Gear Shifting

The most common reported problem was that the shift from one gear to another was delayed in the transmission. Drivers reported that it was hard to shift from one gear to another and that the delay was likely to cause the vehicle to shudder or to hesitate. It was found upon further investigation by Dodge that the problem was likely a result of a snap ring that was not properly fastened which led to extra weight on the drum which can then cause premature wear and tear.

The solution for this issue was to rebuild the transmission and to make sure that the ring on the drum was updated and that it was also fastened properly. This was not ever part of a recall and was not ever made into an official inquiry.

Loss of Power While Driving

Other drivers reported that their Dodge Caravan lost power while they were driving. They reported that that the vehicle would be driving as usual and would then lose power rapidly and the van would then either stop completely or would not allow the vehicle to accelerate back to normal driving speeds. The driver also stated that it felt like the vehicle had shifted into neutral and that they were then not able to get it back up to driving speeds which made them feel unsafe driving.

Vehicle Will not Accelerate

Still another reported issue was that the vehicle lost power and would not accelerate even after the car was shut off and allowed time to sit. Some drivers reported that the vehicle would start as usual and would rev but that it would then not shift into drive and would not drive at all. The driver also stated that when the car lost power, they were not able to drive at all and that they felt it was a huge safety issue. Some drivers found that the transmission pump was the issue and that it was not properly pumping transmission fluid through the transmission, while others found that it was a fundamental issue with the construction of the transmission itself.

What to do Before Buying

There are a few steps that you can do to help prepare you for buying a Dodge Caravan — or any vehicle for that matter. Taking the time to learn about possible issues that come with a Dodge Caravan and the potentially faulty transmission is a great place to start. Vehicle History is a wonderful resource when it comes to finding the right vehicle for you and learning about your current vehicle.

Transmission mystery
2002 Dodge Caravan e-c model, 4-cylinder with 5-speed transmission. Bought new Dec. 31, 2001. My most reliable car until June of 2022, when I started noticing brief losses of power, like a spark plug missing intermittently. Had the transmission fluid flushed, but the problem persisted. Ordered and installed a new transmission in January, 2023, at 159,000 miles, but within a few hundred miles the hesitation resumed. On a road trip the transmission started slipping in and out of gear when I hit the highway, with the engine racing madly. Took it back to my regular garage, where the transmission was replaced, and the echanic reset the idle memory (whatever that means). It ran well for another thousand miles except for slipping and lugging in 1st and 2nd gear when the car was cold. But today (February 13, 2024) I took a 25-mile trip and by the time I reached my destination the transmission was slipping again. It continued to slip most of the way home, with increasing frequency, and I wasn't sure it would make it up my hill. When I stopped to back into my driveway, the engine stalled. There it sits. I may try it again for a short trip, but either the replacement transmission was as bad as the old one or there's something else wrong that no one can deduce.

Transmission pump went out causing transmission pump to go out.
While on vacation hundreds of miles from home while stopped in traffic on the highway our 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan wouldn’t go when the traffic started to move. We had it towed to the dodge dealership thinking that it had a hundred thousand mile warranty on the drivetrane only for them to tell us that the transmission pump went out causing the transmission to go out and that the transmission wasn’t repairable and needed replaced with a new transmission and pump and that the van was just within a few thousand miles of being over the warranty mileage and that it would cost $7,300.00 to replace. There was no sign of the pump being out or any transmission problem at all. I feel that there is a defect in dodge’s system on this van some where that it somehow didn’t alert us that something was wrong, maybe a bad sensor or something, and feel like dodge should fit the bill on this with as many others having the same problem. I sure am not paying that amount of money to have them repair it so I am having it towed to a transmission repair place that still quoted me half of that amount but still feel like if there wasn’t a defect in their system that they should be responsible for the repair cost and should have to recall them.

Sudden Transmission Failure is Life Threatening
Sudden transmission failure on the interstate put me and all the people in vehicles around me in a life-threatening situation. Vehicle failed and lost automotive power SUDDENLY with absolutely NO WARNING. No check engine light, no low pressure alert, NOTHING. Suddenly a whining sound and then total loss of forward power. Thankfully, I initiated my hazards immediately and all those around me could see something wrong as my van rapidly and suddenly began to Other drivers were alert enough to slam on their brakes and allow me to move over safely and out of travel lanes, but this could have been a disaster. Chrysler "customer care" feels they have absolutely no responsibility in this matter. This vehicle had only 58,097 miles on it when this incident occurred, and this vehicle has been kept with maintenance. The transmission was completely rebuilt, and even the service technician stated that this is NOT the first time he has seen this with this specific model vehicle. The incident was disturbing enough, but what's more disturbing and upsetting is the absolute failure of Chrysler to attempt to make any type of recompense for this product failure which could potentially cost people thier lives.

