How To Replace A Toyota Key Battery

You rely on your Toyota key fob every day, whether it’s to unlock doors, pop the trunk, or even start your vehicle. So, when your key fob battery suddenly goes dead, you’ll want to replace it as soon as possible.

What kind of battery does my Toyota key fob need?

Luckily, most Toyota key fobs take the CR2032 button cell battery. It’s the same type of battery you’ll find in calculators, wrist watches, small toys, and an assortment of medical and fitness devices.

You’ll not only learn where to find a quality replacement for your Toyota key fob battery, but we’ll also walk you through the steps of replacing your battery.

Finding a New Battery

Most big-box retailers and hardware stores keep CR2032 batteries in stock. You can find them near the front of most stores or in the battery section among the usual AA-size and AAA-size batteries. Some convenience stores may also carry CR2032 batteries, although this isn’t always a guarantee.

Not only are CR2032 batteries relatively easy to find, but they don’t cost that much, either. A single battery from a name brand like Duracell or Energizer will run you about $2.00, while a 2-pack could cost anywhere from $4.00 to $6.00.

You can stretch your budget by going for a generic or off-label CR2032 battery, which can sometimes be half the cost of a name-brand battery. However, keep in mind these batteries might not last as long or offer the same quality as their better-known counterparts.

Toyota gives you two ways to open your key fob case, depending on the type of key fob you have. For most key fobs, you’ll need to unfold or remove the metal ignition key and insert a flathead screwdriver into the vacated space to pry open the key fob cover.

On older Toyota key fobs, like those used on older Camrys or Corollas, there’s usually a notch where you can pry open the cover with a flathead screwdriver. If there’s a screw present, use a screwdriver to undo it and remove the cover.

Once you have the key fob open, you should see the circuit board and the CR2032 battery inside. All you’ll need to do is remove the old battery, make sure the connections are clean and insert the new battery. When you’re done, simply close everything back up.

Test your key fob to make sure the new battery is working properly. If not, double check the connections and clean them, if necessary. If you’re still having trouble using your key fob, get in touch with your nearest Toyota service department.
