When it comes to vehicle maintenance, it is important to stay on top of vehicle recalls and alerts. One great place to check for recalls and complaints about your particular vehicle is on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website.

Anyone with newer vehicle models, including the Honda Accord line of vehicles, needs to check regularly to see if any recalls or alerts have gone out on their vehicle.  Thankfully, as of now, there are no recalls for the newer Accords.

What issues should drivers be aware of for Accord vehicles in general? Compared to some vehicles, there are not that many serious problem reports or alerts for most of the newer models so far.  Here are some of the complaints and alerts that have been noted recently:

  • June 23, 2020 NHTSA ID Number: 11330435
    • Components: STRUCTURE- Paint Peeling
  • April 24, 2020 NHTSA ID Number: 11322211
    • Components: VISIBILITY – Window Fogging and Cracking
  • February 28, 2020 NHTSA ID Number: 11312002
    • Components: ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL- Dashboard Lights

If you are worried about whether or not your Accord has one of these issues, don’t stress. We are here to help you take the next step to getting any issues taken care of.

STRUCTURE – Paint Peeling

There have been a handful of reports about paint peeling off the frame of the vehicle. This peeling has not been linked to any damage or vandalism and is not believed to be associated with bad weathering or exposure. Most of the reports seem to be focused on the roof of the vehicle.

The area of peeling starts off relatively small but can quickly spread to cover a larger area. It tends to occur in patches scattered over the entire area that is peeling.

Owners with peeling paint that is believed to be associated with this problem and not attributed to any other cause can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 1-888-327-4236  or 1-800- 424-9153 (TTY). Honda services can also be contacted to address this issue at 1- 800- 999-1009.

VISIBILITY – Window Fogging and Cracking

A handful of reports have recently been filed for the Accord that deal with trouble keeping the windows from fogging up and obscuring visibility. There are also additional related reports of the windshield cracking when using the defogger while driving.

An assumed issue with the temperature controls prevents adequate defogging at times, and that can also lead to temperature fluctuations on the windshield that could, in some situations, lead to cracking.

Owners who have had trouble keeping their windshields clear or have had random cracking and breaking of the windshield can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 1-888-327-4236  or 1-800- 424-9153 (TTY). Honda services can also be contacted to address this issue at 1- 800- 999-1009.

ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL – Dashboard Lights

These reports describe random dashboard lights turning on, staying on, randomly running off, then turning back on again, or not illuminating at all. All dashboard lights or just a few seem to be affected at times when this issue is noted in an Accord vehicle.

Issues with dashboard alerts can lead to hazardous driving conditions. Not knowing if a system is actually in critical failure or not, or not being able to see an alert, could lead to a serious accident.

Owners who have any sort of dashboard issues that are not easily addressed by a Honda dealer are encouraged to contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 1-888-327-4236  or 1-800- 424-9153 (TTY). Honda services can also be contacted to address this issue at 1- 800- 999-1009.

How Should You Handle a Recall or Issue with a Newer Honda Accord?

Not sure if your Honda Accord has a recall or problem alert that you need to be aware of? Visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) site and enter the VIN (or the year, make, and model) into the form and hit submit. You will get a full listing of all known recalls and reports for that particular make and model.

The U.S. Department of Transportation can also be a valuable resource. You can find numbers to call and more information about how to get help addressing the issue if it is part of a recall or a recognized defect.

Here you can also find out about what to expect during the recall services, what your rights and duties are, and what you need to do to protect yourself when your vehicle is part of a recall or defect alert.

If you are buying a used newer Honda Accord, it is a good idea to check the Vehicle History so you know about any problems or concerns before you buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a Honda dealership take care of my recall?

Honda dealerships do take care of all recalls for free, Honda also does have some service centers that can handle recalls if you do not live near a dealership. You can contact Honda's customer service line at 1-800-999-1009 to find the nearest location to you.

It is important to get recalls on your Honda addressed promptly because they usually cover damaged components or issues with the safety systems in your vehicle. Getting these things fixed helps your car last longer, and makes it safer for you to drive.

If you are unsure if you have any recalls on your Honda you can also call the customer service number listed above with your VIN and they will let you know if there are any open recalls on your car. They also keep track of every car that they have fixed so you can find out if any recalls have been repaired in the past.

Does Honda charge for recalls?

Honda does not charge anything for recalls, every single recall that they issue will be handled professionally by a certified mechanic for free. When you take your car to a dealership or service center a trained technician will take care of replacing or repairing the component that is part of the recall for you and then they reach out to Honda directly to get their compensation when the repair is completed.

If you ever have a recall service done on your car and a Honda dealership tries to tell you that there is a fee you can contact Honda USA and let them know about it because all recalls are done for free. All brands handle recalls for free because they issue recalls for serious problems that need to be fixed.

It is in the brand's best interest to take care of cars when they find damaged components. Replacing parts can save them a lot in the long run compared to dealing with the negative backlash of having damaged cars.

What is Honda B maintenance?

Honda has different maintenance codes that come up on the dash to let you know you need to take your car in to get it serviced. Typically they use either an A or B code with a number after it to let you, and your technician, know what parts need to be replaced.

A B service is when you need to replace the engine oil, the oil filter, inspect the brakes, check the parking brake, and inspect any other components on your car. The A service is simpler and just calls to replace the engine oil, usually, the A service is much cheaper and faster than the B service.

There are also 6 numbers that are also associated with servicing which can include rotating tires, replacing timing belts, replacing transmission fluid, and replacing coolant. Honda has set these in your vehicle's com

I am religious about oil changes and after 50,000 miles my honda loses oil (1/4 quart) after every 1000 miles. Will not buy another Honda again. Dealer says this is normal.