Turn off the engine.
Well, we were driving on the freeway. We suddenly heard a bigdownshift, and then the RPMs revved up really high so we had to get off of the road quickly. No matter what we did. We couldn’t speed up past 40 without the RPMs going to high. We found out through the owners manual that we had a manual shift option in in this fan. On the display board next to the D there was a plus and minus icon.apparently where your shifter is on Drive you can push it to the left to lock in the manual option. We had not done this but somehow the computer got the idea that we had. Maybe we went over a bump or something? After trying many things to get out of this mode, we, we finally just turned off the ignition for a couple of minutes. That fixed the problem! We were so grateful because we were on our way next to the dealership for most likely a very pricey repair that was unnecessary.

Most reliable vehicle I have ever owned . Change fluids filters at recommended intervals -don't forget transmission .No major repairs in 13 years =215,000+ miles .I Have replaced 1 alternator ,1 water pump ,engine mount, brakes ,common front suspension parts 1 time, headlights due to clarity ,1 power window motor, rotors , tires and battery's . Brakes pads usually last about 40,000 miles and rotors about 80,000 .Never owned an every day driver this long with great reliability ,Safety, comfort and power everything -1 tow because I ignored battery and sensed it was not cranking like it should -my fault . Highly Recommend ! Current issues-rust and headliner sagging -runs great 18 - 25 mpg -3.8l gets better fuel economy .

Transmission needed replacing at 91,707miles
I own a 2019 Dodge caravan. Had noticed 2 months prior to breaking down that minor slipping was happening, mostly during inclines. Was taking children to school, van was driving great, made a pit stop. Pulling back onto highway, I noticed a whinning noise that got louder with acceleration. Pulled into a parking lot to listen, while in park the van continued to make a whinning noise. Proceeded to take children to school and shifting became harder for the van. After stopping at multiple red lights accereration was extremely delayed as if it was shifting into neutral. Ended up coasting into a gas station because the van would no longer drive. Wishing now that I had read reviews before purchasing.

Transmission problems
I have a 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan. It started acting up while driving, shuttering, and acting like the transmission was slipping. One incident I was driving my 5 children to school, the van started shaking while decelerating while I was slowing down to go in the turning lane. Then the car totally shut off while driving. I almost hit the car in front of me, I had to go in the turning lane to avoid accident. Then the van restarted after. Nothing but problems with this van. Not a safe vehicle, no recalls and no engine lights on, this van only has 64, 000 miles. To the transmission place I go. I noticed some other people have the same problem, this should be a recalled vehicle.

Transmission needs replacing
2017 grand caravan transmission went out today. Needs new transmission. No lights or warning, just wouldn’t accelerate. I bought it 3 years ago with 90k miles on it. I take good care of it, drive daily for work and now looking at $6,000 or more to get it running. Never had a transmission go out in a 5 year old vehicle. Really disappointing and frustrating. Won’t be buying dodge or Chrysler again.

Transmission
I am on my 4th Grand Caravan. I have had no issues before so I am taken aback that 4 years and 117,000 kilometers in, my 2018 needs a new or rebuilt transmission. I cannot buy another one after this, that is simply far too unreliable. This should be a recall issue.

Transmission
People giving this vehicle a good review will change their tune once they have experienced the inevitable transmission failure. 2015 with low mileage dead on the road, no help from dodge. Never buying another dodge/chrysler product ever!

Love the 2003 Caravan, hate the unnecessary issues with transmission and suspension.
The transmission lags, and actually has trouble going into reverse gear. The suspension issues seem to be biggest, but transmission keeps me concerned for the long-term running of vehicle. I heard they are known for this problem.

Transmission went out. I love caravan but this one is a lemon so is the other one.
At 80000 miles trans not working on my 2016 dodge grand caravan. This is the second caravan i owned and transmission went out on both vehicles. WHY THERE IS NO RECALL ON ALL CARAVAN WITH TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS????????

2000 Caravan has been reliable for the past 10 years.
I don't like that the transmission slips into neutral from time to time and there's nothing you can do except wait for it to slip back. Only happens the first 3 minutes of driving and its random.

2002 Caravan is a great car for families. Lots of seating and storage.
It's a great vehicle, but has had its issues. We have had to replace the transmission and air conditioning compressor, as well as various minor repairs.

2005 Caravan is great for an active family.
It's been dependable for awhile but I think the transmission is going, we moved to an area with a lot of hills and mountains and it doesn't like it.

2005 Dodge caravan, great to drive yet easy on the pocketbook!
The only issue that I have run into is to replace the alternator and transmission. Other than that, I haven't had any problems with the caravan.

2004 Caravan is a comfortable family vehicle.
The transmission had to be rebuilt at 140,000 miles. Repairs are fairly easy to make since the engine compartment is not too compact.
