Red 2020 Mazda CX-5 From Front-Driver Side

You want a car with a bit of room, ample functionality, and a solid safety rating — one that’s going to last and keep your family safe. When it comes to that, the Mazda CX 5 could be one of the best options for you in some cases.

How safe is the Mazda CX-5?

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 received a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from the NHTSA and the highest score of “Good” by the IIHS. Combine that with 4.79-Star Owner and 4.6/10 Expert Reviews from Vehicle History for a solid safety rating for this car.

These features make it clear the CX-5 is a safe vehicle, but that may not be enough information for you to make a buying decision. There’s more to consider, which we will do here, including the overall test results breakdown and other factors that play into safe driving.

Mazda CX-5 Crash Test Rating

One of the most important parts of safety ratings for any car is the crash test ratings. These organizations test these vehicles in a variety of crash methods, determining how well they perform in high-risk situations. It’s intense. Here are the results for the Mazda CX-5.

2020 Mazda CX-5 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Test Results

The IIHS gave the CX-5 a “Good” rating in all areas of crashworthiness, which includes factors related to passenger-side and driver-side overlap risks, roof strength, and head restraints. This is the highest rating possible from the organization in these areas.

A few deviations from the top rating are present such as the quality of the headlights in the optional offerings and the ease of use of the LATCH system for child seat anchors. In front crash prevention, it also downgraded safety to “Advanced” but not the highest rating of “Superior.”

2020 Mazda CX-5 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Test Results

The NHTSA gives the CX-5 for 2020 a 5-Star overall safety rating. That provides for solid performance in most areas, including the frontal crash risks (front driver side and front passenger side) as well as side crash risks, side barrier, and pole ratings. Each has a 5-Star Rating.

The only area that is somewhat different is in the rollover star rating. This rating was a 4-Star. The vehicle is tested in how it performs if it rolls over. While this vehicle did not tip in the dynamic tip testing, it did receive a rollover risk of 16.9%.

2020 Mazda CX-5 Available Safety Tech

When it comes to staying safe, sometimes technology can work in your favor. Many of today’s vehicles, including those from Mazda, have ample sensors and tech features that make driving a bit safer, especially in some of the worst risk situations. Here’s a look at some of those.

Advanced Smart City Brake Support with Pedestrian Detection: This feature alerts drivers and can apply the brakes automatically if there is a risk of a collision, including the risk of striking a pedestrian that is in the path of the vehicle.

Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go: For those who use cruise control, this is an excellent tool that can slow down and brake the car should driving conditions warrant it. It also can help to minimize the risk of accidents from distracted driving.

Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert: The Mazda CX-5 can also let you know when there’s a risk of someone coming into your path when backing up by sensing cars that are passing behind the vehicle. This also minimizes risks with blind spots when passing.

Lane Departure Warning System with Lane-Keep Assist: When operating the vehicle, if you start to move outside of the marked lanes without using your turn signal, the vehicle will warn you. It can even help steer you back into the lane if necessary.

Passive Safety Features: The Mazda CX-5 also has passive features that aim to keep passengers safe, such as ridge SKYACTIV, a type of body ring structure that helps to minimize damage in an accident. It also has an anti-instruction brake pedal and an advanced air bag system.

My red Mazda cx-5 seems like a dream car.
Mazda cx-5 has a high reliability rating and that has been true for me. My previous cx-5 needed no repairs in the three years I had it—only routine maintenance. I have found that with the newer one, my gas mileage has been higher than predicted, with a mix of highway and local driving. This car is very comfortable for a larger person to drive. I can use my iPhone for navigation and results are displayed on the car’s console where a navigation system would be. There is a dual temperature system with the driver and passenger each able to control the temperature on their side of the car. I like the locking feature which will automatically lock the doors when you get out of the car, although this can be turned off if that is not what you want. The cargo room is ample, made even more so when the back seats are folded down. My only minor complaint is that the cup holder seems to be in an awkward position.

