Honda Odyssey Misfire Recalls: Worth Your Worry?

Bob M
Jan 22, 2021

Ok, so you got talked into buying a minivan, cool, it’s a Honda Odyssey, that means something, right? And then it starts to misfire, make noises, and break down. Now you’re the owner of a minivan stranded on the side of the road. But hey, it’s a Honda.

Have there been any engine misfire recalls on the Honda Odyssey?

No. The NHTSA never identified the Honda Odyssey misfire problem as a safety issue, which is required for a safety recall to be issued. However, there was a major class action lawsuit against them about the misfires, ending in a 1.5 million settlement.

Silver 2021 Honda Odyssey From Driver Side

Keep reading to learn about the results of that lawsuit, and whether there is still any remedy for Honda Odyssey owners who’ve had to deal with engine misfires.

The Honda Odyssey (and Other Models) Misfire Problem

The problem with the Honda Odyssey and several other models started with the 6-cylinder engine with Variable Cylinder Management that debuted in several of its 2008 model vehicles.

This engine was equipped in many of the trim versions of the following vehicles over the next few years:

Many of the engines equipped with Variable Cylinder Management burned way too much oil. This resulted in the Honda Odyssey misfires that you may have heard of. It also caused the spark plugs in the engines to degrade much too quickly and resulted in costly engine repairs for Honda owners.

While this was never identified as a safety issue that could lead to injury or death (hence, no safety recall), it did lead to a major class action lawsuit.

Honda Odyssey Misfire Lawsuit and Settlement

Honda agreed to a settlement in federal court to resolve the case (Soto, et al v. Honda Motor Co.). The settlement wrapped up in October of 2013.

While Honda admitted to no wrongdoing as part of the agreement, the company did agree to fully compensate vehicle owners who had to pay out-of-pocket for engine repairs on all of the model years listed above.

Honda also extended the warranty for engine repairs on the affected vehicles to a period of 8 years.

Can You Be Compensated for Honda Odyssey Engine Repairs?

To be financially reimbursed for Honda Odyssey misfire repairs, all owners had to file a claim no later than April of 2014. So, unfortunately, that boat has sailed if you’re just learning about this now.

However, with the extended warranty for engine repairs, 2012 Honda Odyssey vehicles are still within the warranty window until the end of 2020.

Likewise, 2013 Honda Odyssey vehicles will be covered until the end of 2021. And again, that is only for Honda Odyssey vehicles equipped with the 6-cylinder engines with Variable Cylinder Management.

How to Check Your Honda Odyssey Against a Recall

If you’ve recently purchased a used Honda Odyssey and want to know if there are any safety recalls against it, you can search with your vehicle’s VIN number on the Honda Recall Lookup website.

Misfire need to replace piston rings and spark plugs 2012 Honda oddyssey
Bought my 2012 Honda odyssey in 2014 when the class action lawsuit was settled. Dealer didn’t say a word about it of course. Repeatedly changed spark plugs.Took vehicle to Honda dealership who told me piston rings need replaced in late 2022. Took it somewhere else and they said it was the alternator so got it replaced..Now vehicle had engine light blink then stay on then turn off. It’s early 2024 now and took it to Honda dealership to find out exactly what tge misfire was. It’s the piston rings!! Among other things my total quote for my 2012 vehicle with 14000 miles on it was 8,000 dollars!!!!?? Alone, its 3200 for piston ring job!! It’s not right! And how is it not a safety issue. My van felt like I lost power driving on a road with crazy drivers behind me pissed off for myslow acceleration. I had my 4 kids in the van! Never ever will buy a Honda again. The problem is across the board with other Honda models. They know it’s anissue and they won’t fix the defect VCM bc they will risk being fined for not being epa compliant. But they will push forward and screw their customers. Thank you Honda. You s**k. See my email below if you want to make it right!

Cylinder issue and spark plug
I started having the check engine light and computer code saying cylinder 1 was misfiring. I did have loss of power. Dealership said I needed a complete rebuild (June 2019). I ran two cans of sea foam and high test gas and changed the plugs. One month last same thing. I changed the plugs and ran sea foam again. I also was convinced the Honda Dealership was not putting in the correct oil. So-I started changing oil myself and using high quality filters (Castrol High mileage synthetic 0-w20). Change your oil at 50% life. It will save the plugs most likely. It did for me and I had to change plugs again in 2020 and October 2021. Ran the van from 168,000 (2019 original cylinder issue) to today 14 Feb 2023. Changed plugs today and ran sea foam through. I'm at 238,000 and suspect I'm on the last leg but dang I beat the odds. Once you change the plugs (First time is a bear) you'll get the hang of it.

2016 Odyssey misfire cylinder 2 again
I found this page after googling my Honda problem. I am so disappointed to see all these issues. I am very frustrated with my constant check engine light and system failure warnings. They started at about 90k and my mechanics are puzzled since it won't act up for them. It is terrifying to lose power on the interstate and drive so roughly that I am afraid my disabled son and I will be hit by another car. My 2004 Odyssey NEVER had any issues and it was traded at 197k. What can be done? I am headed back to the mechanic in the morning again. They puzzled over it for an hour today, drove it and nothing happened until I left with it. I am beginning to wonder about Honda quality now.

