When you buy a Honda, regardless of whether it’s new or used, you typically expect the paint job to hold up over the years. Unfortunately, when OEM paint is improperly applied or when there are issues with the chemical composition of the paint, premature chipping and wear can occur.
Have there been any Honda paint recalls issued?
As of September 2020, no formal recalls have been issued on Honda paint jobs, although there have been widespread reports of paint defects on certain makes and models. Some of the most common include the 2010 Honda Civic and the 2018 Honda Accord.
Even though no formal recall notices have been issued on these models, you should be aware of some corrective actions Honda is taking if you’re experiencing any paint issues with your Honda vehicle. You might even be able to get your vehicle’s paint redone or touched up at no charge.
2010 Honda Civic: Peeling Paint
NHTSA Complaint ID: 11351854
Numerous complaints of peeling paint have been filed on the 2010 Honda Civic, including an NHTSA complaint dated August of 2020 that reported the paint began peeling off the entire body of the car within the first year of purchase.
This falls in line with another complaint (NHTSA ID: 11231124) that mentioned peeling paint off the car’s hood, trunk lid, and top fenders.
Another owner of a 2010 Civic reported in 2019 (NHTSA ID: 11204809) that the car’s paint began to fail and that Honda failed to fix the paint job under warranty. Instead, the owner reports that he or she was quoted $7,000 for a new paint job.
2018 Honda Accord: Chipping / Peeling Paint
NHTSA Complaint ID: 11344075
There are similar complaints on the 2018 Honda Accord, including one 2020 complaint about paint chipping and peeling from the vehicle’s roof, doors, hood, and even door handles. This owner reported that the 2018 Accord was parked inside an enclosed garage every night and in a private parking spot at work.
A similar complaint from June of 2020 (NHTSA ID: 11329790) supports this report; the owner claimed that the paint on the vehicle’s trunk, hood, door handles, and the bumper was corroding and rubbing off.
Are Paint Defects Covered Under Honda’s Warranty?
Although Honda has not formally recalled any vehicles due to these widespread paint defects, the manufacturer has acknowledged these issues and offered a remedy. Specifically, Honda has extended the existing paint warranty on its vehicles to seven years past the purchase date, regardless of mileage.
What does this mean for you? It means that if you drive a Honda vehicle with known paint defects, you may be able to have your vehicle partially or completely repainted at no charge. If you think this might apply to your vehicle, your best bet is to contact a Honda dealer for a repair request.