Very happy with my 2020 cx-5.
I am incredibly pleased with my 2020 Mazda cx-5 touring. It has a smooth ride and helps me get around and through highway traffic with ease. Flipping on the “sport mode” switch is always fun. The seats are comfortable, with soft leather and a soft suede insert. It is a very luxurious looking vehicle (inside and out) for the price. I am satisfied with the quality of the microphone for phone calls (people say they can hear me better on this one than on my previous Mazda). I appreciate that it is loaded with useful safety features. I am disappointed that my touring (even with the added preferred equipment package) does not have apple CarPlay. I am also a little disappointed with the fuel tank capacity. I could always get about 350+ miles on my previous cx-7; on this cx-5, I get to below or barely 300 miles. But overall, I am very happy with this vehicle.

The Mazda cx-5 is a fabulous car!
The grand touring Mazda cx-5 is a great car. It is very comfortable with this particular model having the ability to save your seat setting which is super helpful especially if other people drive your car, never have to worry again about losing your perfect seat position! It is such a smooth drive, it does not shake or make a lot of noise and when your idling sometimes you forget the car is even on. This particular model also offers some great features like cooled and heated front seats for those scorching summer days or frigid winter ones. Overall I would 10/10 recommended this car, I have had a fabulous experience since getting it in may.

Great sport SUV with a luxury look and feel!
I find the car to be very comfortable and practical. It fits 5 comfortably. I love the sport like SUV style of the car and the sleek interior giving it a luxury feel. I find it drives very smooth and all of the features work well. I have not had any issues thus far it. I love the added safety features like brake assist and lane keep assist as well. All of that combined with the blind spot monitoring make me feel a lot safer on the roads!

Mazda cx-5 is my favorite SUV, hands down!
The cx-5 is very comfortable and smooth to drive. The gas mileage is not terrible for a car this size and has done well for me on long drives. The features like adaptive cruise control and lane monitoring are great. The technology features are user friendly. The apple CarPlay is great! I can display my navigation app of choice on the screen, easily have texts read to me and respond, and the call quality is great.

A luxury feel to a more affordable car.
I absolutely love my Mazda cx-5. It has amazing safety features that would make any driver comfortable on the road. Drives are smooth and quiet making road trips even more fun! Mine also has apple CarPlay which is incredible... I recommend to anyone getting the car! The seats are more comfortable than any other vehicle I have been in. The car rides so smooth and nice it honestly feels like driving a luxury car.

This car is great for someone looking for a cheap midsize SUV.
I like the speed and handling of the car. However, I do wish that the seats were heated and that electronic controls were among the standard trim package. In addition, while I like the safety features, I feel like the blind spot detection is too sensitive. In addition, you shouldn't have to read the whole manual to find out what a certain button means when it comes up on your dashboard.

Mazda cx-5 2020 feature highlights.
Great performance and reliability. Seats are comfortable and easily adjusted. Features include lane assist, blind spot monitoring, and backup camera. There is a sports mode that allows you to speed up quickly. There is also a hold feature that prevents your car from rolling forward when foot is not on gas pedal. I have found this useful in traffic and drive thrus.

The most important feature to me is the CX-5 is very safe.
The vehicle is roomy. It drives good. Has a good balance when your on the freeway. The air-condition is very strong for the heat in Texas. You can release the brake when you are stopped at a light you don't have to put it in park while waiting for food or at a light. The blind spot feature is awesome it lets you know at a high pitch and it blinks.

Great features & smooth, quiet drive.
I haven't experienced any problems with my Mazda cx-5 since I purchased it a few months ago. It is the perfect in-between size (not a huge SUV, and not a tiny car). It rides very smoothly, is quiet, and the interior looks high-end. I love the size of the screen and the technology. The rain sensing wipers, and lane detection features are awesome.

I will most likely stay with Mazda once this cars lease is up.
The car is beautiful. It drives very smoothly and has great gas mileage. I feel very safe and comfortable while driving this car. Some cool features that it has is an automated vibration system that alerts you if your going over the lanes, removing your hands from the steering wheel, or if anyone if hiding in your blind spots.

Amazing features I cannot live without.
I love the cooling seats in the car, an upgrade to only having heated prior. I cannot wait for winter to use the heated steering wheel feature. This is my second Mazda and I do not see myself switching anytime soon! The only feature I wish more trims had was the aerial camera to assist more with parking and reversing.

