Our cars these days have more warning lights than ever before. They let us know just about everything, even when the engine needs attention.

The Ford Transit has one such light: the engine management light, and we are going to let you know how to reset it.

How to reset the engine management light for a Ford Transit?

A simple series of steps that include turning the car to on and holding down the brake will reset the check engine light and turn it off for you.

As with most warning lights in your Ford Transit, there are a few steps that can be taken that will help to reset these lights so that you can go about your day and not have to worry about them. Most of these steps can be easily completed from your front drivers chair and take less than a few minutes to get done.

Why Is My Check Engine Light On?

The first thing you should do when trying to turn off a maintenance required or check engine light is to take a moment to determine why it might be on in the first place. There are a huge range of problems that might be causing this maintenance light to come on.

Your check engine light is associated with hundreds of different codes that are sent to your car’s computer. These codes all correspond to different problems that might be happening within your engine. Generally, when the problem that made the light come on is taken care of, the light will go off on its own.

The check engine light comes on for a whole host of different reasons. It could be something as simple as the gas cap is not sealing the gas tank properly, or it could be something more serious like the transmission is slipping and about to go out.

The only way to determine what exactly made the light come on is to take your car to a mechanic and have them read the codes and see what is causing the light.

Check engine lights are designed to let you know something wrong and so you can get it checked to keep your car running well. A check engine light is not a be-all-end-all when it comes to your vehicle, however. This light can just as easily be signifying something minor as it can something catastrophic.

How to Reset the Check Engine Light in a Ford Transit

Check Engine Warning Light

There are a few different ways that you can reset this light. The first is to take the car to a mechanic and have them run the codes and turn the light off manually. If this is not something that you can do, you can always turn off the check engine light on your own.

First, turn the engine on and then hold down both the brake and the accelerator at the same time for about 20 seconds. The light should then reset and turn off. If that does not work, repeat the mentioned steps then hold down just the brake pedal for an additional thirty seconds.

Again, if this does not work there are still other methods for turning off the engine management light.

You can turn the ignition off and on to help turn off the light. You should first turn the ignition on and wait a few seconds, turn it off then back on, off then back on. You should turn the engine on and off three times and the light should then turn off. This is an easy way to turn off the light that generally works.

If these do not work you might have a more serious issue with your engine that does need to be taken care of professionally. If the check engine light does not go off when you do any of the steps mentioned, you do need to take the time to get your car to a mechanic and see just what is making the light come on.

When the Check Engine Light Is Serious

When it comes to something like a check engine light, it is always serious, even when it is something simple. If you do have a check engine light that is on or when it keeps coming on even after it has been turned off, you may have a more pressing issue that needs the attention of a mechanic. If you have a check engine light and you can get to a mechanic, you should.

For those that have a car, it is always helpful to have good information on hand. Vehicle History is a wonderful resource if you want to learn more about your car and you want to keep on top of all things to do with your Ford Transit.

Engine management light and limp mode 1999 Ford Transir 2.6L manual
When the engine is at normal operating temp and running at idle the engine light comes on the engine also goes into limp mode (no Power) .I drive off until the revs reach over 1100 rpm turn the key off ( but not to lock the steering) depress the clutch, then turn the key back on without starting the engine then release the clutch ,the engine starts the light dissapears and you have full power again. If you can find some way to increase the idle speed above i think 900rpm the problem is solved (in a perculiar way) only problem is the accelerator pedal is linked electronically,if it was by cable it would be easy to adjust. Mystified but it works. If you do this method make sure your have a lot of clear road in front of you . I have fitted a reconditioned deisel pump but the problem is still the same Transit 1999 2.6l Banana turbo deisel 340000kms . Driving off with a cold engine you have full power untill you come to a stop or giveway and the engine idles you then have the problem .Find a way to increase the revs at idle. Regards Ray (NZ)

Do not run engine and press brake and fuel
You are literally telling people to have the engine running and brake and accelerator pedal pressed. DO NOT DO THIS. Key should be forward and engine should be off!! Really bad wording chosen there.