Variable Cylinder Maintenance System (Resolution)
The VCM system is known to cause excessive engine wear, leaky seals, and fouled plugs. There is a very easy solution to this problem. Install a device to disable VCM. I purchased a VCM Tuner for my 2014 Odyssey EX-L from vcmtuner.com. The installation took less than 10 minutes. Now my Odyssey has more power and drives much smoother. The VCM Tuner disables the VCM and ECON systems so the engine provides full power. Most testamonials say this device stops the plugs from being fouled and reduces or resolves oil burn. I would highly recommend this product before you get stuck with a 5k engine repair. Https://www.vcmtuner.com

Unnecessary repairs when dealership knew about the piston rings?
I've been very happy with my 2012 Odyssey now with over 200000km. The cylinder misfire started last year. The dealership charged me for a full engine tuneup, timing belt work, spark plug changes and a bunch of other engine work along with all the labor charges. This was last year. They obviously knew about this problem and the settlement. I still have the misfire problem and wondering if its still worth fixing when the van may not be worth the cost of repairs. Very disappointed with a dealership that would deliberately scam me when they could have fixed it right in the first place.

2015 Honda Odyssey and same problems with engine
Started running sluggish and dragging to start. Engine light came on had misfire. Turned off and engine light went off. After couple of days it happened again and was worse. Took to mechanic and computer indicated #3 coil misfired. Took 3 and switched it with 5 and engine light went out. Put back like it was and could not get check engine light to come back on. Was told would have to drive and wait to act up again. Starting to hesitate and run rough again. How do you find out about class action settlement?

2012 Honda Odyssey
It seems like everyone is having the same issue. I contacted the lawyer hope we can get another lawsuit. I have a 2012 Honda Odyssey at 60k miles. @nd time changing the spark plug in 3 months, now Honda Service in Stanford said Vehicle is Burning oil and they offered engine rebuild close to 4k. Honda should own this this is how you get repeated customers. I am thinking about selling all my Honda Cars and switching to Toyota.

Cylinder 3 misfire on 2012 Oddy
I am also experiencing this issue now. 2012 Oddy EX-L, 175k miles. Has loud knocking noise, very little power, and a P0303(cylinder 3 misfire) code. Mechanic is looking it over, and said the #3 spark plug is rusted, and seized inside the engine. I haven't gotten a repair quite just yet, but I'm not looking forward to it. I doubt there is anything Honda will do, but I'll throw my name out there anyways.

I just had this issue with my 2015 Honda Odyssey. $3,200 in repairs. I have contacted Honda customer service for help with a good will repair. Doesn't look good. However, if you pull up the old lawsuit online there are attorneys named who sued them before. I contacted one of them and it looks like they might do it again because Honda STILL hasn't fixed the exact same issue!!!!

Bought a 2015 Honda Odyssey back in April 2022 and 3 months later now has a check engine light code, cylinder 1 misfire. Just wondering if anyone has come across any recourse that Honda would cover the cost of repair? And any updated lawsuits? It's crazy how just googling and reading forums and a lot of people are having the same issues and Honda isn't doing anything about it.

Cylinder Misfire 2010 Ody
Had the same problem as everyone else, but did NOTgo to dealer. A friend who is a master mechanic could smell the burnt spark plug coil. Replaced it and everything went back to normal. I had also replaced the front Variable Valve Timing Solenoid = $150. Not sure how long it will last, but it’s a whole lot less than a ring job or engine rebuild.

I have the same misfire issue on my 2014 odyssey, and it going to cost me$4k to replace the cylinder ring, but all what I read is it will appear again in few months. I also had the paint pealing issue with my odyssey, and Honda refused to help repairing it because it recall time was over. I lost trust in Honda, and I will never buy a Honda again

Why only 8 years warranty extension
Have 2012 odyssey, it’s 180000 miles now. The check engine light starts flash and vehicle is shaking. Sometimes after I restarted the vehicle and everything looks OK. But after couple of days driving the lights will come back again. Dealer said it might be the piston ring issue. It will cost $4500-5000 to get it fixed. So disappointed Honda!

Misfire issue on 2016 Odyssey
I am also having cylinder misfire issues on my 2016 Odyssey. Dealer replaced cylinder 3 a year ago, and I just had to have the same cylinder replaced again. Now three weeks later, my check engine light just came on, and code shows cylinder 2 is misfiring. Perhaps it's time for another class action lawsuit for newer models of Odyssey.

Lawsuit
I have 2012 EX-L at 58,000 miles. I am running into exactly same issue (303 cylinder misfire). I have replaced ignition coil and spark plug last year and not running into the same issue. Honda should own it and fix it. I saw few messages from someone about new lawsuit. I want to join it. Would you please share details about attorney?

$4,800 later...new piston rings because of VCM
Does anyone know if you NEED the piston ring replacement IF you start driving with the VCM Tuner? Or is the VCM tuner only something that helps if there's not yet existing damage? Word around this is spreading like wildfire. Honda needs to OWN UP to this, this breach of trust is going to lead to losing MANY lifetime customers

Yes, I’m also still having this problem with a 2016 Odyssey. The dealer replaced piston rings at 50k miles and now needs to again (supposedly) at 61k mi 14 months later. Just out of warranty, quoting 4K. This is garbage.