Best car I have ever leased.
I love my Mazda cx-5. It drives phenomenally. I love the new safety features added. The best car I have ever owned. A new safety feature that I love is the one that tells you you're getting too close to the car in front of you. The car beeps at you, vibrates, and does a great job in letting you know you're too close.

Couldn’t be happier with the cx-5.
Love it- great engine and awesome features. Very reliable and does well on gas mileage as well. Only issue is the trunk sometimes will not open if the car is already on and I'll have to turn off the engine. Overall very happy with the car and comparable features to the Audi q5 at significantly cheaper price.
accountCircle Becca M on April 27, 2021
I am in love with my Mazda cx-5.
It has seriously been perfect. I am just shy of 5000 miles and still love it to death. I do wish the cup holders were in a better spot and the screen was touch screen but those are both minimal inconveniences. Car runs fantastic. Smooth and quiet ride. Safety features very high rated. Gas mileage is alright.
accountCircle Ernie S on May 23, 2021
I give a high recommendation for the Mazda cx-5.
No problems. Good visibility from driver’s seat, excellent safety features, very good rear passenger space, very good cargo space. Excellent gas mileage. The leather interior is of high quality. I especially like the back up camera and blind spot detectors. Climate control system cools cabin spaces evenly.

Great small SUV with irreplaceable safety features and comfort.
My Mazda cx-5 is the best! It is the perfect size for a first time mom. It also has the turbo engine, decreasing the lag time and responsiveness. It has every safety feature possible, including lane keep assist, automatic braking, cruise control following assist, blind spot monitoring, and more.
accountCircle Nicole S on July 16, 2021
Luxurious without breaking the bank. Safe and reliable. In love with my car!
Reliable in safety. Technology is unmatched. Love how comfortable it is as well as the sporty and elegant features. Car is quiet and efficient. Relatively low price point for a luxury-feeling vehicle. Gas mileage is good at 28 mpg. The size is just perfect for road trips without being too big.
accountCircle Lynn P on April 21, 2021
Really love how the car drives.
I love how the car drives! I just really do not like the tires. They do not last long. It has all of the safety features that anyone could ever need. I love that it has apple CarPlay. You can use the GPS on your iPhone as opposed to spending more money and purchasing the Mazda GPS system.
accountCircle Michael D on August 17, 2021
Mazda cx 5... A good value for your money.
Great car with many features including safety and performance. Good gas mileage on the highway and average in the city. The interior is nice but needs more storage place. The navigation can be confusing at times. The sound system is good but it could use some adjustments on the volume.
accountCircle Jenna N on April 8, 2021
More features than you could ever hope for.
The features on this vehicle are unparalleled. The ease of comfort when driving and the excessive safety features make it a wonderful experience. Features such as automatic high beams is not a feature I ever consider but one I would surely miss if forced to give up my cx-5.
accountCircle Elizabeth T on May 25, 2021
Comparable to a much higher priced ‘luxury’ model.
I love my Mazda cx-5! It has high end features like leather seats, sunroof, power windows, power seats, heated seats, XM radio, Bose speakers, Bluetooth, 7” touchscreen with apple play, 19” aluminum alloy tires and impressive safety features -all standard equipment!
accountCircle Dave B on August 24, 2021
Just the facts about my Mazda cx-5.
Great car for the value. Good features, comfy seats, easy to use technology. Gets good gas mileage. Not a huge trunk but enough for me. A/c is not that great however. Rides nice and smooth, very reliable. Would definitely recommend it for the price under $30,000.
accountCircle Sarah M on March 16, 2021
Best car I have ever owned.
This vehicle is the best I have ever owned. The features make it so easy and smooth to drive. My favorite feature is the lane change signal that notifies you when there is a car next to you. The mpg is also great which is a nice surprise for a bigger vehicle.
accountCircle Brooke M on July 9, 2021
Perfect family SUV for someone who still wants the sporty look and features.
This vehicle has been amazing so far. Provides plenty of space for the family while still having a sporty look and features to it. Also has additional features that make it very easy to drive and especially nice for long trips. Would highly recommend it.
