If you want to get into your car quickly and lock up again later, you’ll need your Mercedes key fob in good working order. Unfortunately, the batteries can die at the most inopportune time. But, no worries; you can change them quite easily if you have the right battery.
What battery does the Mercedes key fob use?
Mercedes vehicles typically use either the chrome or smart key fob, which is powered by CR2025 3-volt batteries. Newer chrome remotes only need one battery, while smart key fobs and old chrome remotes need two. Changing the batteries is easy. Here’s how.
Where Can I Find the Right Battery and What Will it Cost?
Both the chrome and smart key fobs for Mercedes vehicles use the CR2025 3-volt battery. You can pick up a new one at your local home improvement store, office supply store, or even the supermarket. Just look near the other button batteries for the right one.

Steps for Changing the Battery in Mercedes Key Fobs
Although the key fobs are a bit different in looks, their battery-changing process is largely the same. Here’s what to do.
1. Get the Metal Key Out of the Way
To get the case open on all the key fob styles, you must remove the metal key altogether. Do that by sliding the release tab near the base of the metal key portion. Then, pull the key away from the case and set it to the side.
2. Pop Open the Case With a Screwdriver
Use a screwdriver and a light touch to separate the case into two pieces. The chrome remote cases have a slot you can use in the area where the metal key previously sat. The smart style has a slot on the opposite side of the case from the key.
Just put the tip of your screwdriver in that slot and gently pry it open to separate the case into two pieces. When done correctly, the case will open right up, so you can get to the battery with ease.
3. Remove and Replace the Battery
With the battery in sight, take a moment to note which way it’s facing. After that, use the tip of your screwdriver to lift the batteries out of their holders. Replace them with your new batteries and discard the old ones in a secure garbage can.
4. Reassemble the Case and Put the Key Back
The case pieces easily snap back together with just a little bit of pressure. Verify that both sides are lined up correctly, and then gently squeeze until you hear a click. You can then slide the key back in place and go test your key fob.
If your key fob works, congratulations; you successfully changed your battery and can move on with your day. If it doesn’t, then that doesn’t necessarily mean you did anything wrong.
You may have a problem with the key fob itself, which will require a trip to the dealership. Whether you have a 2015 SLS AMG or any other Mercedes, the dealership will likely be able to get you a new remote if needed.
