Whether you’re looking to buy a Ford Fiesta, or own your 3rd one, if you’re looking for recall information, you’ve come to the right place.
Are there any Ford Fiesta recalls?
The answer to this is yes, many that have spanned over that long period of manufacturing. Here is a look at some of the more recent recalls:
- Front brake may drag
- Doors may open while driving
- Engine cylinder head may leak oil
- Improper plating on fuel pump may result in stall
- Fuel tank may leak
Understanding the risks to any vehicle is important, especially if you are planning to purchase one.
Front Brake May Drag
NHTSA Recall ID: 19V629000
In August of 2019, Ford issued a recall for the front brakes and hydraulic system. This recall impacted some 2019 Ford Fiesta vehicles.
In them, the brake caliper may not have been manufactured with the proper assembly fluid. This can lead to the caliper’s rubber seals swelling up.
Should the rubber seals swell like this, it can lead to the brakes dragging. This may cause the brakes to overheat as well. It can put a driver at a higher risk of accidents as a result.
To fix this problem, Ford alerted owners of it. They then had dealerships flush the brake fluid. In some situations, the front brake calipers and brake hoses as needed. These repairs began in October of 2019.
Doors May Open While Driving
NHTSA Recall ID: 20V177000
In this recall, which was issued for the 2014 to 2015 Ford Fiesta vehicles sold or registered in certain states (Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, and Washington) as well as in other areas, regarding the door latches and locks.
A part inside the door latch may break in these vehicles, making it hard or impossible to latch the door properly. This may lead the driver to believe the door is locked when it is not. If that happens, and the vehicle is in motion, it can cause an increased risk of injury to those sitting on these seats.
Ford issued a recall for this by alerting owners. It then replaced the side door latches through its dealerships to rectify the problem.
Engine Cylinder Head May Leak Oil
NHTSA Recall ID: 17V209000
In March of 2017, Ford issued a recall on the 2014 and 2015 Fiesta ST for vehicles with a 1.6L GTDI engine. In some situations, a driver may start the vehicle and drive it without the right amount of coolant within the engine cooling system. If that happens, the engine cylinder can overheat, leak oil, or crack.
The recall, impacting both the cooling system and the engine itself, can lead to cylinder head cracks and oil leaks. If the leaks occur while the engine is hot, or if there are exhaust components nearby, this can increase the risk of fire and injury.
Ford alerted owners and had dealerships perform a repair that involved installing a new coolant level sensor. They also updated the associated hardware and software with the system. The repairs for these problems began in January of 2018.
Improper Plating on Fuel Pump May Result in Stall
NHTSA Recall ID: 15V005000
Some vehicles were recalled in January of 2015 due to a fuel system problem. This impacted 2014 and 2015 Ford Fiesta vehicles manufactured between April 10, 2014, through June 17, 2014. In these cars, there is improper nickel plating of some components present.
This can cause the fuel pump to fail.
In situations where this occurs, the fuel pump may fail to operate as it should, leading to the vehicle stalling out without any warning. This increases the likelihood of an accident occurring.
Ford alerted owners of this problem and issued a replacement fuel pump for all impacted vehicles.
Dealerships installed these free of charge beginning in February of 2015.
Fuel Tank May Leak
NHTSA Recall ID: 14V402000
Ford recalled some 2014 Ford Fiesta vehicles in July of 2014 over a problem with the fuel system. This recall was for just those vehicles manufactured between October 25, 2013, and February 27, 2014. In them, there is a manufacturing problem that can lead to the fuel tank leaking.
For those who have a vehicle made during this time, the fuel leak can occur randomly. If it happens, and there is an ignition source nearby, it can cause a fire to occur, increasing the risk of injury.
Ford alerted owners of affected vehicles. It then had the manufacturer replace the fuel tank on each one. These repairs began in July of 2014.
How Do You Handle an Open Recall on a Ford Fiesta?
Vehicle owners should stay up to date on recalls. You can do that by visiting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website. There, enter the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the vehicle you own. The site will produce a list of all recalls impacting the vehicle. It also provides a list of all pending recalls which still need repairs.
If you are thinking about buying a Ford Fiesta and do not have a VIN number yet, you can still find out about all applicable recalls on the NHTSA website. This time, enter the make, model, and year of the car to learn about all recalls related to that year.
Once you learn of any repairs necessary, be sure to contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673 to find out where to take the vehicle for repairs. Most often, this will be done at a local Ford dealership or authorized repair shop.
