The Dodge Ram dates all the way back to 1981. It has since become one of the biggest names in the pickup industry. However, even the greats have issues.
Are there any Dodge Ram rack and pinion recalls?
Yes, the Dodge Ram has had several recalls over the years. And while the Ram is a great truck, it has had its fair share of recalls with the latest one occurring on the 2019 Dodge Ram 1500.
How Many Dodge Ram Rack and Pinion Recalls Have There Been?
We found Dodge Ram rack and pinion problems dated back as far as 2002. There were only a few years between 2002 and 2020 that didn’t reflect any rack and pinion issues. However, not all of those Dodge Ram rack and pinion problems resulted in a recall.
Here are the most recent Dodge Ram rack and pinion recalls.
- A 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 rack and pinion recall

- A 2010 and 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 rack and pinion recall on certain vehicles
Now let’s talk about these Dodge Ram rack and pinion recalls in a little more detail.
What will we cover? How it affects the vehicle, which models were affected, what may happen if it’s ignored, and how to get it resolved.
2019 Dodge Ram 1500 Rack and Pinion Recall
NHTSA Recall ID: 19V-812
This recall was issued on November 14, 2019. All (193) 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 models were potentially affected by this recall.
The part noted for this recall is the electric rack and pinion gear assembly. Some of these gear assemblies were built with a contaminated power steering gear and could short circuit. This may result in an intermittent loss of the power steering assist, making the steering at lower speeds difficult.
Unfortunately, there are no indicators or warnings to alert the driver of a problem.
The fix? The contaminated electric power steering gear assembly will need to be replaced with one that isn’t contaminated.
2015 and 2016 Dodge Ram 1500 Rack and Pinion Recall on Certain Vehicles
NHTSA Recall ID: 16V-167
This recall was issued on May 10, 2016, potentially affecting only 5% or approximately 442 of all 2015 and 2016 Dodge Ram 1500s.
The part noted in this recall was the electric power steering control circuit board. During a specific single one day production run the top side of the electric power steering circuit boards were contaminated causing the circuit boards to malfunction.
If this issue is not fixed, the contamination on the circuit board could cause some of the control circuit components to short out resulting in an intermittent or permanent loss of the vehicle’s power steering which could cause an accident.
There are a few warning signs that could indicate a problem. The driver might notice the steering wheel getting harder to turn at low speeds along with an illuminated Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) on the dashboard.
To resolve this issue, the dealer will need to replace the electric power steering for all affected vehicles.
2010 and 2011 Ram 1500 Rack and Pinion Recall
NHTSA Recall ID: 10V-616
This recall was issued on December 10, 2010, potentially affecting 76,122 2010 and 2011 Dodge Ram 1500s; this issue also affects the brake system.
The recalled vehicles include those equipped with a diesel engine and a hydroboost brake system.
This particular system might be equipped with a power steering reservoir cap that produces excessive vent pressure levels that make the brake pedals slow to return. The brake system uses the power steering pressure for brake assist.
The part noted in this recall was the power steering hydraulic power assist.
If not fixed, the brake lights that don’t extinguish quickly enough could increase the chances of an accident.
There don’t appear to be any indicators or warnings that alert the driver of a problem.
To resolve this issue, the dealer will replace the power steering reservoir cap on all affected vehicles.
