Your Mazda key fob works like magic, making life easier on busy days. But what if it suddenly becomes less responsive and eventually loses power? There’s no need to rush to a Mazda service center right off the bat. There’s a good chance the key fob just needs a simple battery change.

What kind of battery does a Mazda key fob need?

Most Mazda vehicles, including ones with the Advanced Keyless Entry system, use a key fob powered by a CR2025 battery. Also known as a “coin battery” because of its round shape and silver tone, the CR2025 is a 3-volt lithium battery. It’s the same battery that powers common small electronics such as digital watches, hearing aids and fitness devices.

Where To Find the Right Key Battery and How Much it Costs

Any retail outlet or e-commerce platform that sells batteries offers the CR2025. Prices from major battery manufacturers typically range from $4 to $6 for a four-pack of key fob batteries. Discounts apply when buying in larger packs of 8, 10 or 15 batteries. You can also save on the purchase price by purchasing store-brand CR2025 lithium batteries or ones from lesser-known manufacturers.

Steps for Replacing a Key Fob Battery

Fortunately, it’s easy and quick to replace your failing Mazda key fob battery when the need arises. You’ll need just the new replacement CR2025 battery, the key fob and a small flathead screwdriver. To prevent scratching, you can wrap the screwdriver tip in cellophane tape.

  • Step 1: Press the small knob on the key fob to reach the inside auxiliary key that starts your Mazda vehicle. Remove the key and put it aside while doing the battery replacement.
  • Step 2: Twist a flat screwdriver into the outer gap, sliding it gently but firmly along the opening. This allows you to remove the cover of the key fob battery.
  • Step 3: Remove the battery cap and pop out the existing nonfunctional CR2025 battery. Check the rubber ring to make sure it’s still attached to the cap and is free from damage.
  • Step 4: Now it’s time to pop your brand-new CR2025 lithium battery into place. Make sure the positive pole is facing up toward you, and then re-cover the battery cap.

You’re done! Just slide the auxiliary key back into its cubbyhole, test the fob, and hit the road once again in your beloved Mazda.
