Although its overall looks and spirit remained the same, they reworked the entire build from nose to tail, making it a smidge longer and taller, for starters. They also restyled the grille and lights but left the hood scoop unchanged.

Other changes centered around making it lighter and much steadier by:

  • Using aluminum parts to reduce its weight
  • Installing a fully redesigned rear axle
  • Upgrading the power steering system to electric

They even switched to the Prince powerplant and decided to ditch the supercharger in favor of a turbo on the S trim.

Getting the Most for Your Money with the S Trim

As is tradition on this model line, the S trim brings more power to the table with its upgraded Prince powerplant. This dual overhead cam 1.6L four-cylinder is plenty capable on its own, but they wanted to wring out every last bit of power to make the S truly formidable.

To do that, they equipped it with a twin-scroll turbocharger to bump up its output to 172 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. Then, they upgraded the automatic transmission to bring the RPMs all the way up to redline before initiating each shift. Of course, you can still get the six-speed manual gearbox, which was standard on prior Mini Cooper S model years.

With either combination, this car boogies up to 60 in just 6.2 seconds while making it look absolutely effortless. The sport-tuned suspension keeps everything well planted through the corners, despite its 64/36 front-to-rear weight ratio.

The looks match the sporty feel, giving you a car that inspires a quick look over your shoulder as you walk away. Despite all the appearance changes, they left the hood scoop front and center. They also equipped it with bigger rims, grippier tires, and a twin-outlet exhaust at the center of the rear bumper.
