In these days of high Lexus owner expectations, the key FOB or remote key is a mainstay that requires as little mental or physical effort as possible. Unlike in the “old days” when we had to insert a metal key into the ignition, we have come to anticipate that simply pressing a button is all the effort that will be required to start our car.

What’s the best battery for a Lexus key fob?

Lexus key fob uses a standard CR2032 battery that can be found at your local camera shop, big-box store, and just about every convenience store in town.

How a Key Fob Works

The Lexus SmartAccess system allows you to open the trunk, unlock and lock doors, and start your car, all without having to take your key fob out of your pocket.

Sensors in the car can detect a signal from your fob, thus allowing you to open the doors with a simple touch on the door handle and start the car with a push of a button.

Replacing the Key Fob Battery

Your Lexus key fob uses a standard CR2032 battery that can be found at your local camera shop, big-box store, and just about every convenience store in town.

Here are the steps for changing your key fob battery:

  • Press the small button on the edge of your fob that allows you to remove the manual emergency key that is stored inside it.
  • Use a coin, paper clip, or flathead screwdriver to separate the bottom, top, and halves of the fob casing.
  • A small electronic circuit board holds the old battery that needs to be removed.
  • Remove the old battery and set the new battery in its place. Be sure the positive side faces upwards.
  • Return everything to its place, and you should be good to go.

What if the Key Fob Battery Dies?

The question must have arisen, “But what if my key fob battery dies after a day at the beach? How am I supposed to get home?

The good news is you can still drive to the store and get a new battery. If your fob battery is dead, the engine can be restarted by following these simple steps:

  • Push the start button at least five or more times.
  • When the green light flashes on the start button, touch your key fob on the start button.
  • A tone will sound, giving you 10 seconds to press the start button and start the car.
