GMC – the refined big brother to the Chevrolet lineup. Being part of the GM family has many advantages, however, it doesn’t make them immune to issues, as is the case with the ignition switch in some models.

Has GMC issued any ignition switch recalls?

Yes — several. Vehicles included in the ignition switch recall include the 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, 2007-2010 Saturn Sky, and the 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR.

The ignition switch problem can cause the vehicle to shut off while it’s in motion. While this is a huge danger in and of itself, the issue also causes airbags to fail in a crash, increasing the likelihood of driver and passenger injury.

Thankfully, this article will discuss the details of this recall, allowing you to learn more about what you need to do if your vehicle is affected by the recall, the potential ramifications of ignoring the recall, and what your dealer will do to remedy the problem.

Car Ignition Switch

Many GM vehicles contain the same ignition switch, which has proven time and again to be problematic. Drivers may experience complete vehicle shut off while the vehicle is in motion. In the event that the vehicle shuts off while driving, the airbags also will not work in the event of a crash.

If ignored, the likelihood of a crash becomes extremely high, as the vehicle shutoff happens with no warning, and may happen while driving at high speeds or in heavy traffic.

While the crash alone significantly increases the risk of driver and passenger injury or death, the fact that the airbags also will not deploy in the event of a crash makes injury or death nearly inevitable.

To remedy this problem, your GM dealer will replace the ignition switch
