Have you been trying to find out if there are any Dodge Ram recalls before deciding if that’s the truck for you?
Well, look no further because we’ve got you covered.
The Dodge Ram has been a well-respected truck for many years; however, Dodge has experienced some bumps in the road when it comes to recalls, but so have all the other brands.
How many Dodge Ram recalls have there been in the last 10 years?
There have been many Dodge Ram recalls in the last 10 years. Here is a small sampling of some of the more serious ones on record:
- Dodge Ram airbag recall
- Dodge Ram cruise control recall
- Unexpected airbag deployment recall
- Unintended rollaway recall
Now let’s go into a little more detail about these Dodge Ram recalls.
We’ll give you all the information that’s available about each recall such as the year models and how those vehicles were affected. We will also tell you what could happen if the recall issues aren’t fixed and what repairs are required to fix them.
Dodge Ram Airbag Recall
NHTSA Recall ID: 17V-302
This recall was issued on May 9, 2017, and it potentially affected more than one million vehicles, which is 100% of all Dodge Ram 1500 and 2500 model years 2013-2016 and the Dodge Ram 3500 model years 2014-2016.
The part noted in this recall is the airbag. Some driving conditions (rough terrain, objects hitting vehicles, etc.) could cause the roll rate sensor to activate a diagnostic trouble code. This prevents the component from being able to sense a vehicle rollover accident.
If not repaired, this issue could prevent the rollover side curtain airbag and seat pretensioner from deploying due to it being disabled by the diagnostic trouble code.
Unfortunately, there are no indicators or warnings to alert the driver that this component is defective.
To remedy this issue, the dealer will reflash the occupant restraint controller in order to extend the default length of time on the roll rate sensor diagnostic trouble code.
Dodge Ram Cruise Control Recall
NHTSA Recall ID: 18V-332
The part noted in this recall is the powertrain control module. This issue creates a problem that won’t allow the cruise control to be turned off despite repeated attempts. This only happens if a short circuit occurs within the vehicle’s wiring.
The issue could potentially happen when trying to disengage the cruise control either by pressing the brake pedal or by manually turning it off.
If not repaired, this issue could continue the current cruise control speed or even accelerate the vehicle after the driver has attempted to turn it off which increases the chances of an accident.
Unfortunately, there are no indicators or warnings to alert the driver about this problem.
To repair this recall, the dealer will do a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module.
If you have one of these model vehicles and haven’t had this recall repaired, it’s recommended that you not use the cruise control feature until it has been fixed.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
If you should happen to experience this recall issue and can’t turn off the cruise control while driving, try applying the brakes firmly and steadily while shifting the transmission into neutral and putting the vehicle into Park after it has stopped.
Dodge Ram Unexpected Airbag Deployment Recall
NHTSA Recall ID: 15V-460
This recall was issued on July 22, 2015, and potentially affected 667,441 vehicles. The year models affected were the 2013-2015 Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks.
The parts noted in this recall were the airbags and seatbelts. The problem involved overly sensitive side impact sensor calibrations. This issue causes the side and seat airbags to deploy unexpectedly and the seatbelt pretensioners to possibly activate.
Unfortunately, there are no indicators or warnings to alert the driver about this problem.
To fix this recall, the dealer would need to update the Occupant Restraint Control module calibration.
Dodge Ram Unintentional Rollaway Recall
NHTSA Recall IDs: 17V-821 – 18V-100
These related recalls were issued on December 20, 2017 and February 7, 2018. The combined recalls potentially affected 1,663,336 vehicles. There were 11 specific models between 2009 and 2018 affected by this recall.
The part noted in these recalls was the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI). The problem occurs when the BTSI is engaged for prolonged periods of time. This causes the temperature to rise which degrades and melts the plastic housing.
This results in the locking pin sticking in the open position and the transmission being able to be shifted out of the Park position without the key being in the ignition or the brake pedal being pressed.
If this issue is not fixed, it could result in the unintentional rollaway of the vehicle increasing the chances of an accident.
Unfortunately, there are no indicators or warnings to alert the driver prior to this issue occurring.
Both recalls state the remedy as “currently under development.” However, both recalls also state that FCA US will reimburse owners who have already paid for the cost of any repair that subsequently becomes the subject of field action.
So make sure you check your vehicle’s VIN periodically to see if it is affected by this or any other recalls as they develop.
